The appeal of low grip driving

The SLS AMG is great fun on comfort softs and drives quite close to it's real life lap times on many tracks. Can't look too close to those lap times though as many cars set them in special tires from their options lists (like the top cars on the Nürburgring charts). The tires may be available and road legal but aren't really what you get stock straight out of the factory.

I watched this and have it on my DVR still. I LOVED it. they were racing hard and DRIVING!!!!!!! Those mini's were oversteering like crazy coming hot into the corners.....and the Ford Galaxies were awesome to see too. Great racing.

Wouldn't it be great if GT5 could replicate that kind of david and goliath battle?
Light cars seem to me to have too small an advantage in terms of handling, over heavier cars.

An historic, cross-ply, race tyre would also be a great addition.

Do sports hards or sports mediums provide the most realistic times? I find myself replicating real life times on mediums more than hards.

I hate comfort tires. Only great for drifting in my opinion. Too twitchy for my tastes on a DS3. If I had a wheel and pedals, my opinion would probably change.

I only race low-grip. Racing softs are a disease.

Comforts add so much depth to the surface of the track.
Road cambers are relatively unimportant with godmode racing tyres on but you really get to appreciate your own skill (or lack of) when you take a something like a lotus esprit around la sarthe or nordschleife on comforts.

On the positive side, though, when you do eventually find a room with comfort tyres that's not a drift room you tend to meet some excellent racers.

Depends on a car and time. Many times are set on different tires. For the SLS the CS seem to give closest times on all the tracks while with GT-R CS gives closer times on Laguna while SH is closer on Nordschleife. With ZR1 SH gives closest time on both but grips too much for Fuji (Apparently japanese media didn't get the option tires used on the other tracks).

Therefore: shuffle rooms.

👍

Or organized racing.

Thats actually one of the main reasons why I choose to drive stock cars over tuned cars. Especially cars that have massive body roll, or vintage cars with soft suspension. The challenge of fighting to keep it inline is the most fun you can have.

Me too.

And makes for more racing. Rather than an event where people just try to shoot from one sloppy corner to the next.

Closer racing too in my experience.

Racing Medium and Racing Soft tires should just be removed. None of the cars come stock with these tires (the highest being Racing Hard tires). In every "track day" lobby that I've hosted, I've very, very rarely seen anybody who kept the stock tires on their cars.

Conversely, drift lobbies only consist of people using Comfort Hards. I like to grip racing and drift using the stock tires only, which, most of the time, is Sport Hard tires.

Thanks Griffith500 and neema_t for posting links to the Skyline video, and for the education on Gan-san:tup:

Oops, only just realised now that Griff posted the video before I did, unless it was a ninja ninja edit while I was editing my post...

I think this thread subconsciously motivated me to get more PC sims including GP Legends and Richard Burns Rally, both of which are all about low grip racing. Hopefully they'll help me learn to drive higher-powered cars on comfort hards, as it is I stick to low powered, light cars for driving or high powered ones just for drifting, I can't actually put in a good lap with, say, the TOM'S Chaser or my tuned 300ZX on anything less than sports softs because of the turbo lag... As soon as that spools up I'm often upside down on the side of the track or something similar.

I do have a "habit" of (/ unavoidable need for) ninja editing, but not this time. :p

Have fun with those sims; GPL recently had the '67 F2 mod released for it, which is a great entry point, although the vanilla '67 F1s are still the real deal. It may be worth reading up on sensible / realistic setups, though, since the defaults are (sim-racer) noob-friendly, and are a bit dull / safe.
GPL is more-or-less solely responsible for my improvements in smoothness and counter-steer trail-braking ability (that should really be "ability"), because I like to run "realistic" diff settings (fewer clutches, steeper coast-side ramp angles) and just-off-neutral fore-aft anti-roll bar settings. In that guise, these cars are probably closest in feel to the Yellowbird in GT5, but the tyres are a bit twitchy in GT5, by comparison.

I must try RBR again, too...

Hmm, I wonder if my sim racing "history" (i.e. GPL etc.) has skewed my preference in favour of the lower grip stuff.

I do miss the Pro events on Prologue. Low grip and usually good racing.

Oh how I miss RBR. I tried getting it to work on my modern pc but there are problems that seem too big to get around. Many nights I spent racing against the clock until my wrists hurt. The best rally simulator of all time certainly.

Do you ever see a 450 PP lobby with no tyre restriction and shake your head?

I play GT5 for the enjoyment above all, not to go as fast as possible all the time.
The most enjoyable driving experiences and some of the best races I've had has been with slippy tyres.

Take this video for example.

This is what GT5 is all about for me.

Do you enjoy low grip racing as much as I do?

+1 I love low-grip racing and drifting. It's such a shame that rooms with tyre restrictions are becoming fewer and fewer indeed. :(

It definitely has, for me, but I wouldn't use the term skewed, everybody else has it skewed.

For me, the reaction of the car to my inputs is infinitely more important to the enjoyment I get than "how fast I'm going".

I'm sat in a chair. I could be driving a 120bhp mx5 or an x2010, either way I'm still sat still, so since it can't thrill me, I want the car to involve me. I know being fast (i.e getting 100%on sticky tyres) is still hard, but for me the slippery tyres require more finesse more of the time.

I still tend to join them, free run lobbies that is, as I don't have the time to race I like just hotlapping whatever car I like and it's nice to not have a completely empty track and sometimes you do find a like minded individual to have fun with... until that 1 guy who can't drive his 800bhp Lambo on Racing Soft trashes both your cars but it could be worse.

This evening I slapped Comfort Softs on my NSX-R and had an awesome few battles with a Swedish player who was using an M3,also on CS, who eventually invited me to join a website he races with which I shall strongly consider. It inspires me each time I see just 1 guy using a 'normal' car that isn't super tuned and on slicks, I usually match my car to them and find them to have a little battle with.

As for low grip vs high grip, alot of it is definitely to do with wheel or pad users. I used to use high grip tires almost always when I was only on a pad then eventually moved to Sport Soft but any further and I felt uncomfortable racing closely with people (depending on power output and such) that the car would snap wildly with no warning and I'd cause an a huge crash. Then now as a wheel users I can't enjoy Racing tyres on most cars, especially not road cars, as the most fun on a wheel is when you're driving a car that allows you to manipulate it's behaviour with precise movements be it through your own choice or to fight a car like the Yellowbird in to doing your bidding a task which carries little entertainment for a pad user.

It's the reason I've stopped racing online, really tired of all the rooms with no tyre regulations.

I dont particularly like low grip driving and use RS on virtually everything - although using RS on a Prius for example just isnt right, almost feeling like an X2010 in slow motion you have so much grip compared to power.
I prefer the higher cornering speeds and shorter breaking distances RS tires give, keeps the speed up more. I understand why people like low grip driving, and I agree that it can be fun. Its just that the only times i've really enjoyed it is when im using either the Tank Car or a near-stock FD RX7, the latter of which was only on sports mediums.
Comments like this, however, make me laugh:

RE: an earlier comment that was along the lines of 'you need to use low grip tires or you arent good', thats nonsense.
I was in a room the other night with a bunch of people that I belive often race on low grip tires. It was 450pp Sports Medium, with only abs allowed. The first race around the ring, I got quite badly beaten (not last!), albeit that was partly due to me climatising to the tires and partly as I was using the Tank Car.
The next 7-8 races were very close, I used a stock (barring transmission and supsension etc) '00 RX7 type RS in them all at 448pp, I could run with them and often was faster than them, despite the fact I never use the tires.
Im not claiming im great or anything - I know im not.

"Sports Medium" are not low grip tires.

This is exactly the kind of thread I've been thinking should've started long ago. People should start restricting tires a lot more often. I'm getting bored of looking for a comfort soft/sports hard server.

Thanks a lot TheHarrismonkey for making this thread.

:boggled: Have you been reading this forum for very long?
At least 15% of ALL the threads in the GT5 forum have some gripe about tires being "too easy" or "too grippy" or some complaint about pub lobbies all having open tire restriction, or some lament about people using slicks all the time. Etc. Etc.

If I had time on my hands, I'd do a quick search and link the 50,000 threads here containing complaints about grippy tires.

And 15% of all posts have the same "this has been said before" gripe.

I have now opend a room called "pro fair race" ID: 1472-6118-3701-4255-6390
If you like good quality races :)

If you knew about that 15%, why did you not know about the 15% that complain about tires being too grippy??

Seems to me if you knew about one, you wouldn't be ignorant of what brings them about. lol

You might want to check out the online section of the forum:
https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=12

There are MANY races organized with "lower grip" tires.

The BMW 2002 Turbo '73 race for example:

COMFORT SOFT TIRES!!

Sigh.
I should've reminded myself I was writing on an internet forum where that 15% want to prove they just know more than others. 15% of the threads here certainly aren't about people using slicks so what's the point? I never understood posts like yours purpose of which is solely to kill someones take on a conversation.

Bleh, sorry about the off-topic.

You just want me to do it... to post links to the 50,000 threads in this forum where people complain how everyone else uses too-grippy tires... That's it isn't it? LOL :D  :D :) :sly: ;)

This is all meant in jest.
*I* should've reminded myself that on the internet in text, 15% of the population is going to miss the light-hearted joking, even with a pile of emoticons stressing the joviality.
:ouch:

It is really sad that every room created online everybody runs RS tires :yuck: This is why I created PGTR, for people looking to get a realistic experience. Hopefully we can get some races in tonight.

I've never seen RS tires in a shuffle room... and I go into lots of those. :p

But seriously... I think if everyone who wasn't running slicks posted in this thread, it would have 10,000 pages. :D
It's for real... people do it!!

When I host, I never do any compound above Sports Soft for street cars and Racing Hard for race cars. Racing Softs are boring, sports tires keep it interesting and separate the men from the boys :p
