I was trying to be sarcastic about the ozone layer, guys. I couldn't care less! I just enjoy chillin out by the pool and trying to balance the farmer's tan with a proper tan.

But usually the farmer's tan wins out.

People are to protective, just live life. Like I said during the summer I'm outside for 10 hours a day.

If you plan on spending long times exposed to the sun then you should protect yourself, you're daft if you don't. Especially if there is a history of skin cancer in the family.

20 - 30 years ago dad said you could spend all day in the sun and barely get burnt, now you spend 15 - 20mins in the sun and your burnt.

Big difference. i dont know what the sun is like in other places but here in Australia Queensland its very nasty. You just cant spend any more than 20 - 30mins in the sun without sunblock, if you do you WILL be burnt.

I wear a bandanna so the top of my head doesn't burn, other then that my skin will just turn brown and not burn.

Probably doesn't help that there is a whopping great big Ozone 'hole' over the Antarctic.

A couple off years ago I asked an African if could get burned if he stays in the sun too long. He said "YES" and he also said that it hurts eventhough you can't see he's burned.

Why wouldn't a person from African be able to burn? Their skin is virtually the same as everyone elses aside for the colour.

Whatever, it's still just a chance that I could get it. There is no way in hell I am digging holes wears a long sleeve shirt and a big hat, it's just way to hot out there. I'll take my chances.

Also I would like to know where this statistic came from since it isn't cited:

SAWNET
...is probably the reason that dark skinned people have a tenth of the skin cancer rate of fairer folks.

I clicked on this site and came up with nothing:
http://www.pueblo.gsa.gov/cic_text/health/sun_uv/sun-uv-you.htm

I might be missing something though, but this contradicts a lot of what has been told to people over the years. I'm not doubting it I would just like to see where it came from.

I try to stay as white as possible, but it's kinda hard when you live in Florida :grumpy:

My aunt and cousin are the ones who like to get a lot of sun, and as a result their backs are literally covered with thousands of freckles.

why would you do that if i can ask? your bones need the sun... VITAMINS!!! :D

anyhow, back to topic, i'm not really the tanning kinda person, but my girl friend thinks that i tan would suit me so well ya... guilty... went tanning the past 2 days. but thing is ... over here you get even now in Feb a burn very very easily :nervous:

I just don't like being tan, and getting a tan would require me to go outside or to the beach, both places where I hate being. The beach is boring, and just ends up making me feel sandy and uncomfortable. Being Florida, it is hot all the time, so I like to spend my time inside where I can be nice and cool.

I'm not anti-tan, but why mention the other two. Yes I am not too fond of gay people, nor do I like hippies, but what does that have to do with this conversation. I am entitled to my opinion.

I just like how the guy from where the white people are really white is making the biggest deal out of skin cancer and burning.

Maybe the UK government teaches them that sunlight is evil? :dopey:
The whiter you are, the easier you burn and/or get skin cancer.

During summer time, it's better to stay in the shade. You tan easier and you won't burn. Sun light is necessary but don't overdo it. *Trop* is too much, like they say.

hmm well you are right at some point. Over here its freakin hot during the whole year, especially in summer where we have around 55 degree celcius!

Anyhow guys, gonna go outside to the pool, do my studies and ... TAN :sly:

I'm not Scottish, they can't even turn the lights on in their house.
