According to Economist magazine's "quality of life assessment" Ireland has been named the best place to live in the world. I'm sure many will dissagree except for our Irish friends.

The cold weather would make me nice and grumpy.

My guess is that "family and social values" means religion, seeing that most of the countries on that list are Scandinavian.

I don't know about the rest of the country but Dublin and the surrounding area are great places to visit. Bars in Dublin centre are open until 2/3 every night, but I haven't been there for two years and don't really know what it's like now the smoking ban is in place. Probably alot of unhappy smokers.

This is a stupid article. What good does it bring?

How can I make a short cut to sites like you have just done?

Just copy and paste a valid link. One that starts with "http"

Are there rankings based on accordance with one's philosophical principles? Most seem to be based on whichever states have been the best at implementing psuedo-socialism and has low risk factors.

The smoking ban has had a good effect, I think. I was out there earlier in the year, and you can go out and have a good time without being poisoned. Also, the pub landlords understand that people actually want to smoke, so tend to provide beer gardens with heaters, where they can.

That said, Dublin is really expensive to go out in. And at the weekends, the only Irish people you'll meet are working. Living in Edinburgh, as I do, I understand how the airlines make money: all the Irish ship out to Edinburgh and other UK cities, as all the UK cities empty into Dublin. It does make the place a bit of a party, but low on authenticity.

I also spent some time down in County Laois (pronounced Leesh), and had a lot of fun. Things are a lot more relaxed - there's an atmosphere that is condusive to having fun, without feeling pressured to have fun.

I'm going to a wedding in Tipperary next year, which should be an absolute scream. I love going to Ireland, but sometimes it's hard not to be cynical about Dublin. Many people think that Belfast now is what Dublin was 10 years ago.

...not to mention murdered/missing backpackers.

You are all forgetting that there are also tighter drinking controls in Ireland aswell. Landlords can get pretty big fines for serving someone who is already intoxicated.

italy.

hehe.....gotta watch for the theives in naples though. they are MASTERS of their craft.

I like the US. I won't be going anywhere else anytime soon.

Its also a benefit that the U.S. is big, one state is the size of a country in Europe.

Finally, one of these lists that doesn't overrate Canada. We don't deserve to be the best country in the world to live in, as we have had that distinction many times in recent years. Although Canada is a great country to live in, our leadership is, for lack of a better word, absolutely hideous. We have hideously corrupt and/or inept politicians in office, many of whom easily got re-elected. This greed/ineptitude is crippling Canadian social programs, which is one of the things that makes this country great.

That, and there are way too many stupid people at least in Toronto (who elect said politicians).

Agreed 👍. As much as I support the ideals that the Liberal Party follows, their leaders are just horrible.

Were is Sierra Leonne on that list? I want to live there!

....SARS.

...lol.

In all honesty, I think around 100 people (maybe less) were infected by SARS, and they were all in Toronto or the surrounding area if I'm not mistaken. The media just completely blew sars out of proportion. For example, it's been shown that a normal, healthy person has a 99% chance of survival if infected. Very scary.

And that's a good avatar Omnis!

It's too crappy to even be included on the list! I'd rather live in a landfill than in Sierra Leone. Seriously.
