For me there are no more pleasant moments in this game as when I get a close race against the AI.

Last night I bought the NSX'91 Accura and RMed. I did not upgrade the engine nor weight reduction, after RM the tires were Sports Hard so I decided to enter the Expert-Japanese event. To my surprise the race was close and funny like no other, at Tsukuba my last overtake to get the win was in the last lap (out of ten). The AI was aggressive and I passed and was repassed several times. I drive with no aids nor ABS either (this makes me drive more conservative) and it was a clean race, that is, no dangerous or optimistics overtakes from myself.

Of course my car was less powerful and AI tires were Sport Softs, but who cares, the race was something to remember.

My aim now is to get as many close races as I can, it takes time to find a balance but the reward worths the effort, now I see the AI in a different way.

Do you also try to match races against AI and how you do it? It would be nice to read some tips from the GTPlanet community.

Currently I only do a couple of races in a week and i will try make them entertaing. Usually you can notice if your car is too fast or too slow in first corner. It would be good to have some indicator like PD should give recommendation PP for easy, medium and hard difficulty.

PP recommendation for different difficult levels would be a nice touch as long as it was linked to the tire selection, something they drop with last update. Tire factor is even bigger than an engine upgrade at least for short and slow tracks. Tire restriction then for A-Spec is the key point if they add this PP recommendation.

But it is a strange way to use a worse car than the AI to get the AI competable. That´s not how it works in real life and that´s not how it should work in any game.

Think about a shooter, where the AI uses every available gun in the game to get you. But they are so dumb and slow that you need to use a pistole the whole time to give them a chance to survive.

I would love to have a challenge with AI. PD should bring PP system in A-Spec, and the "recommendation" idea with Easy, Medium and Hard sounds like a great idea! This is what I want in the next update.

A-Spec races were fun, but for the most part, the difficulty was not up to snuff. Thankfully, there are exceptions to this rule, such as the Historical Cup with Jaguar XJ220 '66, which even after tuning it, was still challenging and reward-worthy, even if I did get a useless car. This has me excited for Formula Gran Turismo Championship.

Heck no, if I want to challenge myself, I'll do it voluntarily.

That shouldn't be mandatory, of course. It would be nice to give players the choice - see AI's PP and match theirs'. If you don't want to and race in overpowered car, that's fine and the game should accept it. But for some people like me who are looking for challenge would like the PP system.

I do this too OP.
To make up for AI idiocy, I bring a long a car comparably weaker than the AI's.
I won the Nurburgring 4 hours by less than 3 seconds in an M3 :D
I wouldn't have minded losing by 0.001 seconds though.

If you want a nail biting challenge in A-Spec that will test your skills to the max(i use a DS3) then try running the Super GT races with the RE Amemiya Asparadrink RX-7. It's a GT300 class car with only 315 hp after oil change. Don't do any mods except oil change if you want a razor close race. You have to be near perfect on Suzuka(1st race) to beat em. Lots of fun and rewarding especially if you match tires to what they are using.

Don't try to block them so you can stay ahead because that will ruin the fun IMHO. They will eat you alive in the straights but you can even it up in the turns. I've won by 4 seconds once because it seemed like the AI didn't drive as hard. Most of my wins have been by 1 or 2 seconds or less. My losses have been by multiple secs lol. Have a few less than perfect laps and it's hard to recover. Not impossible though. Those laps when you recover and barely win are simply epic.

It is really difficult to get a good race with the ai. It always takes more than 2 or 3 full races to figure out if your car is too fast or not enough fast. Usually there are one or two rabbit cars which run considerably faster pace than the rest of the field which means you need to have faster car to be able to overtake the 14 cars and then catch and pass that single car for the win.

It is nothing more than a challenge of how quickly can you overtake those cars.

I've done lots of single races in the arcade mode on nordschleife against similar cars that gt has chosen and only once or twice have I encountered a car that has been able to run away from me. It has alwasy been a car that should have not been in that race.

It is just pathetic tbh. The ai is just too weak and the way the grids are made by gt makes the races very problematic. The races in gt5 are like if races in f1 were that you had 16 lotuses, 2 saubers, 1 red bull and you in a season old hispania beating them all easily.

Of course with a steering wheel it is a lot easier than with a pad but pd should not just forget the wheel users even if the majority of players are playing gt5 with a pad.

How can I find out what tyres they are using?

Run the race, wait a minute or so.
Then watch a replay of it, select the AI car so you can see their driving view.
You'll see there tyres in the top right hand corner of the screen.

After a patch it's harder to win in overpowered car for a type of race.

Pre-patch i usually started Europen championship for $$$ with ferrari california stock. Easy win easy money (i hate indianapolis :D) 300k i 3 races.

Post-patch today in rome i was going head to head with ...... Esprit V8 obviously heavy modded version with titanium ex.

IT WAS FUN :) And still i got my 300k in three races :)

Thanks. 👍

It should show the tyres before the race, it would be easier and quicker IMO.

No problem.
What do you mean show it before the race? That would make it too convenient for us... :D

In the menus where you see the events, when you select one, and click the button where it'll show a list of AIs with their BHP and weights. Tyres should be shown in there.

You guys aren't playing the game right... oh snap, wait! This is what I do too. :D

Other than overbraking in turns, the A.I. behaves a lot like the bots in other racing games I own, and I have most of the good ones. Finding a car to match the grid, however you go about doing it, is more fun for me than racing online with the tards and frooky physics.

Thank God, there are still a few decent threads to read and respond to. The people here can bellyache all day, or they can do things to enjoy this game, and it looks like the cool kids mostly think alike. ;)

Oh, and I'm behind the curve because I've been wrapped up in a synth programming project for three weeks, but unless they changed things in the new patch, the tire selection for the race are also in the pre-race Option menu.

-Use stock cars, some exhaust or filter if needed
-Depending of your skill put tires 1 or 2 steps below the AI
-Choose hard rides like enzo or yellowbird
-Fun > money. I raced the sunday cup or 90's challenge more times than indy
-Better a close 2nd place than a 30 sec victory

Hey you just bellyached:) I completely agree with you though. Not a fan of the online physics etc. I have much more fun racing A-Spec like this.

Another race I enjoy doing is using a 08 350z/Spirit-R bonestock engine with oil change, Ti exhaust and SS-RS[depending who is on the grid] vs Tuner Car Challenge especially the Grand Valley Race. So much fun. Its lights out for you though if the Amuse GT1 Turbo shows up on the grid. The regular Amuse GT1 you can beat barely but that Turbo one is nasty. Ive lost many times but its fun to almost beat em and when you do beat them its great feeling.

Having been playing GT5 much lately but now after reading some of your ideas I think Im going to fire it up and try out some of your races.

I'm trying to get good, tough matches against AI with Super GT 500.

The best what I could manage to arrange in Arcade Mode was a race against 7 AI Super GT 500 from 2006 to 2008 with a GTR Super GT, set to 493hp, racing hard, stock weight.
The rest was old JGTCs and two PD LM cars.

Still I managed to beat them easily.

If I set the hp lower I have to race against slower cars too, logically and I also loose the Super GT flair completely, with less SGTs as opponents.

Any hint on how to set and choose the right SGT to have a nice, tough Super GT experiance?

I haven't tried this, so I apologize if it's already proven to be a bad idea:

Could you a get a good challenge by using "A-Spec One Make" races from the practice menu, then handicapping yourself with ballast, limiter and tyres as needed?

Your're cheating in favor of the AI. But yes, after the track has been chosen and you're in the final setup menu to set settings and so on, everything you do there won't affect the opponents settings. So you can also try starting a Arcade Mode race with a heavy tuned car, then remove all the tuneing before starting the race and voila, a competitive, realistic race

Funny, i also play the game this way just to make it more fun and interesting, most races i use bone stock cars. If and only IF i change anything it would be the tires, i typically use Sport: Hard if i find the competition is a little tougher than normal.

If the tires don;t do the trick i'll add a sport air filter, or something to make marginally more power, nothing like weight reductions or stuff i can;t take off later on. Usually a sport tire plus sport intake and maybe exhaust would make for fun races and great replays.

+1

It is extremely silly and stupid that I have to downgrade the performance of my car below the AI pilot cars just to have a competitive race! 👎

Hopefully, PD will work on improving the AI to make it competitive in similar performance vehicles. Until then I will read through this thread for some ideas on creating good races against the AI.
