Can you make it stop sensoring words like ****load, ****ty etc? That it only bans the word when it's written alone?

Basically he wants to use swear words when they are combined.

Which means he just wants an excuse to be a douchebag in other areas because apparently he can't convey his point correctly without swearing.

Funny

Why should we censor a word, but allow it to be written if you add a wee bit on to it? It's a profanity either way.

And your attempt at circumventing the swear filter has been removed.

If you can't type it without putting an expletive into it, don't submit it here.

It's stunning to think that this message isn't getting through, or that either of the words given as an example could be acceptable.

swear filters are sort of silly I think. I mean I can understand them for the few words that are very socially unacceptable, like the n-word. 'Minors' these days are surrounded by violence, sexual imagery, and bad language in real life, tv, video games, and the internet and I think it's kind of silly to try and protect them in this astronomically small slice of the internet.

And you aren't even really protecting them, "you ****ing ***got" can be deciphered in about 3 seconds by just about anybody; so the message still gets through. I understand that they want to keep this forum clean and not have it filled with idiots shouting curse words at each other, but the only real solution to that would be to not allow the message to be posted until all the words were filter-approved. That is to say if a word was censored, you couldn't post the message until you changed it. And then if they by-pass the filter by typing "l i k e t h i s" or "lik3 t4is" they get an infraction/ban or something.

but it all comes down to this is somebody's website, that they pay for, and they can do whatever they want.

Jordan has said this many times: the swear filter is not in place to “protect” anybody, let alone children. It’s to raise the level of conversation at GTP – if you allowed a bunch of 13–19 year-olds to swear, the general tone of the entire forum would go down the proverbial toilet in a New York second. It’s not the ideal solution – there are many people who obviously can handle talking like adults while occasionally using profanity – but it’s a very effective way of managing a forum of this size.

The only one that annoys me is "Cockpit".

EDIT: Holy cow, it got fixed. Could swear it was like "****pit" before.

Shiitake, don't be so canal abou tit.

We prefer to save the cursing for those one-of-a-kind or once-in-a-lifetime events, not a cool internet hyperlink or a lowered automobile.

For the most part, we prefer civil behavior to trash-talk all day long. There's also so many more colorful ways to describe things.

You dirty little perv... Cockpit, that's a good one :O

Sage, I hear you, but words like those I wrote in the first post (now censored) are more or less daily words. Wouldn't exactly make the general tone go down the drain.

Besides, I guess some look at the swear filter as a 'legal' way to swear, even though it looks like ****. See, I didn't curse. Point made. Point taken? ;)

Didn't we have a option to select a level of the filter in the Control Panel?

-> This is a huge problem, especially when we type Japanese-related words in Romanji. We try to express that on the General Anime forum w/ Nk4e; and on the Vehicle Wish List V5.5. For example, like that certain Japanese-named mushroom, an anime character in a certain series, an anime/JDM TV series, or even a certain car on my wish list.

-> It can really be bothersome on some people who is trying to provide information that is not relating to giving profanity on that person.

If we got rid of the swear filter, every thread would probably look like the comments on YouTube.

I don't think it would degrade that much. But I can easily see a flood of pointless profanity from the youth, in some poor attempt to look "badass."

There is a valid point on foreign works and how they impact some attempts to convey info.

But basically, I view usage of profanity in daily talk poorly. Mostly because it gets used because the person cannot find a better word... which usually indicates a lack of thought before speaking or, a bit harsher, intelligence and education.

About half the people my age are not suitable for continuation of their genetic code, so I can imagine they'd do something as retarded as flood threads with unnecesary swearing. I only swear in cases including intense pain, and even then I limit usage to merely yelling "Oh ass." In normal speak, I'll glady use crap and damn, even in front of my mom, who will use corporal punishment. So words like **** and s*** are perfectly fine to keep under the veil of *s.

+1 👍

Yeah, I can see the problem with the swear filter at times. The swear filters do always caught me off guard and when I want to swear by misspelling the word, (even if its intentional) I get an infraction. :ouch: Sometime it is unfair to get a infraction like this, while other "poor" posters get away with it...... :nervous:

Well seeing as you've been here a while, and aren't a poor poster, you are expected to make a good example. ;)

I do have my "off days" and I can't really help that. Well I guess that happens when your autistic..... :(

Thats true, everyone has their off days. I figure if you have a good enough reason to be mad, then you should be able to let off some steam. But if someone is constantly posting profanity just for the sake of it, or for bashing other members, then they've crossed the line.

On this site, when you get an infraction, you deserve it. Got one from Famine a few months back, but I was actually expecting to, because it was a pretty infractable post, and I did feel bad about it after I posted it. He's absolutely right... the only time you'll ever need to abuse the language filter is in a full-out flame-war (which they discourage here) and even then, you don't need to. I've successfully fought flame-wars without using a single profanity, both here and elsewhere.

In any other case... If you can't describe an extraordinarily, shtonking fast car as anything but "******* fast", then you need to brush up on your language skills.

Thank the stars that you only have a single-language swear filter. There are some websites where utterly inane words can get censored for containing short strings that actually mean something in some obscure language. I mean, I can't get over how "leche" (milk, Spanish) has come to be considered a swear word in our country... or how Lacrosse can mean anything but that funny sport with the sticks and the ball.

As Sage explained, profanity filtering has nothing to do with 'protection' and everything to do with quality of conversation. I find curse-laden internet discussions difficult and depressing to read, as people generally misuse swearing when they cannot be bothered to properly articulate their feelings or do not feel confident in their opinions. I hold GTPlanet users to a higher standard have been very happy with the results over the last 7 years.

Didn't we have a option to select a level of the filter in the Control Panel?
That has never been an option.

This is a valid, albeit limited, concern. I have updated the swear filter entries which should prevent false positives like that in the future. For a quick example, 'mi****' and '****akes' are no longer filtered. This change is not applied retroactively, and will only apply to new or edited posts.

Testing.. ********.

Interesting. Now it filtered the whole word. I use sheetload to describe something that's more than a whole lot. Not any profanity using that word, is it? Or am I just too Norwegian (not a cursing word here at all).

Good thing mi**** actually has been removed :)

It's still swearing. Next you're going to be telling me that mother****er is actually a nice word because it's got family connotations.

You’ve already been told twice in this thread that compound words with profanity are no better than just the profane words on their own. Why are you still asking about it?

I see no problem with the word filter. I have been on other forums that had no such feature. And to be honest, when every other word was F-this or F-that it kind of makes it hard to take anyone seriously. The level of intelligent conversation goes down and less people are willing to participate or even sign up at that point.

Sure, some words will be mixed in because of spelling, but problems like that will be ironed out over time.

And if you need to "swear" about something why don't you go that extra mile and throw this little baby in --> 🤬

It gets the point across. (At least it does for me.)

I did that a lot of times and apparently everyone tells me to stop using it. :grumpy: Ever since then I stop using the 🤬 and used the * (but to be honest I actually started to swear less on GTP, but I swear like a machine gun on MSN and Facebook now. :indiff:)

Well, you did it to such an excess that your posts were a pain to read :p And just seemed... unintelligent...

-> Thank you Jordan for addressing the issue. I can rest now. :)👍
