In my pal version (i don't know if they fixed it, but if so than that's cool) I don't get 5 sec penalty when the AI car hits me from the back. I almost never lose any of the rallies too, so i really do not care, but i *Think* when the AI hits me he gets a 5 sec penalty because then i can speed from him like he was in reverse. I have to check it on a replay.
 
5 sec penalty comes for every touch of the opponent car, if he's in front. if he's behinf you, there is no penalty,so just make sure you don't touch him, if you're second. It is very badly done from PD. It's nice to have penalty, so you don't fight your way up, but still, when he hits you he doesn't get it ...
 
The penalty thing didn't bother me cuz it only really happens when you crash into a wall. Not to mention, most of the time is spent just doing laps and tuning car settings.

I'm more tweaked about the unit conversion system with the options.

Like how if you have it set to HorsePower, it shows PS value in the car menu despite saying HP, but when you view a specific car you see a different value, which is the true amount of horsepower.

And how the PS value in the garage, the replay menu, and the replay title when you start viewing it are all different.

Now tell me, what's with that?

It is rather odd seeing 4 different values for the cars' power - even went set to BHP...

as for the 5secs penalty, I can see it has its uses, but a) Why should I suffer if the CPU rams me? b) Ooops I've made a mistake, and hit a wall (soo easy to do on Citta D'Aria) - why the heck must I be punished further for my mistake? I hit a wall, I can't see a thing due to the screen, lost plenty of speed and revs - is that not enough?? In real life, drivers don't get penalised if they hit something. They normally end up with a bent car. :crazy: i wish they would stop this pseudo-realistic crap they have filled GT4 with.
 
I had read in a post "I took my 5 sec penalty", but had no idea until I got into the rally section and had it happen to me. I believe they're trying to make us drive better and if you're in a close race, you almost have to. It's just plain wrong though to be in the lead, brake and turn properly, only to have the other car come sliding in and hit you, costing you a race through no fault of your own. Good idea that just went a little too far.
 
the worst one for me was at citta di aria II. i was near the end of the lap and i slightly miscalculated the first corner having to slow down just as i got thru the ai car smashes into me at about 120mph which sends me flying down the hill out of control only to end up parked into a building with a 5 sec penalty! gah! :(
 
i think pd was trying to make it more diffucelt
 
That penalty can be weird and annoying, but it was worse in Prologue, as it was 10 second penalty

... I did manage to get it to work in my favour in the end since the first two 1st gear turns near the start I decided to ram the AI car. Penalty but you don't need to go more than 31 mph round those bit and it was the only place that allowed me to overtake the AI car ...

And what's more, when you do that you can't accelerate but you CAN block the AI car. Dive bomb it, take the 5 sec, but pin the AI driver to a barrier and drive away at the end of the penalty.

Hey, I'd never do it on a real racetrack, but on a real racetrack there are no 5 second penalties so it's a wash :sly:
 
I think the 5 second penalty for crashing into walls is a great idea - On GT3 you could just get in the Escudo and ride the walls and beat all the rallys no problem.

On the other hand, the penalty for bashing into the other car is complete BS, considering the other car can be difficult to overtake when to road is narrow and the fact that he can happily ram you without getting a penalty. 'Tis rather annoying.
 
yea im with everyone on this one. the 5 sec penalty sucks
been rammed by the AI so many times, hence suffering the penalty
not fair!
just plain stupid i reckon

i think they wanted to make rallying harder than gt3. b/c in gt3 you could put dirt tyres on just about anything and then fling it around the walls winning by miles
the 5 sec penalty is to prevent that
 
I agree very annoy, but then I get my pay back and by using them as brakes at high speeds that send them into the grass :D
 
Putting 5 seconds penalty in GT4 was one of the MOST STUPID THING that you did KY.
 
I like the 5 second penalty. It's a good add because it teaches you how to stay on the road or else. I do hate when a car is behind or on your rear side and you are the one who get's the penalty. I also think it's good because it take away from guys who I heard on this Fourm saying they want damage dynamics. There's your damage. What's the damage? If you hit the walls too much, you will loose expecially in "Special Condition - hard". I don't like loosing so I stay "off the wall" like Michael Jackson -lol
 
I though the 5-second would be a good idea to present another challenge but the downfalls from AI cars hitting you and causing the penalty really ruin the system for me.

Yeah the poor AI really ruins the system. I even saw an AI car fishtail me so I could hit him and get a damn penalty. I was so pissed I wanted to throw my PS2 out the window. A respectable AI is the #1 priority in GT5 for me, over damage. BTW, the rally events in hard mode made me sweat as hell.

Nope, and sometimes you get it for barely tapping the wall.
 
The 5 second penalty is a load of crap. I thought this game was supposed to be the ultimate racing sim or something like that. I watched part of a rally race on TV once & saw two cars bump into each other, but didn`t see anyone get a 5 second penalty. Instead of goobering up the rally races(which already suck major ass IMO)with some asinine gimmick, why don`t they just make`em good? 💡 Or better yet, GET RID OF THEM ALTOGETHER!! 👍

This would require you to restart the car (simply by pressing the accelerator) and take off from 1st gear. You'd still lose a few seconds time but it would be more realistic than the 5-sec rev limiter.
 
With an Action Replay or Xploder you can turn the 5 seconds off :)

Yeah, that sounds like a good idea.
 
The best way to complete the rally races is to slide your car around the track so that allmost ever sharp corner the back of your car hits the walls , cause then you will not only go around the corner fast but you wont get a 5 sec penalty.
Its not realistic but its the best and fastest way to complete the rally races.
 
LUKE............I am your father! And that just sucks- another way for another cpu to cheat I suppose. Every racing game has one.
 
I guess they really ****ed up this one.

If at least, the AI would aknowledge your presence on the tracks, but it doesn't.

So...

stupid AI + 5 second penalty = Polyphony Digital, the most amazingly stupid bunch of people.
 
There's a penalty for hitting other cars? I never even knew. :dopey:

i stopped doing rallys and missions bc of the cheating AI whores!
 
maaaaan u guys really complain. yes true it does get frustraiting, but i got over it and it seems like some forgotten past, especially in rally mode. but on the missions and some races , **** those mother****ing ***** who keep ****ing hitting me on the ****ing inside. :)

👎 Man, this 5 second penalty is reallly pissing me of for mission 34. I would get really good times and when I get next to those damn A.I. cars and most of the time they crash into me and I get the penalty.
