This lady is off her rocker, God save us if she decides to run for President...

New York Post
May 24, 2006 -- WASHINGTON - In a surprise move yesterday, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton called for "most of the country" to return to a speed limit of 55 mph in an effort to slash fuel consumption.

"The 55-mile speed limit really does lower gas usage. And wherever it can be required, and the people will accept it, we ought to do it," Clinton said at the National Press Club.

Before sounding off on the benefits of a lower speed limit, Clinton called for a combination of tax incentives, the use of more ethanol-based fuel and a $50 billion fund for new energy research to cut the consumption of foreign oil 50 percent by 2025.

She also pushed for half of all the nation's gas stations to have ethanol pumps by 2015, and for every gas station to have them by 2025.

Didnt we learn ANYTHING from the last time that we had a 55MPH speed limit? No one is going to obey it, it makes travel take longer, and really does very little to increase fuel mileage... I'm sure Brock Yates is pretty pissed-off right about now...

I remember seeing Yates once talk about making an advanced drivers liscence so those of us with some driving skill can pay extra so we can go faster. Yeah, I am sure he is pissed about a 55mph limit. I am too. Why have all these expensive interstates with wide lanes, and straight roads to go 55? We can do that on two lanes safely.

I am a Liberal and Hillary really gets on my nerves sometimes.

I also think it's funny that she is pushing for ethanol in all gas stations. Ethanol is already more expensive than gasoline, and it's only slightly more renewable as an energy source.

She's actually incorrect about 55mph being the best speed to save gas. I happend to know for a FACT that the best mpg saving speed limit differs for each car. It's about gearing and RPMs. 70mph is where the following cars get the best mpg: Ford Fusion V6, Ford Freestyle, Five Hundred, & Ford Focus. I know because 3 of them have trip computers that compute the mpg and at 70mph I got 32-39mph in the 3 V6 models and the 4th I own two of.

Oh and Mrs. Clinton can go **** herself. She's poison for this country...you people that think Bush is bad? Yea, wait till this warlock gets in office. Any freedoms you Americans love about cars is about to go out the window. Oh and get ready for a larger tax on petrol as well if she gets elected. Euro petrol prices here we come!

Our speed limit here is 70mph. Everyone goes 75-80 just to keep up. 55mph. My car can harly idle in 6th gear at 55mph. The cam lobes too much if im under 1,200rpm. Especially in 6th gear. Like mentioned above, going 55 compared to 70 doesnt save enough gas to even notice at all. I get my best gas mileage at 75mph.

Thank God I'm a republican.... :dunce:

So stupid, it's not even funny. Great going, Hill. Let's just crush all our cars and drive priuses while we're at it. Oh you'd like me to bend over and pull my pants down?

:irked::irked:

It won't pass. But, the fact that Americans can't learn from history has me a little worried..

💡 Time to invest in a Radar jammer!

You know what's awsome about that? Is the Prius is actually the biggest inside joke ever. Anybody that lives in the southern half of the US will NEVER gain any mpg by going hybrid...and why do you ask? Air Conditioning that's why. I've had 2 cars without A/C--here in Texas--where it gets over 105ºF daily during the summer--and I fried in them--and no I will not allow myself to not have/use A/C again--because I will broil inside my car. Buying a Prius means you are a hypocrit. It gets **** MPG, it's heavy, it's ugly, it has terrible interior build quality, it's way too expensive, and most importantly it's a tree hugger icon. Toyota has made so much money decieving the public on the Prius that it's just startling. The only hybrid that maybe would be ok is the Civic Hybrid--but still in the southern US it wouldn't matter. I get so angry when someone tries to tell me the benefits of going hybrid and they live in the south--they are just full of it. So buy a Honda fit, get your 35+ MPG city and be merry.

Well since my car is a '79 Super Beetle. I'm not completely against the drop. Simply because I get MUCH better gas mileage doing 60 than if I did 70-75.

And if it was lowered I wouldnt feel ridiculous going 60 because I wouldnt be below the limit.

But if I owned any other car, I'd be totally against the raise.

Where is ethanol more expensive? It's not in the midwest.

Ethanol is not a solution but a way to buy time because hydrogen and other alternatives aren't ready yet. Until then I proudly support the use of ethanol. I find it funny how the people on the coasts get a separate set of facts about ethanol then we do in the middle of the country.

55kph  Our speed limits for built up residential areas is about 50kph, on motorways we can do over 110kph, legally.

Time for a bigger motor or a new car. I used to own a '68 w/a 1600 and had no problem going 75-80.

The Clintons are so out of touch with reality it's not funny.

It's actually 55MPH not KPH, 50KPH is what 30mph? 110KMH is around 70mph. I live in Canada but I favour MPH better than KPH for some odd reason.

Damn my late night observational skills, damn them to hell. 55mph isn't too bad I guess but 70mph is better. I favour mph myself but since the thread was about American speed limits I didn't notice it was mph properly and I used kph also that what I hear used most from Americans.

Sammy hagar wrote his song "I cant drive 55" after a officer pulled him over for doing 63 on the highway. If this law does go into effect then a lot of people are going to get speeding tickets. Not to mention the cost to replace all of the signs along the highway, it was bad enough when they did it at 65, now there going to cost themselfs MORE money in replacing them with slower speed signs? Maybe the money they get from speeders will make up for the sign change
👎👎👎👎👎

Ladies and gentlemen, this is the result of nepotism. Let's all remember that just because she was married to the president doesn't mean she's smart.

WTF she mean people will follow and respect it? People don't even follow the limits now!

If this was to pass, I'd continue to do 65-70Mph on the George Bush Turnpike.:dopey:

...Didnt they just raise the speed limit in parts of Texas to almost 80MPH because so many people were speeding?

I know that here in Western Michigan, despite the fact that the speed limit is 70MPH, most folks are doing 75+... Heading further east twards Detroit, the speed increases to near 90MPH on average. The same can be said when I was last in Miami, as most folks down there are doing well above 80MPH in a posted 65 or 70.

Despite the fact that my Jetta is turning more than 3,000 RPM above 70MPH, I can average about 33-35MPG doing 75MPH. My Dad's Avalanche averages best right around 70-80MPH, pushing him up from 16MPG to about 23MPG on the highway... And then there are all the stories about the Chevrolet Camaros and Corvettes with the Tremec T-56s that can get around 30MPG when traveling above 70MPH (most guestimates put it at 80MPH).

my car gets about 33 mpg at 80. granted, it'll do 35-38 at 45, but, 55 it's down to around 35 so I'll really only lose about 2mpg going 25mph faster.
this is just a horrible ploy to try to look away from the obvious fact that gas companys are raping each American citizen. and that we have massive loads of oil in the gulf that isnt being touched, let alone Alaska.

If you actually slowed down those 10 mph cyou could save around 1 mpg. A Car and Driver editor tested the theory a while back (albeit with a Lexus hybrid RX450h) Problem is, only a minority could stand going that slow, and that would mean a bigger difference between the slow cars and fast cars on the highway. That would only cause more comfusion, frustration, and ultimately wrecks. People get pissed when there's a slow bastard in front of them, and it'd only be worse if slow bastards were rampant.
I would still drive what I do, about 65-70, no matter the speed limit. It's safe, my mileage is good, and it neither annoys other people or myself.

Yes, but that apparently has only gone into effect west and south of DFW.

The limits here are still 60-65, and people still pull 80.:indiff:

That was also in an automatic, AND an SUV which has neither a gearbox with gears that are capable of very high speeds (and thus are really low rpms at 70-80mph) or any aerodynamic effeciency.

In a manual car, you'll find a whale of a difference.

PS C&D sucks. ;)

EDIT the speed limit around Indianapolis (as in, around the edges of the city) is about 95 :p

This is ridiculous. Going 55mph isn't going to solve anything.

Having driven in Germany this month for about 2 weeks with a Mercedes C220, I happen to have found out that the following speeds get you the following mileage:

120km/h - 7.3l/100km (75mph, 32mpg)
140km/h - 7.1l/100km (87mph, 33mpg)
150-165km/h - 7.5l/100km (93-103mph, 31mpg)
~200km/h - 8.0l-8.5/100km (125mph, 27-29mpg)

Btw, the 200km/h assuming not uphill. On uphill (4% grade max), you'd have to slow down to 170.

Also, btw, if you wanna consume less fuel, have more cars like european tdi's/cdi's. My buddy's Citroen C4 in europe with a 1.6l 4cyl diesel does like 4.0l-4.5l/100km (50-59mpg) doing like 80km/h (50mph), and like 5.5-6.5l/100km in the city (36-43mpg).

So my conclusion is that somewhere between 135km/h to 150km/h you get best fuel efficiency (84mph to 93mph). Again, this depends on the car. As far as I know, the real optimal fuel efficiency highway cruising speed will depend on the car gearing and RPM, but 55mph is definetely not the most efficient.
