Sorry it took me a while to respond, it certainly has generated a lot of discussion! It's a novel idea and is interesting for a few applications, but I don't really see much functionality or purpose for the feature outside of the Opinions forum.

That's a good idea, but I like the Red vs. Blue website's method better:

As you post, you gain mod-points. You can then use the points to either mod somebody's post as cool, agree, etc (positive mods), or mod them down for being n00bs. You can also set a preference to not view posts that are below a certain mod level.

EDIT: People with higher amounts of positive mods gain karma on the site (kind of like the way you level up in an RPG). With more karma comes more privlidges, plus bragging rights. ;)

This is more along the lines of what I plan on integrating here in the next version of our site, as Giles mentioned above. However, post ratings will reflect upon the user and not on individual posts. Also, instead of "rating" users on a scale, only users with extremely high ratings will be recongized for it.

i think anything more then an agree button is extreamly silly and worthless. even the agree button itself wont have much of an impact. GTP is just fine the way it is.

Even then, it's not worth it as the Opinions Forum creates interesting views on why people agree and disagree with each thread topic, and creates for better reading.

So what, there’ll be ‘Awesome members’ and everybody else?

It's just a way to encourage consistent, intelligent posts, by creating a standard that all can aspire to.

Well, in theory, it sounds great, but pSI civic hit the nail on the head. I think the Rumble Strip would be a good place to put it, to test it out, but to unload it on the whole forum may be a little too extreme.

I suppose that could be done, but I don't really see why that would be necessary. If there are problems it can always be removed or done away with. I'm curious to hear what exactly are your concerns?

Well....... I dunno. I haven't even seen, or heard for that matter, this ranking before. :indiff: It'll be something to get used to. :indiff:

Also, sorry for going off-topic, but when is the next version going to be up?

I don't think it's quite as drastic of a change as you're expecting...well, it's really not very much at all. If you are really worried then you may be glad to know that I haven't actually worked on that yet, and I may end up ditching the idea altogether if I can't get it just right.

I really don't know, but hopefully mid-December.

if it is limited to one area opions would be right there on it and it would be easier to delete IF it doesnt work out.
Well, we use shared templates, so it is actually much easier to add something across the entire site than just in one forum. But don't worry about the technical side. Are there any other concerns that you have?

Ok, that's good to hear. 👍

That's sooner than I expected. :dopey:

well, i just dont think things need to be more complicated with special points systems and more levels.

there is a local import car site i used to go to often and they tried to tie privileges to posts. they kept changing the value of each post and such things but it didnt keep people from just saying crap so they could get a colored user name or something like that. i understand your saying that more "higher ranking" members would rank what people say, but not only would it be a lot of work on them to rate everything, but what makes someone special in this case? what sort of extra things could a person that has been ranked high do? what is to keep someone from rating them low just because they dont like what the topic is about?

High-ranking members just get the bragging rights for posting informative and worth-while posts. It also gives the other members something to aspire to – this, in turn, will probably create a better quality environment for everyone.

I like this idea! :D

but who is to say what an informative and worthwhile post is? no one can read every reply in every forum on gtp and rank each one and there is no program to do it for us.

You know when you read something that has been a good post. I’ve seen you say to people “That was a good post.” I assume everyone is able to rank a user based on how good, or how bad, their posts are.

If, overall, you post good stuff I’m sure you’d be recognised for it.
