Hello GT planet !

I'm sure all of you have been faced with the 5 second penalty in the GT4 but have you ever been penalised for being hit by another car ? At first I thought it was a one off until it occurred every single time.

Section : Special Condition
Race : Swiss Alps - Normal (Reverse)
Car : TOYOTA RSC Rally Raid Car '02
A-spec points : 1

Full acceleration at the start (I have a powerful car than the AI) but then all of a sudden the AI car comes in from the right hand side and hits me - boom - 5 second penalty.

Is it meant to work like that ? If it does, then it is certainly weird.

yeppp, happened to me too. that 5 secs penalty is bull. the worst for me was at Grand Canyon. I had enough problems winning in hard mode, having to deal with that 5 secs penalty was the worst. 👎 :grumpy: 👎 :grumpy:

That's what really annoys me too, the AI car driving into you and getting a penalty. Annoying... :grumpy:

Welcome to you as well Darth Vader! :)

Yeah totally agree, I hate it when u pass an AI car with plenty of room on a straight then just as you pass the AI car slowly pulls across seemly to be blind and just pushes the back end of your car is if u aint there! Never mind

Best thing to do is to keep sure your in the lead by some meters away from his car so you know he isnt going to hit you.. this is what i do because i HATE those AI cars bumping into you especialy into the wall :ouch:

but the reward at the end is with it and so is the cash prize...

I have even had it happen that the AI car behind me rearends me repeatedly, spins me around and hits me again head on, and I am the one getting the five second penalty... It is also silly in the sense that you can ride certain walls if you do it right and corner well above normal speeds, but then get a penalty if you hit a bump just wrong and lightly brush the wall with a front fender.

I think the 5 second penalty is a good idea, just implemented in the worst possible fashion. They should have put it on normal races on wider, more open tracks, where there is room to manouver. But only including it on tight, narrow rally races is just plain stupid. Contact in that sort of situation is almost inevitable, especially given the stupidity of the AI. I've lost quite a few rally races because of AI contact (sometimes it's because I nudged just enough to warrant a penalty since it was too difficult or just impossible to squeeze by, and other times the AI has just blatantly rammed into me).

The only more annoying thing in GT4 has to be the stupid waits in the 1 lap magic races in mission hall. There are some really shoddy design flaws with GT4.

The opposing car has complete freedom on the track, but you're the one that has to make sure not to bump into it or allow it to bump into you. One thing I did find though was the five second penalty only applies if it hits you on the front bumper. If it hits your quarter panels, doors, or rear bumper, you're okay.

They seem to have ot programmed to asses the penalty if the front of the car hits something and not if something hits the front of the car. The area seems to extend all the way to the doors which is the horrible part. If they made it just the front or front corners of the car then it would be easier to handle. But when the AI takes a complete turn into the side of the car because they didnt think to add collision avoidance for the human controlled car it is a double whammy. Honestly thats why the car drove into the side of you because the AI does not see the Human car, they see other AI cars but not the players car.

It is very annoying how this penalty works. I spent a good few days just doing the Grand Canyon (hard) in the special conditions section just because of this penalty lark. I did manage to get it to work in my favour in the end since the first two 1st gear turns near the start I decided to ram the AI car. Penalty but you don't need to go more than 31 mph round those bit and it was the only place that allowed me to overtake the AI car.

Did PD intend for the penalties to work this way, or has this "no-car-damage" replacement just been poorly implemented? I'd love to hear what they have to say about this. It is the one major downside to this entire game. But it is a great game nontheless.

I'm new here so I hope my opinions do not cause offence.

One thing thats a cool touch when whacking the walls is the blurred screen, very effective and knocking u off balance for the right line for the next bend

Does not seem like it. Apparently they can push you out of the way as much as they want... and you get the penalty if they push you into the wall.

Do the AI drivers get a 5 second penalty as well for bumping into you ?

I don't think so, however, I don't really notice the AI cars when I'm driving. But, there was once where the AI driver did hit me with his front and he just sped off, leaving me behind with a 5 second penalty.

I think the person who said if you hit something with the front of the car, you get the 5 second penalty which the area extends to the door areas, was correct. I've slid across the race track and hit things with the back of my car or somewhere close to it and didn't get a 5 second penalty. Try using this to your advantage.

I found that the penalty was a real bother until it became clear that if you setup your car correctly (max traction control, 41-44% bias, etc.) so that it understeers like a donkey but avoids the whipping from too much rear wheelspin, you can easily go through all of the dirt and snow tracks without much challenge by avoiding the AI car, and, also making sure that you keep the rear of your car always pointed towards the oncoming corner or edge of the track.

This is almost sounding like a cheat but the 5 second penalty is often a reverse-cheat meaning that it penalizes unfairly so the compensation is to put the rear end of your car against the corners and edges to avoid it.

You can actually go full speed on a straight section, blip the brakes while turning the wheels to get your car rotating in the correct direction for the oncoming curve/turn, bump the berm with the rear or rear corner of the car and bounce out like a bat out of hell. I could not figure out the reverse Grand Canyon any other way because the AI car cheats and bumps too much.

Happens to me ALL the time. The system doesn't care who hit who, the guy on the back takes the blame. Of course, the AI takes nothing for hitting you. Why? It doesn't have a brain and you do.

Maybe PD wants you to learn how to anticipate a car coming up on you too fast and you have to get out of the way :p

Althought there is absolutely no possible credible reason I can think of for getting a penalty for the car smashing you in the very start...haha

You get the joy of crusing around at a limited speed.

Did you guys know if you slam your back end of your car into the wall you don't get a 5 sec delay. I just mash on the gas and drift my way to the finish line I can win most races by 20 seconds or so with this method.

It works rather well on Ice Arena, once you've built up enough of a lead to take that racing line heading into the corner.

At rallying this helps me most. You step on the gas, the rear end hits the wall, silde along the wall and over the finish line.
