Sunrise at the nordschleife

Happened across this gem of a moment by accident. I was online with a pair of GTP member, one asked if I had done "the ring" in the dark. I set the time to 23:30, time scale to 5 jumped in my F430 and off I went. I think I had the slowest car, so they fell in behind and we just sailed around the track for a few laps. Then one of them said, is it starting to get light? It took almost two laps for it to become light, our tires were shot, but we stayed out to watch the sun come up. A magical moment.

So you done the ring in the dark. Oh err lol.

Sorry British toilet humour at it's worst.

Try Nordschleife with daytime change and weather change online. You will be surprised, when parts of the track completely dissapear and you are cruising through the sky.

Yes GT is just a game, movies are just movies and books are just books. That doesn't mean different mediums are incapable of evoking emotion within. These aren't sob stories, just a means of looking past the physical boundaries of just a game, and notice the things you normally wouldn't on a day to day.

Should've explained it in a different way; I meant that I do not experience a game to the same extent as you do. In my case, a game rarely evokes emotions that are very strong, though admittedly Gran Turismo is a top runner on the list that is close to actually doing so.

Honestly, the knot-heads need to go infest another forum. They do get tiresome.

Very funny.

I sincerely hope you someday find true enjoyment from your games. When a game transcends the normal boundaries it's something special. A few times in various games I've had experiences that made me feel as if I'm in a trance, like nothing in the world exists but me and the experience I'm having. It might sound corny but it feels like a "religious experience".

PSZeTa, open your mind and eventually, hopefully, you'll experience these moments as well.

I'm glad that you enjoy Gran Turismo and other games to the fullest. I wouldn't say that I don't find true enjoyment from my games; in fact, I do. The experience itself is certainly different though. 👍

And why didn't PD give us the ability to do all of this OFFLINE in practice/arcade mode ?

It's all in the game (settings for time-acceleration / weather) but just for online racing.

Urgh, based on Ops description it sounded like he had time progression set on very high, like 30x that of real life. Even with messed up settings your satisified? lol

You have to set it to 1 for the real, tear inducing effect and do multiple laps on the track until it suddenly hits your hey its pretty much daytime, just like real life. The accelerated effect is just for showing of eye candy, not a true to life experience.

I had it on 10 or 15, but yes I agree, when I have more time I will most definitely do this. With a one year old in house, it's not as easy anymore.

P.S. Really looking forward to the no HUD option finally.

You guys need to get laid.

HAHAHAHAHAHA, I'll have to second that.

With that said though, I have to say it is a very cool feeling when the sun comes up on the 'ring. It's really well done, and I smelled the morning mist too when I first experienced it.

Cool thread, thanks for bringing it up. 👍

Great post. There's nothing like being harmonious with mind, body, and machine. It's a high! Especially on the most demanding track in the game. Have yet to see the sunrise, but will make a point to try it out. It's not often you can have "feelings" in a game. But this is as real as it could get. For those putting down the scenery, there's a YouTube video of a guy in his m3, split screen, between real life and gt5. Looks absolutely amazing in my eyes!

Well, I got lots to comment, but small time to do, so... I really believe in the words and feelings you guys written there... That's like I feel when I'm driving @ the ring... and 1 week ago I just had my first online cruise @ the ring with friends when it was night... I was completelly surprised of how dark it is... and that's real, its in the middle of a forest, it's supposed to be dark and scary as hell... even more @ 200kmh :P

It was so incredible, the feeling, that I was expecting a fox or something cross the road from some of the roadside forest...

And the morning its simply stunning... the lightning of the Nordschleife its better than the one in the rest of the game... looks like that...

This is why I wish they would add more "scenic" tracks like this. Make's for a very relaxing and casual drive. Would love to see Hawaii in the future.

Funny, I just discovered this *magic* experience over the weekend.

I tested it out last week, and then set it up for a couple of my buddies to see (@ Lemans.) Everyone was awestruck, the race practically quit. I ramped up the time progression to 40. For those of you going to test this out, keep the progression low and you'll be more impressed. If you set it too high, sunrise and sunset happen too fast to enjoy it. I think the progression is a positive factoring from 0-60. 0 means one second equals one second (which you will see in A Spec by the way when you run the endurance races at either Lemans or Nurburgring) 60 means one second equals 60 seconds or a minute. With the factor set to 60, a 24-minute race (roughly 3.5 laps @ 7:00 per lap) will take you all the way around the clock, sunrise and sunset. As I mentioned however, with a high progression factor, sunrises and sunsets blow by too fast.

Big time, that was the other aspect that gave me goosebumps the first time I drove the Ring at night. It just puts you on another level. For example, a good friend of mine came by 2 nights ago, he's a huge FM fan and gets pissed at me when any new GT comes out and I bail FM for it, but I told him, sit down and complete a lap of the Ring at 3 AM. If you could only see the look on his face and how hard he was tensing! He even said, "Holy ---- that was scary as hell!" LOL. He couldn't finish the lap by the way, the car was destroyed!

I was disappointed when I first saw the Toscana demo and when i experienced it first hand on the Monza track at how quickly it got dark, I think i was playing arcade and I don't know if you can change the time passing speed in arcade.

I have just experienced the sunset on the ring and it was spectacular, but again it was far too fast and i wanted to savour the moment longer.

I agree that with everyone else that it was one of those spectacular moments in a game that you just don't forget, however, I wish it was stumbled across accidentally after 3-4 laps and thinking, 'isn't it darker than when i first started?' That would have pushed me on another 5 laps and more to see the full transition.

GT5 is an amazing game, but i feel as if PD let the cat out the back before it was released where in previous GT titles there was a bit more exploration in finding that new track or certain car etc etc. We knew everything about the game before we had a chance to play it and yet we expected more. We expected something to be held back for us to discover on our own (e.g. infamous level 40 damage magazines are still publishing details on (Edge december issue)), but i don't think it's going to happen the way we're expecting it (infamous image of yellow car with crumpled bonnet).

These updates that are releasing on a monthly basis are something to keep us going, hoping for the improvements we know this game deserves. I wish Kaz all the best in these endevours, and I hope the game continues to turn heads for the right reasons well in to 2011

I have to agree. I had a couple of moments where I was just stunned. All of them at the Ring.

1) 24 Hour course with CLK-GTR in rain at night. 10 minute laps have never been so sweet. Pitch black with all the people camping along the track. Simply speechless, driving along tip-toeing along.

2) Online race in my LSB M3. One of those moments at sunset just shocked me so much I lost the car coming out of the Foxhole. From outside view, all you can see of the car is the interface for the driver. So amazing, the details on the 'ring.

Where is this menu. I have been looking for it but cant find it.

I believe it is in Course settings when you are in pre race menu online. You can set Time, Time Transition, Laps, Damage, etc. Its one of the 4 blue buttons on the lower right hand side of the screen in pre race menu.
