For the cockpit I am building, I already have a surround sound system but I want to add another sub right under my chair or behind it. Is it possible to use a car sub in a home theatre system?

It is, a speaker is a speaker.
It does need a box, and most probably an amplifier; also a way to split the existing sub signal so it can be sent to the new sub.

The only thing to work out with running a car sub would be putting power to it. A lot of home audio amplifiers are designed for 8 ohm speakers, so if using a sub that is less than that resistance, an appropriate amplifier must be chosen.

A car audio amplifier could also be used with a DC power supply. I used to have four 15" subs hooked up through car amps in my home and it was loud as hell and easy to hook up with power supplies and some old car amps that I had laying around.

Doctors are usually giving advice, hee hee...

If you already have a sub Id say do consider buying a tactile unit to run under your seat. Run this with your current sub and speakers from the LFE.

I can recommend the following with prices from $49
Buttkicker Mini LFE
Clarke TST 209
Aura Pro

Try "Parts Express"
They do subs as well and loads of other stuff.

4ohm amps are harder to come by but while I cannot take responsibility if any fault occurs Ive ran multiple 4ohm tactile on a budget Sony AV amp at home. Used this for testing and it is suitable for 6-8ohms speakers yet had no problems of overheating or cutting out.
