The best race I've seen was not an entire race, but rather a part of one, the battle between Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna at Silverstone, when Abbey Corner was the fast left hand sweep it use to be. Its amazing to see how Prost's williams becomes a little unsettled while going through that corner with Senna's Mclaren right next to him going past, just amazing!!!
I have that battle on my PC, an amazing moment. 👍

For me, Monaco races simply cannot be the best races ever. I find that the track is too slow and sure it has heritage and all of the drivers want to win it more than any other race. But the track is apalling and really strangles the performance of a modern F1 car. And the "battle" for the win in 2004 cannot be compared to say that of the '57 german gp, so button reeled in a 6.5 second lead, Whoa. Fangio reeled in what was it a minute or so? Then once button got close to trulli they just follow each other, how exciting. Monaco for me is the worst track on the calendar along with Hungary, and i tend to fall asleep watching races there.

But thats just my opinion :)

It was by no means the greatest race ever*, just one I happened to enjoy. All the races posted previously in this thread were better, but this one hadn't been mentioned yet, and I felt it ought to be.

'57 German GP was a lot greater than Monaco 04, but everyone was talking about it already, and I felt it had been covered.

I can see what you mean though, about Monaco and Hungrey.

*OK, I just realised the stupidity of posting that in a thread titled "The Greatest ever F1 race" :dunce:

That was a good read actually.

Roo: didnt mean to take a dig at your post, and I can understand where your coming from. I was just taking a dig at monaco, I hate that track

Hey, no worries at all.

What about Nurburgring '68? Driving with a fractured wrist in the pouring rain, Jackie Stewart won by 4 minutes. Brilliant stuff.

You forgot to mention that he was blindfolded and had only one gear...reverse :)

I don't have a favorite F1 race, but I do have a favorite F1 move : Mansell passing Senna at the Hungarian GP, 1989.

Senna was first, Mansell second just behind, and they were about to lap Stefan Johansson on the Onyx Ford, slowed down by gearbox problems.
Senna moved to the right not to hit the Onyx, followed by Mansell who didn't release the gas pedal and passed both Johansson and Senna in the same move.
The vid is here.

Donington '93 and Montreal '95 are my two favorites in "recent" history. For completely different reasons, obviously.

Has me thinking, though... worst F1 races ever?

Any recent race with the Ferraris first and second on the starting grid and ahead all the way long.

Or when they black flagged Schumacher with no clear and obvious reason, I guess it was Silverstone '92

Nice vid flat-out 👍

I havnt seen a good race for ages. :(

Agreed! I've never seen it form that angle before, though.

I saw the 1998 Spanish GP live, and although it was neat to finally see them live and in person, it was a dreadfully boring race.

Absolutely no passes, unless you count Fisichella and Irvine taking each other off the track and nearly fighting. The only pass I saw all day was Schumacher passing Alesi, but even then, he was a lap car anyhow.

I'm wondering what races really did have the least amount of passing, since that's a pretty good indicator of excitement in racing. Having watched almost all of it for 19 years, at least one race a year is an absolutely forgetable snore-fest.

Hungary 2004 was pretty damned boring, I have to say. Then there's Indy 2005, and Austria 2002, which need no comments.

And there are the tragic ones...

As far as worst ever races go, with the exception of 2005, I have to say every single Imola GP since they put the chicanes in is the worst race ever hehe. If I had to pick a specific one, i'd say the 2002 one was the worst of the lot, actually now that I think about it, 2002 was probably one of the worst seasons ever in Formula 1! With the obvious exception of seasons or races where people got injured or killed of coarse.

Any season where one team/driver had absolute dominance has produced a swathe of dull races. Think 1992, 1993, 2002 & 2004. I think that one of the worst races in recent history was Indianapolis 2004, where the stewards punished Montoya for having Barrichello move over on him.

Whilst the Indy 2005 race was duller than a particularly poorly polished spoon, the build-up to it was amongst the most exciting and intriguing hour of television footage of the whole year.

Actually, come to think of it, the poor application of regulations has really ruined quite a lot of races. I'd cite some examples, but the cynical reworking of rule interpretations at Malaysia in 1999 is blocking my consciousness.

It was '03 yes, you're right.

When Barrichello moved across Montoya, in spite of Montoya having the line and the position.
