The Formula 1 calendar development threadFormula 1

Port Imperial is off the table.
Las Vegas being put in favor of Monza is moronic but all you have to do is throw money at Bernie and he will entertain the idea.

Actually putting Las Vegas on the schedule and NOT removing COTA will kill both races.

The Italian media is reporting that money is not the issue with Monza - Bernie reportedly has a problem with the proposed changes designed to accomodate WSBK. Apparently he is concerned that they will compromise the circuit. Motorcycle riders always whinge that the downforce generated by Formula One cars adversely affect the surface.

If it's true, it's not without precedent; the circuit copped a lot of criticism for adding a paved run-off area on the outside of the Parabolica, which was designed so motorcycles could race there. It appears that Bernie is concerned that the changes will comprise the character of the circuit and thus its appeal.

Monza is a boring circuit, quite a short race too, why not alternate and lets go to Imola or Mugello every 2 years. I wouldnt miss Monza, Nurburgring or Hockenheim. Id much rather see F1 cars going up Las vegas strip, that would be amazing

I can't imagine Ferrari being happy about that.

Or the other Italian team for that matter ;)

Italy has always had a lot of pull with the WMSC et al, I can't imagine that there won't be lots of behind-the-scenes activity to get a deal finalised. Bernie's just playing hardball because he can, unfortunately.

Las Vegas would be cool from a spectacle point of view...but I can't imagine the track being any good. Completely flat with slow and medium speed, mostly 90' corners. It would be a clone of Valancia,
Singapore, or Sochi, none of which do anything for me.

Hang on, I thought F1 had already worked out that Las Vegas sucked for f1?

There's actually a kind of genius in the madness, though - by running in a car park, they could literally do anything; they're not restricted to existing streets. They completely mangled it by trying to fit as much as possible into the smallest available space, but if a modern circuit cut through a car park or two to include some interesting corners, it could work very well indeed.

You're saying this to sometimes pessimistic F1 fans, who are scared for their lives of flat terrains. Try making a few dicey bits in car parks and everyone's going to scapegoat the crap out of Ecclestone and Tilke.

In all seriousness, though, I said before the 2015 Mexican Grand Prix that they'd butchered Autodromo Hnos. Rodriguez when it turned out that they hadn't. I'm guessing that a new Las Vegas track that went through a few car parks could potentially be a quite nice street circuit.

A F1 race in Las Vegas ain't going to happen for the very reason NJ didn't happen..its all about about the money and with with so many other states under budgetary constraints I highly doubt Nevada taxpayers would be willing to cough up what Bernie wants.

It's a shame too, because if the right people (not 100% government subsidy) could get together and design an interesting and challenging city circuit, then Vegas and F1 would go together like peanut butter and jelly. F1 needs Vegas more than Vegas needs F1 though.

I don't see the Vegas thing to be any more than a negotiating tool. It was also probably supposed to be the replacement for CoTA but they got their money in time so he just held onto that card until it was time to threaten another race.

Seems the A1 Ring may be getting modifications to follow the old layout.

Obviously it's unclear at this stage just how much they are re-adding, or if it would be used for F1.

I don't remember the old layout having a double 90 left/right like that first picture shows.

Indeed, it was a less severe S bend that went the other direction but it looks like they don't have that space any more since of course they need the car park run offs nowadays.

I would guess they're going to follow the rough route of the old track but with updated 'modern' corners so restoration is perhaps not the best word.

None of the famous landmarks around Las Vegas' Strip are going to be closed off for an F1 race. Casino owners aren't stupid...street circuits close off and restrict access to businesses and thus, it would only work if Bernie paid them to hold the race. Las Vegas isn't that desperate for tourists, it has plenty of visitors without needing the costs and hassle of a race through its most prosperous district.

Even if it does happen, expect dull, flat, and featureless circuit composed on a grid of ninety-degree corners, located alongside zero places of importance.
