So down here in New Zealand we're automatically connected to the Asia/Pacific server, which you'd think would make sense. Trouble is, my connection fluctuates from one to three bars, which I thought was just down to slow internet on my part.

Out of curiosity, I just played GT Sport on my USA account, and was surprised to see that my connection was actually better. A steady three bars, without fluctuations.

Does anyone know where these servers are, and why I get a better connection outside my region?

If i remember correctly, there is a couple of direct pipes from Oceania to West Coast USA. However there isn't a direct pipe to japan. We get routed through Singapore first i believe. Not sure if NZ would have to go through AUS first to get up north.

As an AUS player i get a stable 3 bars on most games however there are times it drops but ill notice everyone from AUS drops as well.

Yes, we have to go through Australia, so our connection drops when yours does. If only I could race on my kiwi account on the American server.

I was going to make a joke about the NBN however in reality it makes no difference.
A wider freeway doesn't mean you can drive any faster than the speed limit. It will still take the same amount of time to get from point A to B.

Although i'm still waiting for my area to receive a proposed date for NBN.....

The North American servers you rarely see a racer from Brazil with more than about 3 bars and often times it is 1 or 2 bars with so much lag you have no idea where they actually are at any given time on the track. See quite a few lower connections out of Mexico as well.

I always just figured it was the quality of that countries infrastructure and internet services as just about all the players from those countries show lower connection strengths.

Im sure its only a ping test to PSN servers. Not quality. Everyone else is just at a geographic disadvantage.

I have never seen anyone from Australia or NZ with a full bar yet.
I raced Nasanu, a former GTPlanet member from Australia, a few days ago during the Bathurst Grp.3 Daily Race and he actually had a full five bars. My only assumption was that he must live in Japan because other than him because, like you, I’ve only seen three bars from fellow Aussies.
