The border was originally a straight line all the way separating British and Dutch territory. The problem arose when the British were chasing head hunters up the river. The river started in the south in British territory, crossed the border into the Dutch area, then crossed back into British area. So rather than the need to ask the Dutch if they could cross every time, it was requested that the border be moved to follow the river. To compensate the Dutch for the loss of territory, the border south of the river is ever so slightly further east than it is above the river.
