Additionally, you must go to the GT4 screen options and set the mode to 1080i.

And alternatively you can use component cables, a VGA adaptor and a computer monitor for 1080i, with the already stated limitations.

this is the model i have http://store1.yimg.com/I/hdtvtime_1831_534644 paid close to $1950 when i bought it 7 months ago. GT4 looks amazing in 1080i on it. i just recently subscribed to the HDTV channel tier of cable in my area and the HD channels look amazing as well, i found myself watching some show about this guy kayaking down this river (boring, yes) but the picture was so damn beautiful and clear..............

Yes, HDTV in 1080i is gorgeous. If you have Discovery HD Theater, that's the best I've ever seen. American Chopper is so much better in HD.

Back to GT4:

If you have a plasma, LCD, or DLP HDTV, just play it in the 480p mode. It's not worth all the gadgets to alter the signal for your TV. The game doesn't truely run in a higher resolution. It's just a cleaner picture with brighter colors. (There's no crazy lines on the screen either.) The 480p and 1080i modes are nearly indistinguishable. I just run in 1080i "cause I can."

In the subject of computer tuner cards etc., I recommend doing a search on the "ATI HDTV Wonder". It can tune HDTV and analog NTSC on the computer in way better quality then the "ATI TV Wonder Pro" from what reviews say. If it can do that, I don't see a problem with it making a PS2 show good quality picture too.

Caution! This card can display HDTV television programmes, but there is no way to get your Playstation picture into it in HDTV quality.

just to add on
sports is generally shown in 720p (all of espns high def broadcasts, fox nfl, NASCAR, etc.) and it is absolutely AMAZING how vivid it is.

I agree with you, GT4 in 1080i is indistinguishable from 480p, exceptmaybe a little in photo mode.

especially if you have a 4x3 aspect ratio tv, 480p is FINE. With the high def gaming I've done on ps2 and xbox, I expect 480p to be the sweet spot for next generation gaming, with some games (madden) to be best at 720p.

Hello all. I'm loving GT4 and decided to upgrade to an HDTV. Question is, which one? I'm looking at spending about $1200 US max. For those of you who have a working HDTV that switches "on the fly" between resolutions (so you don't have to manually) is what I'd prefer to have as well, and of course 1080i resolution.

If you have this and are enjoying this great game, can you please post the exact model number, where you bought it (again in US), what you paid, and any pro's / con's you see with it? Also it'd be a huge bonus if you can post a high res pic of your set with the game running. I'm looking at a rear projection TV from Walmart for around $1100 (it's like 60"), but I will look at all sizes and types. I just want something that I will be very happy with for all my games and DVDs. Widescreen is a plus as well.

Thanks for any and all help.

I just bought the Sony 30" FD Trinitron WEGA and I'm very happy with it. I originally bought the Philips 30" Widescreen, but had to return it because the screen was miscolored in one of the corners. (My friend also bought the same tv with me at a local best buy, and ended up returning his for the same reason... so def avoid the phillips)

The Sony was $948 when I bought it, looks like it's back up to $999 now at BestBuy. It's 1080i capable, and looks great playing GT4 in 16:9 mode. I'd definitely recommend this TV to anyone looking for a nice widescreen hdtv. It's worth the extra $ when compared to other models it's size. It has a lot more options and screen modes, and looks awesome.

Sounds good Nefilim, but don't count out Panasonic!! My 30" Widescreen HDTV lists for $999 but Walmart had them for $797 and the thing just rocks. I love this TV! Not only is the case itself beautiful, but so is the sound, the picture, etc.

@Hawker: that's a most excellent tv selection. i've had a 34" widescreen panasonic tau for a couple years and have been nothing but impressed with it. i prefer crt for hdtv (but to each his/her own and i've nothing against anyone's preference for lcd or projection etc.) and the tau has an amazing picture. the only drawback is the thing weighs a TON!!!

do most HDTVs have the ability to switch between 480i and 480p (or 1080i) during input from the same component (the PS2, between menu and driving modes)?

I have a Magnavox 51" 16:9 and my HD in does not support 480i and of course my regular composite input doesn't support 480p, am I SOL?

try viewsonic n6, $179 at newegg, will do 480i. 480p 720p and 1080 i and output to vga monitor. Only thing I have found that will work with PS2. And no set up since its a stand alone box with VGA passthrough, also its a tuner, so you can watch TV on any monitor, CRT or LCD.

Here's my set up:

The Sony 30" Widescreen FD Trinitron WEGA HDTV KD-30XS955. Definitely one of the best HDTVs. Bought for $1188.
