Intel Report: Audi A5 Sportback

3411992306_6c2a5f6bfc_o.jpg

QUICK BACKGROUND:
Confirmed by multiple sources within Audi and rumored by just about every automotive news outlet, the A5 Sportback wil be a stylish 5-door variant somewhere between a coupe and an Avant. The A5 Sportback marks and expansion of the 'Sportback' family of cars from Audi that was begun with the A3 and will also see an A7 version once that model is launched.

Drawings sourced directly from Audi AG's design department suggest a face lifted wholesale from the successful A5 coupe, so everything ahead of the A-pillar is expected to be shared with the two-door. Two rear doors will be added to the sides, though the low-slung roof of the coupe also appears to be retained, with an up-swept rear window line consistent with that of the Sportback concept shown at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show.

Fourtitude's own sources at Audi say that such a specialty body style is entirely due to the flexibility afforded to Audi through the use of its modular longitudinal platform (MLB) architecture. The revolutionary platform makes body style differentiation more affordable, and the fastback 5-door configuration similar to the C2 Audi 200 Avant are one way that Audi can maximize on its heritage and differentiate itself from its luxury market competitors.

Thanks to MLB, the A5 Sportback will be slightly wider than the A4, just like the A5 on which it's based. However, the Sportback will match the longer wheelbase of the A4.

Our own sources confirm A5 Sportback and S5 Sportback variants. No surprise, S5 versions will use the 3.0T supercharged V6 used in the S5 cabriolet - the same engine the S5 coupe will also use from the 2011 model year when the car is due for a freshening.

Our contacts told us that an RS 5 Sportback has not been planned. Audi's trademark bulged fenders would make a difficult sell for such a niche vehicle as all-new rear quarter panels and door skins would need to be designed.

Other rumors in the media have suggested an RS 5 Sportback could go back to the RS performance directive pioneered by the RS 2 where Porsche develops the performance bump and Porsche-inspired styling upgrades are also applied. One of our sources suggested this rumor has no basis. While it sounds intriguing and Porsche is effectively the new corporate owner of Audi, it just doesn't make much sense. Stuttgart could have developed a tuned 3.0T as the engine is set for use in the Cayenne and was in favorable position for the rumored-to-be-cancelled baby Cayenne known as the Roxster, it still doesn't quite add up.

Just out of curiosity, we did create a Porsche-inspired RS 5 mockup for use with this Intel Report, but that sells us even less on the idea. As one can see by looking at the image, an Porschefied RS 5 Sportback would be painfully close to the Panamera in appearance. Were Porsche to want back into the Audi RS product development process, our guess is that they'd want a vehicle that wouldn't be so close in configuration to their own cars... say an RS 4 Avant or an RS 6 Avant. Needless to say, we're not giving much weight to the Porsche-RS 5 Sportback rumor.

CHANCES FOR NORTH AMERICAN SALES:
Don't count on it. Europe loves Avants. 5-door configurations play well in the EU where they're often misunderstood in the USA. If the A4 Avant has a hard time finding a market, the A5 Sportback may find it even harder.

and a car I see quiite often which has some quite tasteful rims I think.

Thanks, that looks great! what an awesome looking daily driver. Thanks also for the link:tup:

The Audi Q7 – The New Generation

3447420284_d75c04dc57_o.jpg

When it was first rolled out three years ago, the Audi Q7 performance SUV immediately achieved a leadership position – as a sporty, comfortable as well as high-performance recreational and business vehicle on a grand scale. Now Audi is making it even better – more elegant and more efficient, with lower emissions: the Q7 3.0 TDI consumes only 9.1 liters per 100 kilometers (25.85 US mpg). And now it’s also available in a new version as a TDI clean diesel, with the world’s cleanest diesel technology and even lower fuel consumption of only 8.9 liters/100 km (26.43 US mpg).

The Q7 is the large Audi for sporty individualists, for people who are seeking a vehicle that will take them anywhere they want to go for sports, recreation, and business. Its dynamic proportions and distinctive lines express this character, and subtle modifications endow its styling with even more elegance.

My first thought: "Rappers are so going to have a field day with this one." For gods sake, Audi, stop copycating the R8 with every car in the lineup! And enough with those LEDs, I've already seen them on chav'd up Mondeos, that's how bad they are..

Yeah I agree with those stupid fairylight things. It looks OK for the R8, and maybe just the RS6. Also those overcomplicated headlights make it worse.

What was wrong with those? I think they look great.

It's to do with brand image, Audi's top of the range model (the R8) has the fairy lights therefore to make people know that the other cars they make are Audi's they have to fit these fairy lights. It's the same with Ford, look at their new body style, they all look the same. Every company seems to be doing it these days and it is annoying.

Are you sure?

As far as I am aware the LED running lights were fitted to the R8, A5/S5 primarily as a design and 'safety' feature, which has now been adopted into the rest of the range. As Audi was the first manufacturer to kick off the LED headlights/running lights people now associate them with the company.
Full LED headlights were debuted on the V10 FSI earlier this year, these are much more environmentally friendly than using conventional bulbs as it uses less energy for a brighter output. I imagine will be fitted to the more exclusive models in the range later down the line. However Audi is not the only manufacturer with LED lighting fitted to their cars (Porsche and Aston Martin to name a few).

You do have a very good and valid point there though which is not entirely wrong.👍

Still no R8 presence in any of the GT classes at Le Mans this year? Much more interesting than the LMP's because they're just production cars with-a-twist.

why hasn't anyone mentioned that Audi TT-RS test drives and reviews are starting to roll in? I've read a few already, and seen couple videos. it sounds good, looks good, and goes even faster. no automatic tranny available. 1450kg, 340bhp and 450nm of torque. 4.5s 0-60, and runs neck to neck with 911 Carrera S.

I wasn't actually expecting this thread to ever be revived. I'll put your name on the list, but I won't update the thread anymore because i'm no longer a fan of Audi's like I used to be.

The quattro is an exception of course.;)
