The Gimp
GNU Image Manipulation Program
And alternative to things that cost money (:

The original and primary version of Gimp is for Unix. However, the developers have realized the potential of the Windows community and thusly have made a Windows Version. Yay! Download an installer from this fella. Since most of us are in to making gifs, both animated and those with transparencies, you'll have to get the gif addon thingy (due to licensing issues). Read around on the sites to find proper info on that.

It's FREE! As in you don't have to worry about going to jail for not paying for downloading it from the Internet (: And it's pretty good. I prefer Photoshop but I get it from work (legally!).

There is also a Mac Gimp for OS X, unfortunately it requires the X-Windows server and I'm sure you Mac guys aren't interested in setting that up. Incase you are, visit MacGimp.org for details.

I guess I could install Gimp on this machine. It might be nice to have.

Yay! I use GIMP! But I definitely wouldn't advocate throwing away your hard earned (or pirated) copies of Photoshop for this free program (even considering the lessened strain on your conscience). Don't get me wrong, it has 99% of the features of photoshop, but it dosen't quite match the ease of use. Most notably, all of the filters are missing. and custom gradients are a pain in the a$$ to make. But if you just want to do simple photochops, cropping etc, and have nothing else...GO FOR IT!!!

They've had a windows version since I can remember. I don't really like the GIMP all that much, but then again I haven't tried it out in almost two years. Meh, I'm probably just spoiled with Photoshop.

Opensource software is nizza rizza. It is opensource, right?

Well I've been using it for over two months, almost every day, 30 chops and countless other little things, and not found a single bug yet :).
