Suzuka's sandy plains

I was doing the Civic Seasonal around Suzuka today. It wasn't a particularly fast race, so I looked around at the scenery more than usual. Then I noticed the first corner run-off area has a section of tarmac before the sand, which wasn't what I expected at all.

I put Prologue back in my machine and found that the sand/grass went all the way from fence to track, like I expected it to.

Was there a change made to the real Suzuka between GT5P and GT5, and this was reflected in each game? Was GT5's Suzuka always like this? Was it tweaked with an update? Do I race with my eyes shut?

I searched the forums before posting this and couldn't find anything; just a Google search and the first thing that came up was a 2009 thread from this site. Total search fail by me.

But on the other hand... awesome, the sand is now sorted in my head.

Sand/Gravel is now being gradually replaced by tarmac at most circuits. Tarmac reduces rollover in accidents, increases the likelihood of cars returning to the race and decreases the length of yellow flag periods.

Tarmac also slows down a sliding car more quickly - it is after all the substance that tyres are built for gripping to!

Its part of the Tilike redesigns to make it safer. Luckily Suzuka has not been butchered as much as Spa in this respect.

There's an idea for some DLC for GT5 / content for GT6: historical development of certain racetracks. Every layout that ever existed, available to play.

Or, to really screw with your head, a special mode where each time you start a lap, the track rearranges to the next layout. Drive the developments.

That's probably a silly idea; I've been studying all day and my brain has gone.

I'd love to race the original Monza configuration with the banking.
+1

I even tried to get onto the banking in GT5, because if you look backwards while going down Monza's main straight, there's no wall keeping you from entering the banking.

Of course this doesn't work, but it's kind of fun to go check it out and fantasize.

In some of the replays, too, right before the first chicane, you can see the old banking begin to separate and veer away from the straight.

Would anybody like to see Südschleife? :dopey:👍

FIA actually - contact with tarmac slows cars down much more quickly than gravel and reduces the rollover risk.
