The Amazing Stevie WonderMusic

Though it seems a bit late in life, I just discovered the magic of Stevie Wonder's music this past weekend. My favourite song of his - indeed, one of my favourite songs of all time - is Overjoyed. I was wondering if there are any other Stevie fans on GTP, and if someone can recommend other songs that are similar to Overjoyed.

Go out and get the two albums that made his reputation and career: "Innervisions" and "Songs In The Key Of Life", and throw in "Hotter Than July", while you're at it.

EDIT: And as long as you're getting those, it'd be silly to not pick up "Talking Book".

If you want to download a great single like "Overjoyed", try "I Believe".

BTW, did you know that he was a child prodigy, with many hit records when he was known as "Little Stevie Wonder"?

No I didn't know that. Coincidentally, today I flipped on the TV and the Discovery Civilizations channel was running a special on him when he recorded Songs In The Key Of Life. But I tuned in too late and only caught the last 20 minutes. Thanks for the information dude!

If you want to get singles, try these:

All I Do
Send One Your Love
That Girl
Love's In Need Of Love Today
Pastime Paradise
Visions
As
Isn't She Lovely
Lookin' For Another Pure Love
Superstition
All In Love Is Fair
Living For The City
Rocket Love
Lately

I have his 2-Disc "Greatest Hits", called Song Review. A nice diversion from my usual noise and banter, and he has a great voice.

Off the top of my head, these 4 are essential listening:

Superstition
Signed, Sealed, Delivered
Don't You Worry 'bout a Thing
Higher Ground

SW has done so many songs though that it's tough to remember them all! Everytime i listen to one of his albums i think "Oh so he did that originally did he". Incredibly influential fella :)

A very good compilation is "At The Close Of A Century". It's got everything in it you could possibly want... I'm pretty sure it's a 3+ disc set though... So it might be a bit much, but it's all there and all good.

It's never too late to discover the genius of Stevie Wonder :) - I had completely ignored Stevie Wonder until about 5 years ago, when I saw a documentary about the making of the album 'Songs In The Key Of Life' (1976) - and then got the album for my birthday - I listened to it solidly for about 4 months!! 'Sir Duke' and 'I Wish' were the first songs I really liked, but the whole album is a cast-iron masterpiece...

I can also reiterate what Zardoz has said, but to add to that 'Fulfillingness' First Finale' (1974) as well - not quite as solid as 'Innervisions' or 'SITKOL', but some great songs nevertheless.

My favourite Stevie Wonder songs are almost too numerous to list, but ones that I like that are similar in tone to 'Overjoyed' would have to be the following (in approximate order of similaritousnicity):-

Ribbon In The Sky (from 'Original Musiquarium I') ( beautiful song 👍 )
Lately (from 'Hotter Than July')
Too Shy To Say (from 'Fulfillingness' First Finale')
Blame It On The Sun (from 'Talking Book')
Love's In Need Of Love Today and As (from 'Songs In The Key Of Life')
and possibly also Golden Lady (from 'Innervisions')

Hmmm.... I just noticed that my copy of 'Overjoyed' is nowhere to be found on my computer :indiff:

edit: from allmusic.com:- "Celebrating the arrival of a new baby daughter was the genesis of "Isn't She Lovely," from his Songs in the Key of Life album. Wonder was reflecting on the love of his family when he composed "Overjoyed."

edit 2: Check out his discography here:- first album when he was 12, recorded 'Uptight' at 16, and 'Innervisions' at 23... god how depressing :indiff: :D

I do love his music, but I don't own a single CD of his. Maybe it's time I bought one. :) When I was like ten or eleven, favorite musician of my best friend was Stevie Wonder. This was like mid 80's in Japan. All the normal kids were listening to J-Pop type chart topping music and there he was, listening to Stevie Wonder. What an weirdo.

These services are truly revolutionary. They've created a win-win situation for everybody. The artists no longer have their work stolen from them, and we no longer have to blow seventeen bucks on an album that may have only one or two cuts that we really like.

For instance, this thread (Thanks AP!) inspired me to go to Amazon and sample zillions of tracks off Stevie's many, many albums, then cherry-pick about a dozen of my old faves that I had largely forgotten about. I use iTunes and Yahoo's Music Engine to get them.

Any other download service that I should know about? I'm real happy with those two, but I'm sure there are plenty of other good ones.

I do both. On a artist like Stevie Wonder, there are usually 2, 3 greatest hits/collection CD, so I'm probably gonna opt for one of those. :)
