The Midnight Collection

Abarth 595 Millergo

Another Instagram discovery, this time from Millergo CG. He's created a mad Abarth concept and the livery on it is nice and effective, so I decided to transfer that onto the Abarth 595 in the game. It's basic, it's bold, it's bad ass.

I decided to use a couple of the new "After The Rain" locations, and they are absolute stunners. I'm definitely going to get a lot of use out of these and the other scapes in the set! I just need to get my head around the exposure and contrast levels to get these shots popping.

Akrapovic Citroën DS3

Another street car, another supermini, this time inspired by a real-world race car. The inspiration for this is Kimi Raikkonen's Ice One DS 3 Rally Car.

20829290802636532.jpg

I took the layout and colour scheme of the original design and switched the Ice One logos with Akrapovic. The background on the original has a bunch of Ice One watermarks, but i felt like a faded digital camo would give it a more aggressive look. I added a bunch of decals more readily associated with road cars and scattered them around the car, plus gave it some window decals and threw on some French plates to compete the design.

20829489771213075.jpg

Being a car used for snow rallies, it made sense to put the car through its paces on some of the snowy Scapes location, plus Iceland as a nod to the namesake of the original car (sadly we don't have any Scapes in Finland).

Marlboro Porsche Taycan Turbo S

What happens when classic tobacco-branded livery meets modern super-lux EV? I'd like to think something it would be like this!

20970368869793749.jpg

I can't take all the credit for this one - it comes from the extensive drawing board of 811 Design, and it's absolutely bad ass. I modified it slightly by using BBS wheels/decals instead of the Vossen wheels/decals in the concept, and I've created the front and rear of the car the way I think it would work, but otherwise kept things true to the original concept. I used one of the red swatches in the "Traditional" section of the colours, to give an added touch of nostalgia to the overall aesthetic.

BASF BMW M3 E92 (Drift Mode)

The first of my shared liveries on my drift account is this modernised recreation of a classic old BMW, as envisaged by Profiart and pushed further into a drift style by myself.

This one required a bunch of custom-made decals to build the glossy finish over a matte black base. But the end result looks fairly epic, especially at full lock with smoke billowing out of the tail end!

Takata Genesis X Gr.3

An original livery for the Genesis X Gr.3. With the Genesis brand being all new and therefore having no iconic or typical legacy liveries, and classic Hyundai liveries not really suiting the big bold shape of the Genesis X, I decided to invent a new livery using Takata as the principle sponsor and building from there.

20829268127974517.jpg

The livery is built on a forged carbon base in order to bring out a load of forged carbon details, such as the fins on the front fenders, the side skirts, rear wing end plates, etc. A pale grey urban camo pattern sits under black and green sections with the sponsors decals taking pride of place around the prominent areas of the body.

BIC Alpine A220

The Alpine A220 is an awesome little classic race car - lightweight, well-balanced, and pin-point accuracy in the handling department. What better way to reflect that than with a retro style with pin stripes and BIC as a title sponsor?

20829349692377502.jpg

Inspired by the works of Davide Virdis, namely his work on an old Alfa, this livery uses a metallic green base and a series of yellow zig-zag sections colour-matched to the main logo, with white pin stripes to create a bold visual statement. Title sponsors BIC take pride of place front, side and rear, and secondary sponsors Cibie and Michelin are scattered around the remaining panels, and a set of retro gold wheels complete the look.

20829321864952327.jpg
20829171982149798.jpg

The BIC Alpine comes wearing the number 36, but if you want to update it to your own number, why not use the Babas Neue number collection by belfour_dc_02? The link will take you to number "0" but use the arrows to navigate to the other numbers. This font works best to get the aspect ratio and blocky shape to fit on the relevant panels. It also gives a good balance of retro and clean modern style.

Alternatively, you could use the amazing resource compiled by @996rick to find a number font you feel suits better: gt7numbers.com

IMSA GTO Suzuki Cappucino

With the recent addition of the Lightweight K-Cup in the menu books, the Suzuki Cappucino is a brilliant choice to attack and dominate the series and earn yourself a Radical SR3. The alternatives are tricky to handle (Honda S660 and Beat) or dull and dreary (Daihatsu Copen), while the Cappucino is lively and fun to drive around the three circuits in the series when tuned up to max the 400PP limit.

The shape of the Cappucino reminded me of the RX-7, albeit on a much smaller scale, so I thought it might be fun to apply a fairly classic RX-7 livery onto the Suzuki's miniscule body, and it works!

20829536595808608.jpg

Staying true to the original as much as possible, while adding a touch of kei car style, this is the IMSA GTO Suzuki Cappucino. The obvious change is the replacement of "Mazda" with "Suzuki", and the race number switched over to my personal race number (change it to yours for that personal touch!). The car rides on Advan wheels, painted gold to match the original livery, so Advan decals are included and Yokohama to go with them. Elsewhere, a large Suzuki kanji logo covers the roof, and a small ducktail spoiler with the obligatory Suzuki decal gives that low-slung drift-happy style.

4/10/2022 UPDATE: IMSA GTO Suzuki Rotaccino

After the latest game update, the RX-7-inspired livery for the Cappuccino became a whole lot more relevant, so I decided to give it a mini update, with the addition of "RX-7 Rotary Powered" decal under the Suzuki logo on the doors, "Rotary Powered" decal replacing the Suzuki logo on the roof, and discreet "13B Inside" stickers on the rear window. Make sure people know why that little Suzuki is brapping away and screaming past them!

Playboy Corvette IMSA GTDP

Wearing nothing but a few strategically-placed decals, this near-naked American beauty is ready to take on the GTD Pro class in IMSA competition.

20830144398862209.jpg

This was inspired by a concept I spotted on Trading Paints, a Corvette C7R adorned in Playboy Palms decals, ready for IMSA battle. I took the concept and revised it to suit the Corvette Gr.3's body, adjusting the layouts of several areas like the side skirts, rear wing, bonnet and nose area, wing mirrors, etc. It comes wearing my race number, but can be easily changed using the IMSA numbering decals found in the Showcase searches.

Need For Speed Team Schubert BMW Z4 GT3 #77 2011

A replica of the #77 car entered into the 2011 24 Hour of Nuburgring by Need For Speed Team Schubert, driven by Anders Buchardt, John Mayes, Peter Posavac, and Stian Sorlie.

20829870242035874.jpg

Need For Speed Team Schubert entered three BMW Z4's, and this was effectively the #3 car for the team. After posting an 8:45.270 qualifying time, the car was placed 35th on the starting grid - compared to 10th for the #76 car and 15th for the #4 car - and was running well into the race, having completed some 2,385kms before it was involved in a high-speed altercation with a slower SEAT Leon ending in a big impact with the barrier and ending their attempt at completing the race. It was an unlucky race for the team as all three cars registered a DNF (#76 did 61 laps, #77 did 94 laps and #4 did 114 laps).

American Magic "Patriot" Corvette GT3

An imported livery created back in GT Sport days which I thought was a fitting tribute to our American friends - apologies for posting in the forums a day late but I shared it in game late on July 4th! This livery is a tribute to the American Magic campaign for the 36th America's Cup, where they suffered unfortunate results and didn't make the progress they had wanted. Their boat, however, was a stunning sight and I felt it suited the Corvette body perfectly (even if the team had ties with BMW!).

A modernised recreation of a classic Porsche 911 race livery, from the 930 interpreted into a modern style by 811 Design, and revised by me for the 991 body shape. Jagermeister Grunge BMW M4 GT4

Ah, the iconic Jagermeister BMW livery. All that orange and all those Jagermeister logos! I decided that's pretty played out, so why not give it the modernized treatment then destroy it with a grunge style? This is not one for the purists, so if you don't like change or you're easily offended, look away!

20830040679391376.jpg

Starting with the #20 car, I transferred all the major parts of the layout, matched colours and then updated all the logos to the modernised versions as clean text without any stroke elements. From there, logos were either pared back or brightened depending on their emphasis in the original, then hit with all manner of scratches, splotches, splatters and scrapes, to create that grungy, grimy look. The end result is an intense blend of metallic orange and semi-gloss black, white and orange, with that green windscreen banner adding a pop of additional colour into the mix and complementing the DEKRA/ADAC number boards seen on today's DTM cars.

This is brilliant mate, stunning detailing right down to some of the smaller sponsors with the effects on the lettering, very cool!

Ran it in Race B and uh, unfortunately it's not going to get by on its looks though

Thanks! It's a time-consuming but rewarding process! The hardest part is finding the right type of decal to make the effect work, then skewing and shaping it to get it just right.

Shame it's not going to be competitive - is the M4 competitive in any of the dailies these days? It used to hold it's own on some of the Gr.4 dailies back in the day...

It was in a Tokyo Expressway Daily from a while back now. Not a big fn of those tracks to drive but it was one of the more flowing variants and the M4 was such a smooth ride there it made it fun and it can get to a good pace if given the chance to run straight for a while but the speed out of the corners just kills it at Seaside, I was overtaken off the start before turn 1 even.

Hopefully it gets 'balanced' back into contention at some point.

Greggs Subaru WRX BTCC

A fictional livery built on the concept of a BTCC team sponsored by Greggs, running a Subaru WRX with Gr.4 spec level. Built for fellow GTP member @Mercia, this livery uses typical BTCC sponsors for a mish-mash combination that pulls all the right BTCC strings, and carries personalised driver name and number (feel free to change this on your own version if you like!).

The colour scheme uses Subaru WR Blue as the base, with a series of yellow and white colour blocks to reflect the Greggs branding.

After a quick Scapes session in Tokyo, I decided it looked best on track and took it out for a Gr.4 showdown on Suzuka with a bunch of my custom-liveried Gr.4 cars. It looked great against the Morrisons Atenza, Tomica GTR, Orlen 155 TC, and Pioneer Mustang!

Bride Genesis G70 "Digital Slime"

This one's going to be a marmite livery, due to the style and colour choice, plus the fact it's on a marmite car, but I felt the need to do it anyway! I love the way the Genesis G70 drives, and the fact it's incredibly tunable helps too! Having put a lot of miles on my car, I felt it needed a livery with impact, and settled on a design concept by EDC Graphics, originally for a Lexus GS300.

20829911912608994.jpg

Using a digital pixelated style, with a green/black/grey colour combination, I felt it best to refer to this livery as "Digital Slime". The urban JDM/drift style works to make the unique detailing of the G70 disappear into a bold and aggressive livery.

It's a handful and a half to try to drift this thing, especially when fully tuned and putting out well over 800hp. I still need to fine tune it to make it reliable in a sideways manner, but its insane to drive this thing at nearly 400kph on SSRX!!

Polar Porsche 991 GT3 RS

An original livery created for the LEC #6 - Stepping Up!

20829837461493548.jpg
20829160806051711.jpg

The driving force behind this livery is a brand that's close to my heart. As a keen runner, I've been using Polar running watches and heart rate monitors for the better part of a decade, and rely on them for accurate and consistent heart rate information - that's their forte and that's why I use their products!

20829160929584677.jpg

I envisaged a world where Sari Säynäjäkangas, daughter of founder Seppo Säynäjäkangas and current Polar CEO, has started competitively racing Porsches at numerous European circuits, with the backing of a handful of Finnish companies (Kyro Distillery, 9Products, Radio Nova) and typical Porsche equipment suppliers (Akropovic, Ferodo, Mobil 1, Ohlins, etc.). "S. Säynäjäkangas" and the Finnish flag can be seen on the side windows, and the car runs the number "77" to pay homage to the founding date of Polar Electro Oy, a nostalgic link to her late father.

20970615818721206.jpg
20970735643250882.jpg

The livery itself uses a simple three-part colour scheme of Polar's key colours (black, red, white) and places them over a semi-gloss black base layer for some textural contrast. I used an angular design to give the company logo pride of place over the door and rear quarter panel and draw imaginary lines towards focus points where supplier logos are placed. The various stripe sets around the car create an element of segmented contrast and give the illusion of speed even while standing still!

Lowenbrau Porsche 917 Living Legend

I've always loved the 935 series of Porsches, and the Lowenbrau-liveried 935 K4 of Kremer Racing is one of the most visually impressive. The way the gold pin stripes pop from the blue/white combination is iconic and makes such a visual impact while being so subtle, I jut had to recreate it. I've recently been enjoying using the 917 Living Legend, so I decided it was the best car to wear this livery.

20829867463816480.jpg

The livery itself is very simple - a two-tone blue with gold pin striping and white logos and numbers, with the Lowenbrau emblem on the sides and the roof to add some visual interest. We don't have the same geometry to work with using the 917 LL, so I've have to get inventive with the placement of logos, but it mostly resembles the original.

Momo Team Joest 935/85 Homage (917 Living Legend)

Another retro interpretation livery for the 917 Living Legend, this time taking the mighty 935/85 Moby Dick of Team Joest in its Momo / Penthouse livery. I kept this one pretty close to the original, but switched a couple of the decals for modern versions - Bosch, Bilstein and Sachs - and replaced the "Equipe Europe" decal for a "Porsche Design" decal. One slight difference is using the full FILA decal on the windscreen, whereas the original uses a pattern of the "F" only.

Using the same colours, layout concept, and sponsor logos, the 4C completes the team. Thanks to it's unique, curvaceous shapes, it presented some interesting challenges to overcome. The placement of the main "Alfa Romeo" text on either side was complicated by the big air intakes and the pronounced curves over the top of the three quarter panel. Further complicating the style is the front grille wrapping over the bonnet to the front lip - a tricky detail to get right, but in the end it makes a beautiful combination.

To finish the livery off, I've given it a taste of the Fanatec GTWC, with applicable number boards, running the number 77 - just try keep it out of the sand at Spa!

Conveniently, the latest game update (1.20) has solved many of the MR handling issues which were present up to this point, and the 4C is actually a competitive option in Sport Mode again.

Compaq McLaren 650S GT3

My entry for LEC #08 "Dead Brand Rising".

20829630157669107.jpg

I stumbled a while to work out a suitable dead brand to sponsor this fictional livery, but I came across an article which made me laugh, and I had to make a tongue-in-cheek tribute livery as a result. The premise of the article is, the almighty legend that is the McLaren F1 is completely reliant on a single model of computer manufactured by Compaq in the early 90's and no other computer has ever had the same card drive. Thus, the super expensive McLaren F1 is crippled without this now super rare and antiquated piece of old tech!

Disclaimer: this article was written in 2016 and in 2017 there was finally a workaround created!

And so my Compaq McLaren 650S GT3 was born (mainly because I havent got the F1 yet..) and I decided to make it a fictional entry to the GTWC Europe.

Porsche 962-004 '85 Ickx/Mass

When LEC #7 "Colour Crimes" was announced, I knew it was the perfect opportunity to recreate an original, and then follow it up by destroying the original livery. I'll get to that second part in the next post, but for now, here's the original 1985 Porsche 962 C, as driven by legends Jacky Ickx and Jochen Mass in the Spa 1000km. I've tried to keep the livery as close to perfect for that specific race, but in those days the sponsors used to move around the car a lot - almost race-to-race at times - so it's as close as I can get without being 100% sure it's exact.

On September 1st, 1985, the Porsche Works Team entered two Rothmans-liveried Porsche 962 C's, both in the C1 group. The #1 car here was driven by Jacky Ickx and Jochen Mass, and the #2 car was driven by Derek Bell and Hans-Joachim Stuck. In Qualifying, both of the Rothmans Porsche 962's qualified behind a Martini Lancia LC2/85, the #2 car placing 2nd on the grid, while Ickx and Mass were almost 1 second off the pace and started 6th on the grid - one place behind the eventual winner.

After 77 laps, Jacky Ickx was behind the wheel and battling defending Drivers Champion Stefan Bellof in the Brun Motorsport Porsche 956 for the lead of the race, when the two cars came together at the bottom of Eau Rouge and both spun out into the barriers to the left of the track. Tragically, the Porsche 956 went straight into the barrier and through to a secondary wall, and caught fire. Bellof was killed, either by the initial impact or the fire which engulfed the car. Either way, the tragedy claimed another legend of motorsport.

When the race resumed (shortened out of respect to Bellof) the #2 car managed to fight back from further afield and finish 2nd, 2:14 behind the winning Martini Lancia LC2 of Baldi, Wollek and Patrese. The #1 car had earlier posted the fastest lap of the race (2:10.73).
