The Offroader: Toyota FJ Cruiser. Bang for your buck. Bases at $22,100. 239 HP. 278 ft lbs torque. MPG in the high teens and low 20's. Full loaded it hits near $30,000.

IMO The FJ sucks big time. I sat in one at the auto show, there is about the same amount of space as a jeep wrangler has. Id just opt for the wrangler because its the same or cheaper cost and can do way better offroad than an FJ. Just my thought

Weekender: Chevrolet Corvette Z06. Costs 1/3 of a Ferrari and can out perform it. You can get it serviced at the local neighborhood dealer. It will run reliably and run fast. Drive it to the track, race it for a day, drive it back. You cant get much better than that.

What Corvette are we talking about here? Because a Z06 runs about...$30,000 ahead of his budget.

Not even the "basic" Corvette can ring it at that price. The base model starts at a titch over $44K, the good ol' Z51 starting for a little more than a thousand more.

There aren't many V8 sports cars available for the $40K price limit. Of note ceratinly is the Mustang GT (about $28K fully-loaded), however the best example in the form of the Pontiac GTO has recently passed. Those could have been easily had for a little over $30K, and considering how well they performed, would have been a great performance option in the long run, especially with the extremely useable interior and cargo space.
