Nissan Versa (aka Renault Megane)

Thankyou for drawing this to my attention.

No contest really.

Boo Nissan.

Maybe the design is a bit different, I'm not sure. Either way, I am kinda excited at the possibility of some of the Renault products comming to the US, even if they are French...

I crawled all over this car today and I must say the more I look at it the more I like it in many ways.

Like I've said. The Fit/Jazz/City has a future here in America. It might even be the next cult car since the Civic (in terms of Hondas). I think it has everything to make it fun, functional, and affordable. I don't think you can go wrong unless you think huge SUVs and vans are better. This car is about as functional as they come. I'm likely headed to the Houston Auto Show next weekend, so I wonder if I'll see Honda's little baby in H-Town.

By the way, if the Beat was still around, it would be interesting to see the first affordable mid-engined car available to America since the Toyota MR-S.

Hell if Honda can impress me with something like tha I bet it will do well. For anything that isn't American to impress me takes a lot and like I said I would actually consider driving this thing. Granted it's way to small for me, but I like the car and wouldn't mind taking one for a test drive.

If the Fit makes the dent in the market like it should, how long will it take before every brand has a super-mini available? Sure, the Eco/xA/xB and Aveo were here long before the Fit, but the Honda just seems lightyears ahead of every small car that comes to mind.

...Speaking of Super-minis, did SMART have a booth at Detroit this year? They have been talking about launching the brand in the US for almost four years now, and now that the small car market is having this boom, I wouldnt mind seeing the ForFour or SMART Roadster come to the US.

Nope Smart was not there this year, and if it was I suck at trying to find things since I've walked around the entire show a good 6 times.

Smart are going downhill fast.

They're losing Mercedes loads of cash.
The Smart future is not rosy.

I didnt realise the Fit had so many configurations on the inside:

Normal Mode:
Today you're driving your friends; tomorrow you're hauling who-knows-what. No worries—the Fit has an interior that changes with you.

Tall Mode:
Flip up the Magic Seat™ and experience the wonders of Tall Mode. You'll have four feet of space from floor to ceiling. Perfect for a bike or your favorite ficus tree.

Refresh Mode:
Sometimes it's nice to stretch out and take a load off. Why don't you recline the front seatback flat, climb in the back and take five in Refresh Mode. Long-legged blue aliens love it too.

Utility Mode:
Work is hard, but Fit is easy. Lay the Magic Seat™ flat and load bulky boxes, oblong trinkets or even Sparky. Welcome to Utility Mode.

Long Mode:
Nine-foot surfboards love Long Mode. What else will you put inside?

Pretty cool!

I don't know about Europe but they don't sell in the US at all. In fact I don't even know if they are road legal everywhere.

I love the Atari styled pictures.

... I hate to say it, even after all of the Honda bashing I have done in the last few years... I want a Fit, damnit!

That is pretty impressive. I had no idea the seating configuration was so flexible with this car. Great find. 👍

It is nice but this is in no way a new concept. My dad has the same kind of flexiblity in his Rav4 even though it's not as big. It's irritating when car companies do that.

I'd expect it from a minivan, but not from a Echo competitor. How's it irritating? If Fit was the only car I owned, I'd love the capability of being able to easily load big cargo into your GEO Metro-sized car!

No I'm irritated that any car company advertised like they were the first when they clearly weren't. Yes, say it's features in the car but don't lie about it.

BMI did a feature of it a few years ago. president of spoon had it its enduro racer fit for testing and went over the architecturre and the 'layered 2d' (3d) hydroformed frame. super stiff chassis from a lot of over engineering. and prob using a 5 speed auto to keep the price point down. saw it at la auto show too, nifty lil thing but needs a chop top.

Walking around the NAIAS six times, Blazin? Shoot, I can't even make it to every car at the Houston Auto Show at least once! Well, at least you got a little workout. :)

See? I've always admired Honda. You can hate on them for people spending as much money as a Dodge Viper modding looks and performance. Thing is, they seem to have a nice little innovation or have something for it that most others in their respective classes don't have. With the fit and these configurations I see in YSSMAN's post that it has a lot of configurations to it. It may not be a performance demon, but it is quite functional. This almost reminds me of when I was in a Honda Element at last year's Houston Auto Show. I think someone folded up or took out the seats. Basically, you could LIVE in the Honda Element! You can take away the seats, set up a little bed or sleeping bag, and go to sleep in it.

Back to the Fit/Jazz/City... I think if you wanted to take a Fit/Jazz/Aria into a full-on race car, something like "Long Mode" would work. Just replace the driver's seat with a racing seat, get in a rollcage, take out a few other weight-gaining stuff, get racing tires, and off you go! Want rally racing? Keep both front seats. To me, I just think the Fit/Jazz/City is a hot little car. I think America will embrace it very well. I still think it's like a small van shrunken to a compact. It is an amazing little car.

I think I may be able to stretch my legs with the Fit. I'm 6'0". Chevrolet talked about the Aveo being roomy, and I disagreed when sat in it at the Houston Auto Show. The Fit should be a nice auto to fit as many people as possible. It has such a bright future in the States. It's nicely done, functional... I just don't see this thing getting only one award. This is going to win some awards and the respect of committed buyers. Only thing now to do is wait for it to come out so Honda can make themselves some money.

The interior is big enough for two mountain bikes in "long" mode, but you need to flatten the fronts too if you want to use it for camping. The only true limit to the Fit's utility is the size of the hatch. While the Fit could take a fridge, no problem, it might not fit through the door.

car_mode_utility.jpg

It's not exactly original, but the ULT seat is a first. The reason they can fold so flat is that that hump underneath the front seats is the gas tank. Before anyone objects on safety grounds, I have just two words: Ford Pinto. If you think about it, a mid-mounted gas tank makes much more sense than one close to either end.

ZAP already had a billion dollar deal for the ForTwo or ForFour... they had a plan for legalisation for the Smarts. Was supposed to be money in the bank for DCX, but now they're hedging... as if tey had the will to bring them to the US themselves,.

It's really something when a car like this can impress Honda-haters.

I'd totally sport a Fit....if I could Fit into one. I'll have to check out the honda dealer just for the hell of it. I love how they look when they're aftermarketed-out.

They do look nice with little customization. Cockpit does look tiny. I love everything else about Fit.

... Ive been a Honda-hater for years, but it was because the company really started to wreck cars that really turned their respective markets upside down. The Civic became sloppy and Hyundai even beat it in a few comparos, and the Accord only stays on top because its the goddamned Accord.

The Fit is fresh and new. It reminds me a lot of the MKI and MKII VW Golfs with it's small size and capability. The "Sport" model should be fun to drive around, and hopefully will be fast enough to match my tastes on the road. Cant wait to see if the car goes into SCCA racing!

What I meant with my comment was that the Fit is one of those defining cars. One that manages to change perceptions, and, like YSSMAN says, turn its market upside down. These are cars like the original Civic and Golf... ones that set the benchmark so high that everyone else has to start playing catch up. And some, like the 3-series or the 911, set it so high, that catch-up seems unlikely for many of their competitors.

Honda needs this. They've mutated the Civic beyond all recognition. The Fit is everything the Civic was and should still be. Young, hip, exciting and economical... not another Corolla clone.

I still think the latest Civic and the Fit are fine as is. I don't know if it is a result of people hot-rodding Civics to make them perform better than they do until this model was released or what. When I say that I admire Honda, I mean that in a way that they've done well with more than just cars and motorcycles. On top of that, I'm convinced about many of their autos, whether you love the Civic, the S2000, or even the half-dead NSX, the Tochigi, Japan brand has something for each of their followers.

This is a hot car. If it isn't already, it will be come release. It may not be a tire-smoking mini muscle car. It may not do 11s on the quarter mile. It is a functional automobile that's very active and very... fit. Form and function are the best qualities this car possesses. The latest Civic won the 2006 Motor Trend's Car of the Year honors, as well as the respect of Sport Compact Car magazine. I'd be surprised if the Fit doesn't win at least one award.

So true. While I love the new Civic, it's more like what Accord used to be than the original Civic. They've all grown up........ I guess. :D

Nice to see you around M5.

If I were in the position to buy a new car I think the fit would be a great option. I think the car will be a hit, haven't heard one negative critisism.

I'm considering Fit as well. When oil industry seemed to control the price of oil at will, good fuel economy is very attractive feature. When I'm looking into new cars these days, I'm more interested in cars like Fit and Scions.
