I can't even start wrapping my head around this. For one, how do you spend that much without realizing the first thing about what you're buying? For two... HBO just released the new Dune on Oct. 22 2021 (prior to Jan 15, which... maybe is 2022?) having spent $165M on it. Why do they think the copyright would be worth so little?

It's too much money to be that dumb, but also, simultaneously, OBVIOUSLY, nowhere near enough for what they thought. It would be more understandable if they had accidentally spent $1B on the book.
