Having just completing this and writing a small report on PSU.com i thought id post the results here:

http://www.psu.com/forums/threads/246042-The-Drink-Driving-Effect

a summary of the event is listed below:

This thread and idea may have developed from boredom, but it seems its already to late to hit the brakes.

I have decided for no other reason that im bored, no one wants to go out and i want to get drunk that im going to test the theory that alcohol severely affects your driving, this test may already be severly flawed due to the fact the only thing i have to watch for is the apex of every corner and not pedestrians and other road users but im quite interested to see exactly how it affects lap times.

the test is simple:

1 track - cape ring
1 car - corvette ZR1 (700bhp, all aids off except 2 ABS & sports hard tyres)
1 contender - that would be me

going to do 5 laps + 1 warm up lap, firstly sober then in 2 can increments. average of the 5 laps will be taken and the fastest lap to see if the lap times are affected.

The track is chosen because it has a long distance, and requires smooth flowing steering and throttle input which i think will really affect me after a few cans. the car was chosen because it requires 110% concentration even without the influence of alcohol

I intend to go upto 6 cans, though depending how tipsy i am after that i may have a couple more.

Just completed the sober laps (well i had 1 bottle earlier but that wont have had a huge effect):

Lap Times (sober):

1 - 2:58:168 (warm up)
2 - 2:56:565
3 - 2:54:765
4 - 2:57:567
5 - 2:55:350

3 - 2:54.720
4 - 2:58.006
5 - 2:55.135
6 - 2:53.429

Fastest lap - 2:53.429 (-1.336 seconds)
Average lap - 2:55.319 (-0.508 seconds)
Slowest lap - 2:58.086 (+0.519 seconds)

Welcome to GTPlanet.

It's amazing, your selfless devotion, taking one for the team like that!

Oh, and please keep images to 900px or less on the long edge.

I can honestly say i agree with your findings..

Once you start getting tipsy it because far harder to be so precise and consistent.

So that settles it, you drive best when you're just a little drunk. Lightly tipsy, even.

Well, I'm off to grab a couple cans of beer before I drive to my mate's. :)

...If a cop stops me on the way I'll just be like "just had a couple cans to improve my driving ability, nothing to worry about, officer". With this new found clinical study, I can hold that up in court.

1-3 beers makes me faster 👍 So the results are agreed!

lol

edit,

and nice choice on the extra smooth! :p

lol, appreciate the comments, though im not sure itll stand up in a court of law, still worth a try though! though its good to know if im a few tenths of a gold a little tipple might sway the results

My experience has always been that driving drunk is not what's bad, it's not knowing you are drunk and driving that's bad.

When I am a little off I know and I drive more carefully and focus more, also counciously drive more slowly. I am fairly certain this counters being a little drunk in terms of response times and comprehension.

Now when you are ****** drunk and can't walk straight, all bets are off, that's not what I am talking about at all.

The danger zone is the time you are drunk but don't realize it so don't take precaucions.

So my rule isn't that drunk driving is bad, but that any kind of being unfocused and not realizing it (whether drunk, sick, just distracted) is bad.

this is uncanny

I had a couple of drinks and took on the cape ring in my ZR1 a couple of days ago.

it was the most frustrating thing ever

never again.

You just stole my idea, Sir! :(. Dude, as someone on the thread just said, you need a medal for awesome-ness!.

Cool experience

Would need a few people to participate here (can't be too hard :)) to have a good statistic ;)

Lap Times (2 cans):

1 - 2:56.889 (warm up)
2 - 2:55.305
3 - 2:42.720
4 - 2:58.006
5 - 2:55.135
6 - 2:53.429

Fastest lap - 2:53.429 (-1.336 seconds)
Average lap - 2:55.319 (-0.508 seconds)
Slowest lap - 2:58.086 (+0.519 seconds)

was that ment to be 2:52.720?

other that that minor thing, 6 beers and GT5 must have been fun

the 6 beers would have made you into a AI driver

do you guys want to laugh, i've been drinking and driving everynight since the game came out.
Being tipsy online with a great bunch of people is just plain awesome.

I need to drink before I drive because I'm very self concious about my driving.

Apologies that should be 2:54.720.

Im liking the sound of a group test though, think it could turn up some cracking results!

I have been doing the same thing. I just can't resist the game or beer. It's pretty tough to gold all the licences but eventually I did it

I think i'll get 24 Cans of Stella for the X1 Challange

I'll either need them to Celebrate getting the Car or get drunk enough not to be able to throw the PS3 System though the Telly in Frustration :dopey:

👍 this is a great idea, I'm dreading that challenge after all I've heard about it :(

Great thread! I have been known to have a few drinks and do some video driving. I know it seriously impairs me. Braking way too late and oversteering are my symptoms. Have you researched this on a a rally course? Totally willing to help on this experiment, but I drink liquor so there will have to have to a slight conversion.

Although it's not politically correct to say so I agree. Furthermore I don't know the particulars of how the B.A.C. thing works but what I do know is everyone is different. I have a friend who gets completely done drinking the same amount that barely gives me a buzz. I can put a six pack down and honestly guys it might as well be water because I feel no different than before and act no different. I can go out and put'em down ,come home, and the wife doesn't even know if I was drinking unless she's all in my face or when we go to sleep because drinking makes me snore something fierce. lol

But what I do know is once I do get to buzz land I can't do any sim racing. I'm no good then.
