The car weighs at 1,525 kg (3,362 lbs).

More Info.

EDIT : Same goes to Mercedes. What for they have a V12, too much power and too much torque for an SL65 Roadster??

The SL platform is very heavy though, making the power to weight ratio less than spectacular despite the huge power ouput from the Bi-Turbo V12. Even with the 5.5 liter V8 in the SL550 the car still weighs a tankish 4500lbs. The bigger issue for the 65's (across the board - CL, SL, S, etc.) is the fact that they put such puny tires on such a torque monster. I believe most of the 65's use the same tire which is found on the 63's, which is only a 285 width IIRC. Not nearly enough tire for 700+ lb-tq monster :scared:

It is pretty sad that they can put all that time, money, and engineering into building such a car, yet forget to put something so basic as a legitimate tire on the rear

...I go to BMW to buy a sub-Z4 roadster when that niche has always been dominated by the Miata?

This is essentially what the basic Z3 used to do, and it didn't do too badly...

This right here is what 🤬 me off the most about the current form of BMW bashing.. on the one hand you are deriding the brand for its creating of new niche market vehicles... and then in the next sentence, you imply that BMW entering currently well established segments would be a waste of time..

Make your mind up!?

Chill. Someone making a smart-alec remark about a marque you like doesn't necessarily require a defensive response... ;)

So with that in mind, surely that leaves the market open for a lighter and more focused roadster, if their volume model is a bit more soft to suit the majority?

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA Ha... It's a model name... it does what it says on the tin.. .. and also, it doesn't sound like a cross-between a confused spanish waiter and a cat coughing up a hair ball.

Woahhh - how have you deciphered this BMW language? If someone asked me to "sDrive35is", I'd tell them to jog on and get off the pills. What would you do id I asked you to "DriveXM5Division535isMachine760ILPackage"?

As for the car - looks great. Supposed to be a great driver, and combined with great looks makes a great car. I didn't see any CL in the front, but I can see where people are coming from - but its no bad thing. The CL is a looker too.

Not if I don't think they can do it anymore. Ergo the first half the the original post.

True, but just because they've produced some duds, or at least very confusing cars (I've not seen a review yet that's said things like the 5-GT or X6M are actually bad, just pointless...) it doesn't mean they've lost the ability to make a great car when they put their mind to it. The regular M cars are pretty damn good. Hell, even a 316d is an excellent, excellent car. And given that BMW are one of the manufacturers who've committed themselves to reducing weight, downsizing engines and so on, a Z3-type light, fun roadster wouldn't be out of the question.

BMW make niche cars. They have their larger-engined, sophisticated roadster in the Z4. I wouldn't put it past them seeing the opportunity for a more focused car as the MX5 proves there's a market for it...

You're basically dismissing the Z4 sDrive30i then? As I understand it, its a rather "pure" experience by comparison to the rather bourgeois sDrive35i, albeit still burdened by the luxury options and the power tin-top. Toss the "Sport Package" on there, and I understand its a very good car.

I mean, I totally understand your point, and I think you're right. But its not as though BMW left the game altogether. But as for having them build an even cheaper roadster? I'm just not sure if its necessary. A couple of years ago, it would have been a great idea when everyone and their sister was in on the two-seat convertible game, but these days, I think they know that its going to cost too much money to make a significant dent in MX-5 sales. GM is done with it, Chrysler killed their program, Honda pulled out, Toyota has gone without for more than a decade, etc. It leaves a comfy dynamic between the MX-5, 370Z, Z4 and Corvette GS. A sports car for every sense of taste, performance preference, and budget.

It would still look like it does, it would still weigh about 200 pounds more than it used to and it would still be down on power compared to the old car. No company has made a stronger argument for the used car market since Dodge created the Caliber.

They won't make the Z4 M or the coupe version this time, this is what BMW is going to give us. With 340 horsepower, 332 lb-ft of torque and the 7-speed sequential double clutch transmission, this car has the M-like quality written all over. The Z4 sDrive35is looks better than a rubbish Audi TT RS and it has a 3.0L inline-6 engine too. The US version of the Z4 sDrive35is might be detuned because of the US regulations which it will sound stupid, I know.

Ummm, I believe all of the six-pot BMWs sold in the US have a 3.0L displacement. Nothing special there. As for it being "detuned," it isn't. Keep in mind that PS is not the same as BHP. So, while its rated at 340 PS in Europe, its 335 BHP in the Americas. Same number either way.

Anyway, Toronado is right.

Yeah, I got them mixed up. My bad. So what Toronado saying that the Z4 sDrive35is isn't really an M-like quality car or it's just that I got the PS and the HP mixed up?
