The Formula 1 calendar development threadFormula 1

It's like Circuit de Gilles Villeneuve with walls around it. I find it incredible that such a track can exist in this era of parking lot Tilke-dromes. Real nice change of pace.

So is it a city street based track? I thought they were going to build it from 0. I was so excited that theres going to be a track 30 mins away from my home and to go on track days sometimes. Uuhh... i knew it was too good to be true.

Yes, it's a city-based street circuit. Or, as we like to call them, street circuits. The organisers are not actually going to build any new roads for the actual circuit (though they may have to re-pave some sections, and they will need to build a pit lane).

But looking at the map and the announcement, weren't you in the least bit curious as to what will happen? I mean, the Greater New York Metropolitain Area is one of the most-developed places on the face of the earth - where would they be able to build a permanent racing facility within view of Manhattan?

Woah, that looks cool. It's not all 90º/180º corners and loong straights (New York from GT4/Forza 3, Circuit Gilles Villeneuve), it has some interesting medium-speed corners.
And yes, turn 13 looks awesome.

Someone had mentioned to me that the Chinese Grand Prix is now in jeopardy due to the government outlawing all entertainment on TV (good luck with that). Has anyone heard about this?

Insane! Looks like something someone could have designed in the 1920s. I approve, but I have a feeling we'll see some pretty nasty accidents here.

I can't help but feel that a chicane will suddenly make its way into the downhill section. Either that, or lots of run off at the bottom. Looks really interesting though.

There are just too many problems associated with grand prix's in countries that historically should have them (the saga with donnington park/silverstone and now these US races). Countries that can offer the money straight off the bat have preference on races. Obviously for the promoter, you would want for the easiest option with guaranteed money (but boring races!), fans would prefer races that give us excitement, as the money in the bank doesn't concern us.

Since the start of the project, it has always been hit by many problems... Now it has happen again, and it hit pretty hard. Still though, the race is not being eliminated yet from the calendar so I still assume that the teams will still go to Austin and the race will goes on.

I don't like seeing a race being dropped from the calendar so I pray the project will stay on. We're not just missing Formula 1, MotoGP and many other race series will lose the circuit too!

The race won't be cancelled. Construction has just stopped while contract issues are ironed out. It will be back to normal within a few weeks at the most. Whenever this project hits a snag, people just assume the worst. It will be ok!

I'd say that stems from the way this is an American Formula 1 project. The last one - USF1 - did not end well (and ironically enough, it was not run by Americans). I believe the timetable for construction of the circuit has been set to finish in June, the original date for the race. But when the race was moved back to November, the construction timetable was not adjusted.

And as Peter Windsor infamously said, America does not shut down for three weeks over the Christmas-New Year break the way Europe does.

The problem though is that before they stopped the construction they said they were just about on schedule.

Thus, if the construction stops it means they will be behind schedule.
But with that said, i really hope it will be finished in time.

If what prisonermonkeys said was true, the schedule calls for them to be done in June, almost 4 months before the race so it's not that big of an issue.

Hopefully they get it worked out, I don't buy anything Bernie says though since he is constantly saying he will drop whatever race it happens to be that week.

True, the question is now then how long the lay-off will be..

I´d say trust Bernie. He will drop races if the money isn´t there.
That is really the only thing he cares about, if you don´t have any money then there will be no race.

Same with Korea. They expressed concerns and he basically said that "oh well it will be sad to lose that GP"

Pardon the double-post (I seem to be doing that a lot this week), but I have an important update: the organisers in Austin doubt the race will go ahead short of a miracle, but are willing to wait until 2013 if it means sorting everything out.

Wouldn't this really hurt the potential for the Austin GP succeeding? I would strongly believe that if the GP of NY occurs first it might grab even more of the headlines.

In all actuality 2013 (or later?) is probably the likely scenario. They've already invested enough that they'll definitely want to follow through with the construction and would obviously hope to have the income from the F1 event to help the situation. But the way I see it, New Jersey is the obvious forerunner for F1 in the US.

I think I changed my mind. See, when was the day Coulthard drove the Red Bull car around the circuit? Ummm... 3 or 4 weeks ago I believe and from what I saw there was nothing at all around the circuit, not even the grandstands and pit buildings If I'm correct.

Currently, the race is expected to run in mid November 2012 which is exactly a year from today but from what we've seen, problems in every 2 or 3 months just can never be good. Even if the circuit is managed to be completed, it will be like Korea's first year...

I still pray, but I doubt the race will go on as it is planned to be.

This local newssite has had good coverage of the situation. Summary so far: http://austin.culturemap.com/newsdetail/11-17-11-13-18-facts-and-fiction/

The scuttlebutt I hear from Austin insiders is that COTA purposely failed to provide the necessary letters of credit due to their falling out with [Tavo] Hellmund [heading the promoter side/company]. It was well known within the organization that this failure would lead to a cancellation of the contract, and it was known that Hellmund could not fund the fee requirements without their help. It appears that they let the cancellation happen so that they could enter into a contract with FOM that did not include Hellmund. I don’t know if this is fact or fiction.
Umm...
