Since burning out early on this game -- 53 hours accoring to the Daily Log, something like 40 of that in the first couple weeks -- I have now returned to it after leaving it alone for a while. It seems even better than I remembered? I finished training the second of the three amiibos we got, trying out some lesser-used characters, and I was struck by how finely tuned those characters are compared to previous games, whenever I would try to break out of my comfort zone with Samus. I was actually spurred to fire up the game and play with Link after watching Danny and Arin play Zelda II on GameGrumps, and Link feels way better than before.
I think the impact of the amiibos on gameplay was (predictably) exaggerated, but there's still an element of "personality" and they're useful to have if you don't have any friends who live nearby, like me. I'm not sure how different a L50 amiibo is compared to a L9 AI, but when I teamed up with the amiibos to go 3v3 with L9 AIs, we kicked their ass and then some.
I will say though, I think for once I agree with the competitive Smash players on something: this iteration has too many annoying stages if you don't take advantage of the Ω stage feature. And somehow at the same time, many of the stages are kind of bland. I guess I prefer varied topography over "boss" encounters.
