My old PC, which runs on Win2k fell into a problem. I started it up like usual, a message came up saying to do Disk Checking, so I did that, and it took an awfully long time. Right after, it decided to restart randomly, and then it showed up with the following:"

Starting Windows. . .

Windows 2000 could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEMced startup options for Windows 2000, press F8.

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows 2000
Setup using the original Setup floppy disk or CD-ROM.
Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.

"

Usually the Starting Windows would show up, and the bars would will and it will start. I've already searched on the web everywhere, and tried most things out but I can't. The PC won't read the bootup disk or CD-ROM at all. I've heard of this problem only being on Win2k aswell. I've got some files which I need back which are pretty important to me too, so formatting the HDD is the last option. I can't get into the BIOS either. Can anyone help?

As a last resort, if you can boot to a Linux LiveCD you can retrieve those files. Or put that drive in the machine you're using now, if possible.

It's all good, I don't need to retrieve the files since I had taken a copy of them into a Flash drive about a week before. Lucky that, I'm getting the HDD formatted tomorrow. Thanks for the help.
