Hi all,

I am looking to purchase a new wheel for GT5, I was a G25 owner a few years ago, and was broadly impressed with the wheel, but the H Gate Shifter really let it down I thought - it seemed very floppy and nothing like a real gearchange at all. Of courese it'd be lovely to have force-feedback through a shifter but that is very unlikely to happen in the near future.

Anyway, I digress. I am looking for a new wheel with a clutch, and ideally, the best shifter out there. Does anyone have any ideas what might suit me?

Depends on how much you want to spend and what you want to use it for.

I havent used them all but Ive used the Shifter from the G25, G27, Fanatec and FrexGP. I personally think the FrexGP H shifter is top notch but its limited to use on the PC and costs over $300. After that I would honestly say the G27 shifter. It is a marked improvement over the G25 especially after a few tweaks but really doesnt compare to the Frex and you lose the sequential mode. Next and could be on the same level or maybe down just a notch would be the Fanatec. Its really solid but felt kinda clicky however you gain a separate unit for sequential shifting. Last IMO would be the G25. It IMO felt pretty sloppy.
Fanatecs Shifter only works with Fanatec wheels but they have an adapter to use your G25 pedals
Logitecs shifter only works with the g25 or g27 respectively.

I personally just sold my G27. I really had no complaints other than the APElectix load cell becoming unavailable and me not wanting to spring for the perfect pedal. A buddy of mine has the Fanatec GT3RSv2 with the clubsport pedals(has a load cell for the brakes). Even though the shifter doesnt feel like an improvement(maybe a tiny step down) the overall package is pretty nice.

I don't own any wheel myself, but from what I've read around the forum. The Fanatec shifters are very firm and clicky compared to the G25/7. Ideally there is a guide on making the G25 shifter firmer though i cant tell you how much firmer it will make it.

Thanks for the input.

I do recall reading that guide as well koop, something about messing with elastic bands to try to give it a bit of resistance.

This wheel will be used for GT5, GT5:P and TDU2, as well as any other racing games that come out on Xbox or PS3 that take my fancy. I don't own a PC, only a Mac, so that Frex item - awesome though it does look - is useless to me.

I've looked into the G27. £300 is a bit too much for me to spend on a wheel.

I'm looking into the Fanatec Carrera Wheel. Doesn't seem bad at €160, I could then go through later and get a better wheel and pedals. I quite like the idea of what your saying about the brake pedal.

Only issue is nowhere seems to have it in stock. Discontinued?

I think that they are just out of stock because I (hopefully) am getting mine tomorrow, only Fanatec sell them.

It would be a great time for Thomas at CEO of Fanatec to show up.
He goes by the username 'Fanatec...'

It doesn't say Sold out for me, you may be within a chance.

The Carrera is in stock and we just started shipping this week. It is not discontinued as we just started to ship the first units!

You have no choice then...the only wheel that works for XB and PS3 is the 911 Turbo S.

Sweet. Thanks

Hmm, guess the XB is out the window then, no FT wheel that's sold in my territory will do XB. Bye bye Forza...

I have modified my G25 shifter with the resistance mod and the no clicking mod, and it now feels like a completely different shifter. It still doesn't have the resistance of a real shifter, but couple that with the no clicking mod, and it does make for a different experience. I like the fact that the G25 shifter still has sequential mode also, over the G27. When GT5 comes out, and I am driving a race car that is sequentially shifted, I want to be shifting it that way also. Same goes for paddle shifted and standard H-pattern shifting. I have also been practicing in GT5P driving RHD cars, so that I can get used to driving them for GT5. Of course, if it is LHD, I will move my shifter, and drive that way.

I'm pretty sure the clubsport shifter that fanatec is making will be, by far the best option for the PS3 and 360.
