If you are using Photoshop or ImageReady you can use layers to speed up the process.
- First, pick the dimentions of the finals. 100px X 100px?
- Make a new layer and put a black 1px border around it (pencil tool works fine).
- Resize your window so you have some "pasteboard area" to work with.
- Now just start dragging in the new images. If you drop them directly on the open image, it will add them as a layer directly above the current layer, which would put it on top of the last one.
- Use "Free Transform" in the Edit menu to size and possition the image.
- "Save As" as you go.
When I started on those 600+ avatars I realized real quick that I needed a fast system. It also helps to know the keyboard shortcuts for Photoshop. You'll save a lot of time with one hand on the keyboard and one hand on the mouse. You can also create Photoshop Actions to speed up the process, but we'll save that for another lesson (:
Oh, there are times when you can't drag an image. The images have to be the same "mode", and most of them are going to be RGB, but if you have a Gif it may be Index Color and need to be converted before you can drop it on your working image. The way I usually do this is just open the file, convert to RGB, then use the layer window to drag it to the file I'm doing the work in.
The other nice thing about doing it this way is that you can save a Photoshop Document when you're done and you'll have everything in one file instead of all those little ones.
I'll make screen shots of what I'm talking about in a minute. First I have to go fix a woman's computer. Tech-Support, the lesser of my duties. Weeee ....
