The end of Winamp...(updates)

AOL will be on the losing side of this. They are losing customers at an alarming rate (including me).

Hopefully, Winamp will be reincarnated.
 
Well, that is what happens when you let an evil empire like america offline, microsoft, or comcast(ala destroy a great tv network and fill its time slots with nothing but repetive gaming shows that show the same thing over and over with no new content or deviation with something fresh and interesting) acquire something great. They take that great thing and pretty much destroy it.

Bah, I hate companies like that.

foobar for audio, and whatever the hell video program i'm in the mood to use for video. Currently my video app of choice is winamp because I like how it skips around at 5 second intervals if u use the arrow buttons.
 
I guess I won't have to worry about Nullsoft introducting anything new to Winamp that will sway me away from Foobar now. Back in the day Winamp was the media player, but ever since AOL took over its all Foobar2000 now. Well, a lot of people use iTunes for it's pretty looks but I can't stand it's resource hogging ways. It's right up there with Real Player as my most hated piece of software.

Well, my main reason for switching was that it can sort albums (well, it can actually sort by any custom scheme - mine sorts by artist, year, tracknumber so that it displays albums in a chronological order). Besides that, the two main things Foobar has going for it are that it's extremely lightweight (low on the ram usage) and extremely customizable.

Check out the following screenshot. The first is Foobar straight out of the box, the second is the final product of a bit of work. Your Winamp skin with a few bitmaps here and there is nothing in comparison to what can achieved with Foobar.

 
I love Winamp and its shoutcast.com initiative, which is truly awesome. The Winamp 2.83 player was a great lightweight player, but the new winamp 5.0 suits me (and many others) very well also with it's smallbar docking features, opaque options on defocus and so on, and online radio rules through winamp (few players offer all streams to choose from in the playlist). Foobar looks good, but so far it seems to offer stuff I don't really need - I don't care about albums because I listen separate songs nearly always, and the most played, recently added, recently played and streaming media options in the 5.0 Media Library are already more than I need anyway and will last me quite some time.

From reading the story btw I think the Nullsoft team gained more from AOL than vice versa and I doubt who the real victims are here - I think it's AOL. But then again they only have themselves to blame.
 
ok i have foobar now....i got standard though. should i have gotten the special version?

and im messing around with it. it's definitly louder than wmp, but i have to create my own equalizations (again). the Equalizer bars are for different levels though, thats why its a little weird.

im liking it though. no doubt.

The special installer is just the normal installer that comes with a bunch of extra plugins (well, in Foobar they're called components).
 
AOL yet again, showing how suck-tastic they are! :D

I'm probably going to use Winamp for years to come. My shell uses it's structure to add functionality to the desktop (basically a fancy way of saying LiteStep has desktop buttons for Winamp). It supports all needed file formats. It's the most skinned program to date.

I use the 2.95 version, as it supports the most out of the box, and doesn't have all that extra crap that versions 3 and above brought. I got it from Old Version.

Wholly gawd, your foobar look's great! What are you using(components/plugins). 👍

I downloaded plenty of plugins awhile back, but none of them turned out like that.

Yes, emad is right. I'm using Columns UI with my own personal mod of Neksus' Azrael config.

Here's my Columns UI formatting string (along with the buttons). :)

If you wish to change the colours, you can do so under the Globals tab in the Columns UI options. I should note that Foobar reads colours as BGR, instead of RGB. So, say you wanted B9342C, you'd need to change it to 2C34B9.

Lots of different good stuff is available right now, so I'm not too worried.

But this sure freaked me out :

I don't care what anyone says, the last version of Winamp 2 was the best. I think it was 2.92 or something. I've been using Winamp since 1997 before there was a 1.0 release. It's fricken awesome. iTunes doesn't even come close.
