What in you opinion, is the greatest sounding automotive engine (excl motorbikes)?

Of course there are variations to a theme, a Ferrari V8 doesnt sound the same as a Ford V8. So, when mentioning you choice, include which manufacturer you have in mind. If you feel i have left one out, just tell us which engine you voted for and in particular, which manufacturer.

This is not a punt for "civcs hav thj best note lol". Keep it mature ;)

Oh, my choice? A toughie. My Gallardo and Carrera Gt V10's sound magnificent. But the best orchestra comes from a 911 ;)

Rotory would heve been a good addition to the poll. ( I know you can choose other, but rotorys are popular)

Inline 12 - Ferrari Testarossa
Boxer 12 - Ferrari 512 (I think that is the correct model name).

And Viper - ;)

V16. The best ever engine sound I heard comes from the BRM V16.

Other than that I have to go with V8 generally, I mean how many other V16:s are there to compare with? (ok, there is the cizeta and the Caddie but I have never heard them).

I thought it was a V10?

Good move on that Keep it mature stuff. That'll narrow the amount of members posting in here, significantly 👍

I'd have to say a Holden V8, but I do agree with you Mike. A 911 GT3 sounds like music too. After watching the Porsche GT3 cup racing in Aussie. I've really come to respect them. I have a model of a GT3 on the way now too. I'll link you guys up if you'd like. Even though it is already in two threads.

Without a doubt or second thought.... the Inline/Straight 6.

Why?

Nissan Skyline. Enough said.

It's hard, they're all awesome in their own ways.. :(

Oh, never - never judge how a car sounds after listening to a recording, there are certain frequencies that a microphone can't capture nor speakers can play back so you nearly always miss out on the full, authentic sound.

That's why you get your butt out to car shows and listen to them properly. You have to admit. They sound oh so beutiful through speakers and mics anyway.

I love love love the sound of a V8 with open exhaust. It's unstoppable. A lot of 6 cylinder engines (any type) can sound nice too. But I hope no one votes rotary. I like rotaries a lot but they sound terrible!

I disagree. The Scoot RX-7 at full rev. makes me orgasm.

Anyways, I chose the I-6. I've had nothing but great luck with that style engine, unlike V-8's and V-6's. It even went as far as to start right up after being tipped over and having the oil drain from the pan towards the pistons, without any after-effects.

I like rotaries too. My brother has a turbo RX-7 and it sounds pretty nice. :)

Inline 12 - Ferrari Testarossa
Boxer 12 - Ferrari 512 (I think that is the correct model name).

The Testarossa has a 5 litre flat 12 cylinder, just like the 512. What modern car would have an inline 12 anyway?

True :grumpy: For some reason I thought the 'rossa was a I-12 :indiff:

There should be a poll option for a 'flatplain cranked' V8 as well as normal V8 - they sound totally different.

Air Cooled Boxer 6 ( porsche ) 1997 and earlier I believe...after they went to different cooling, the engine sound changed...

The most glorious mechanical sound I've ever heard came from a Ferrari 333SP. So the V12 has my vote.

I'm sorry. No mere automotive engine can hold up a candle once you've heard a Merlin V-12 from a P-51 howling by right off the deck, or felt the ground rumble from a 2,000 hp Pratt & Whitney radial firing up.

Cars have been powered by RR Merlins in the past... so it kind of is an automotive engine as well...

p.s. i think it sounded better in the Spitfire anyway ;)

Now that's flat out cheating, Duke. What does a Merlin displace.. like 1650 cid? :p

Yeah, 1650 cubic inches - or 27 litres, in modern automotive terms. Later versions made about 1 horsepower per cubic inch, too; not too shabby for 1944. But hey, like I said, aircraft engines kinda spoil you for car engines once you hear them.

Best car I ever heard was (what must have been a geniune) Lamborghini Countach, I've seen 2 or 3 before but they must have been fakes. This one sounded awesome! :D

Mmmm V12
