The Theme LEC #54: Super Indycar
Chosen by: @SouperK from a suggestion by @JarredJackson

Replica designs of modern (2018 onwards) IndyCars, on either of the Super Formula Open Wheelers!

Cars: SF19 or SF23

Body parts/Widebody: N/A

Liveries: Replica

Unique restrictions: None

Bonus picture requirements: 2 photos, at least one shot on an American track.

User made/showcase decals: Allowed

General Rules
  • You are only allowed to enter one livery, you must have made it yourself, and it must not have been entered in a GTS/GT7 LEC before.
  • Chat about the theme is encouraged, but you must follow the entry submission rules below, and please avoid posting other liveries where ever possible.
  • If judgements are needed regarding the suitability of the entry, these will be at the discretion of the member that selected the theme.
  • Standardised entry photos and entry layouts provide a level playing field and the guidelines must be respected.
  • Do not edit your photos.
  • You may be asked to share your livery if shenanigans are suspected.
  • Discussion about the LEC format in general should be taken to this thread: Future of Livery Editor Competitions
  • Blatant disregard for either the rules, or the spirit of the competition may result in your entry being disregarded.
  • The winner gets to nominate the next the theme from the Theme suggestions list, or can nominate a special theme related to a real world event.
Submission Rules
  • Entries should be made in their own post, your entry should contain the elements listed here, no more, no less
  • 1) The opening line should read FINAL ENTRY, and make it Red to help us find them for the poll. (FINAL ENTRY)
  • 2) Two main pictures (Mandatory Pictures), these may not exceed 640 pixels in either direction, but ideally should link to a larger version. See Image Posting below.
  • 3) In spoiler tags (
    ...
) you may include two further Bonus Pictures. These also may not exceed 640 pixels in either direction, and can ideally can link to larger versions.
  • 4) The content of Bonus Pictures might have been specified in the theme, if they have, you must respect the requirements stated - otherwise they can be Scapes, race photos or screencaps from within the livery editor.
  • Nothing else is needed. Explaining your entry is encouraged, but please do so in a second post - this isn't regarded as double-posting by the moderators. Including anything else in your submission post only makes things take longer.
Mandatory Picture Settings
  • Mandatory pictures use pre-defined Scapes.
  • One of your two mandatory pictures must be a front quarter view, the other must be a rear quarter view.
  • Your two mandatory pictures must use either of the following locations (it doesn't matter which location you use for which view), "Pit Lane / Oita - Japan" or "Aomori Museum of Art / Aomori - Japan"
  • How to set up the scene:
Spoiler: READ THIS: How to set up the scene
Image Posting
  • Images must be no bigger than 640 pixels wide or tall, and click through to higher resolution versions.
  • Images should be hosted ideally on GTP, via the Media section. Images hosted by Flickr or similar will also be accepted. Go here for advice on how to do this.
  • Do NOT use the 'Attach Files' function below the reply box when submitting your options.
  • Again, do NOT edit your images. They must be as they were when taken in Scapes/Photomode.
Deadline, on or by: Sunday, 24th August

Good luck everyone!

FINAL ENTRY

This is based on the 2025 Meyer Shank Racing SiriusXM Grateful Dead channel livery, using artwork created by Chris Benchetler for their 60th(!) anniversary. There were 3 slight variations, 1 for the livery announcement and then 2 races. The real liveries are made of vinyl panels where the tie-dye changes abruptly, that wasn't possible the way I made this, so it's an impressionistic replica :)

I was attracted to the livery for it's vibrancy but also because I had an idea for how to make the tie-dye, so this is a bit of an experiment, but ultimately I spent most time making the Grateful Dead decals

Currently contemplating the competitions future, hence the latest LEC is a week late.

To me, there's no doubt that interest in Liveries has dropped off a cliff recently (outside of whatever works on update cars), and personally, I burned out a bit livery and decal work recently (hence my lack of contributions to the SVG request thread etc. recently).

I'm wondering if it's less about being a competition, and more just some kind of inspiration at the moment?

If anyone has strong feelings, please let me know. The upkeep of the LEC isn't massive, but if feels like more of a trudge if turn outs are low, or basically non existent.

I hear you, I'd be sad to see the LEC end, but the drop off cannot be ignored; for right now, it seems a bit pointless to run a poll for 2 liveries, the number of entries for a 'meaningful' LEC is up for debate, but 8 seems like a reasonable minimum to me, 6 at a push? To help that I'd be happy to widen the scope to include a wider range of dates and models, there are other open wheel cars which resemble older Indycars, or any other suggestions.

Changing rules and deadlines, though, could undermine the idea of this being a competition, which pertains to your 2nd point. These are the things I have gotten from both aspects over my time doing the LEC, some points fall in both camps:

Competition
Sadly, I need a deadline to complete things. This was one of the 2 main reasons I started with the LEC
The vote is a good way to get feedback, see your work through other's eyes, the wider public
Competition drives ambition

Inspiration
I've made liveries I'd never have done otherwise, the other main reason I started with the LEC
I learned a lot about liveries, race series and car cultures. I was woefully ignorant of motorsport beyond F1, BTCC and GT liveries
I became more aware of the things that people look for in a livery, in different contexts, and what they don't like. I don't need to act on that but it is good to have the knowledge.

Just my thoughts, but I'll add that I had a feeling I'd probably only manage 1 LEC a month. Whatever you want to do with this LEC (cancel/extend/poll) there'll be no hard feelings here, nothing but respect and gratitude for your contribution to GTPlanet.
