Another aspect of this past decade- the debut of the Daytona Prototype. Sure it silenced traditional sportscar racing in Grand-Am, but it gave the series its own identity starting in 2003. Daytona Prototypes were the future of sportscar racing in Grand-Am. However, there was that epic upset as a lowly Porsche GT car won the 2003 24 Hours of Daytona. Uh-oh! Whether you like Daytona Prototype or not, this is a very unique set of prototype race cars. I do remember here on GTP that I've had a few spats on Daytona Prototypes. Like for example, what top-flight sportscar racing series has prototypes with decal headlights? There's a certain method to racing these machines.

Okay. So maybe Daytona Prototypes aren't any of the lovely Le Mans racing machines. But as with many things, you have to like something with its own identity. Surely Daytona Prototypes fit the bill as far as a different style of sportscar racing. DPs have even accounted for some pretty close finishes at a few races. I think one that stands out to me was a race a few years ago at Circuit de Gilles Villeneuve where it was either a two-way or three-way battle for the win in DP.

Speaking of great sportscar racing finishes (and going to another series), my hands-down winner was the epic GT2 finish to the 2007 12 Hours of Sebring. It was Risi Competizione vs. Flying Lizard in an epic final-lap clash. I will NEVER forget that finish!
