The Phaeton just seemed like a really stupid car in my opinion. I was very dissapointed by 12 cyl only getting ~400 hp. Ask me which car will mash you into the seat. Then I can talk. It is compeditive.

Actually, its acceleration is class-competitive; the W12 goes 0-60 in 5.7secs, better than an Impreza WRX.

But the competition in luxury cars is really which seat feels better. And which car is overall more comfortable.

No it isn't. You're talking to the wrong guy about what a luxury sedan is about - I bought two luxury sedans this week. You clearly have no idea what you're talking about.

You're into the wrong kind of cars if you care about somthing else. The phaeton also costs about 30k more than the wrx. Put 30k into the wrx and THEN compare them.

Why should I know about somthing that I don't care about? I only know about the Phaeton because I saw an article about it in the newspaper. I could have sworn it said 100k but...meh.

I won't accept that the Phaeton is a good car for the price. Poor engineering, mediocre luxury, poor styling don't send me to the bank.

The Subaru Impreza WRX is quick, but look at the inside. Can you even make a comparison to the VW Phaeton?

saw it at the toronto auto show and loved it. Unfortunately, it was behind ropes so I couldn't go up close :(

This is our problem at Volkswagen with the Phaeton - anyone who's ever been around the Phaeton knows that it's got all the luxury of a 7-series or an S-class, Volkswagen-quality engineering, and pretty bland styling for the class. But people like West Side Ninja, who clearly have never even seen a Phaeton let alone been in one, are going to have trouble accepting the fact that a company once at the heart of mediocre products is now building something worthwhile. While the A8 is clearly gaining intense popularity, I think the Phaeton will convert practically zero 7-series and S-class buyers, not that Volkswagen is necessarily trying.

Simply put, the Phaeton is a great car, but it might not be the right car for Volkswagen, even consdering the trendiness of Volkswagens now.
 
So all this time, this has been a fight between Blazin and West Side? If this topic is going to hell in a handbasket, then let me try to save it. When I got into the Lincoln LS at this year's Houston Auto Show, I was rather amazed at how much control the driver has in terms of adjusting the steering wheel position, pedal positions, optional navigation, and so much. I've always seemed to like the Lincoln LS. It is a nice car in my view. But yeah, the topic is called "The Lap of Luxury." Used this as a "creative" title for this thread. Any more luxury car talk?

By the way, someone's signature had information about a car heavier than 4000 lbs and has a top speed of 239 mph. Which one was it, and can you post any pictures?

I thought there was a 6.0l version of the A8??

If I was getting a VW I would get a Jetta or a Passat. Those are nice cars.

In your country, and all of Europe, there's been an A8 6.0 for a few years - even going back to the old shape. But Audi's never brought anything higher than its 4.2L V8 over here for use in the A8 (yet - I'd bet we see the W12 A8 in a year or so).

I think Audi already announced they're shipping it over in early '05.

I think it's a 5-series beater - in fact, though I don't recommend it, I hold the V8 models in high regard: the LS V8 Sport has all the goodies one would want at this price, and I consider it the fifth-best premium sedan on the market, behind the Chrysler 300M Special and Base, Infiniti M45, and Infiniti I35. If it had 20bhp more, it'd be my favorite premium sedan in all likelihood.

BTW, do you want to get rid of that wretched CLK of yours? I've got $500 I'm willing to fork over for it.

I've only had it six months, and I really don't plan on replacing it for another six at least - particularly for $500. It's got no miles on it, and it's got every option except designer leather upholstery - I think I'd let it go for the 2004 dealer invoice price - $65000. So you're 0.77% of the way there.

Hey Sage - you know the new 2005 Subaru Outback and Legacy Turbo are now the most powerful midsize sedans of all time? They're tied with the 2005 Nissan Altima at 250bhp. 2005's not going to be a big model year (because 2006 will be the biggest ever) but three key products are coming out - the third-generation Outback (three generations without a direct competitor - you've got to love it), new Mustang, and new Corvette. It's going to be a tough time picking Car of the Year (and we all know it's going to be tough to follow up the Saturn Vue V6).

Anyway, you're right - we're getting the 6.0L for the 2005 model year, and considering the A8 is new for 2004 I wouldn't be surprised if the 2005 model year isn't still several months off. Interesting - Audi pegs North American A8 W12 sales at just 150 per year, and will start it at $117500. That'll be fun.

Actually, the 2005 Outback base produces 167bhp out of the same old 2.5L - so you're not that ancient.

The upcoming Nissan Frontier. :) Each and every one of the wave of recent Nissan and Infinti products have risen to the top of their class, with the 2002 Altima V6 taking my car of the year honor in 2002 - I haven't seen spec, prices, or heard much on final engines, but given Nissan's recent status I'd bet my life the new Frontier will be a great pickup. I think Nissan is the best brand on the market.
 
People, as an update, I heard that the steering assembly on one of the Maseratis was faulty, so some of them were being recalled. Just an update to my luxury car thread.
