I wonder how our USDM STi will look - if it comes to the states.

Regular 2006 Impreza (with STi rear spoiler, it's optional)

I for one don't mind the styling one bit, except wtf at the extra roof spoiler.
Thats a little trick for getting more downforce to the rear. Much like the Evo MR with its "Vortex Generators" in the same spot, these things just keep the air moving to where its most useful, the rear wing. It was first seen on a street car, as far as I know, on the original BMW 3.0 CSL back in '73. Its a bit different looking, but works quite well. And cars like this, as was the case with the CSL, the performance is objective #1, then you worry about cosmetics. I like it.

Believe it or not, my opinions are kind of changing on the forthcoming offer from Subaru. Not real fond of the B9 Tribeca, but the new Impreza deal is starting to wear on me a bit. I see the aggressive overfender like with the R34 Skyline. The lights do look pretty nice. And let's not forget that means-business. Or at least, I believe the hood scoop was functional from the previous Impreza STi. It isn't like this Impreza has a 351 Windsor or anything.

I've imagined if this car looked more like an Alfa Romeo than... a Subaru. Even though the new designer has that Alfa Romeo design at the front, If it were an Alfa Romeo, first of all, those two gril pieces on the side wouldn't even exist, then that center piece of the grill would be horizontally-wide and vertically-wide. I don't know. I'm kind of thinking about if the Alfa Romeo designer made this car more like an Alfa than a Subaru. I know that it's design could have been much worse. Of course if you don't like its looks, better hope groups like APC, Kaminari, and the least favorite of many car fans- Veilside, come up with better front designs for the next Subaru Impreza.

John: Have you seen the B9 on streets? I've seen only one so far, but looked so much better in real life.

I think it looks good. the only thing is that I think the grille struts should just be by themselves. curving them into the center's shape-outline makes it look pretty tacky, but if they can improve/innovate on the design, it'll look mean.

I seen a B9 Tribeca at this year's Houston Auto Show. The front looks kind of scream Cayenne, just not as insanely powerful.

Someone did a photoshop/photochop of if that center piece wasn't there, and actually, it looks a bit plain. It kind of would have been better looking if it had that aggressive grill design like with the R34 Skyline. Since the trapezoidal design at the front is like this: /___\, it kind of would look better if that trapezoidal piece with the Subaru logo was like this instead: \___/. I'd probably do away with the rest of the grill and just make that center piece horizontally wide. In addition, I'd make the headlights a little wider so that the design doesn't get messed up.

The rear, on the other hand, looks pretty clean and polished. I don't really know about the extra spoiler on the roof, but I'd probably remove it. That is, unless that extra spoiler is to aid in aerodynamics. A WRC version of this latest Impreza wouldn't look too bad. Just maybe picture the Impreza in this thread as a WRC race car, tearing up Monte Carlo, Argentina, the Acropolis Rally, the Japanese rally, catching air in Finland, or whatever your favorite FIA World Rally course is.

The design is growing on me, much like how the looks of the Chevrolet Cobalt kind of grown on me until I thought the Cobalt wasn't that bad in looks. That new Impreza's design is growing on me. I'll probably still prefer the 2003-type Impreza, though. The new Impreza's lines are soft, while mean. I wouldn't call it the most beautiful modern Japanese creation, though. I save that for the Nissan S15 Silvia and its variations (especially the Spec-R Aero).

Are you kidding? I almost swerved into a parked car the first time I saw a couple of them sitting on the Sube dealer's lot. I hadn't seen or heard anything about the car beforehand; it was just a lumpy surprise sitting there on my drive home. I was so dumbfounded at how hideous they were that I couldn't believe they'd ever made it off the concept-car boards.

 I'm starting to see them on the streets now. I don't think they look any worse than some of the GM or Toyota SUVs(strictly my opinion here), and it seems to be selling OK.

So it went down 20 HP? I'm not a fan of the new image Subaru's doing, but I'll still buy that car. Can't wait to see it in Vision GT. Hopefully I'll see you guys if free roam is on. (My idea in another thread about we're all in online mode.)

No, its rated at 280hp, just like it always has been in Japan. That is the JDM STi, not the USDM version. That one has the 2.0L engine, we have the 2.5L here in the States. The USDM 2.5L version is the one that had 300hp officially. Most people agree that the Evo and STi are over 300hp in Japan anyway, but they always just list power at 280hp (276ps) to stick to the "agreement".

I love the new look, it's a major evolution from what we've seen before but I realy do like it. It looks a bit European though, have Subaru been kidnapping French/Italian designers?

I wonder what Prodrive will make out of it.

It looks like a Saab in that picture. Which is a good thing IMO.

I'm surprised to hear that Subaru is still rating the engine at 280hp. I thought that they had dropped the gentleman's agreement - considering i've been hearing rumors about the next-gen skyline having way over 280hp. I even thought that the Lancer Evo IX was going to be over 280hp for the non-MR FQ-3xx versions (UK only I guess). What do you think - is the JDM spec STI actually 280hp as stated, or 280hp 'claimed' just to front the Gentleman's Agreement?

It's easily putting over 280hp. They are just claiming that to please the "agreement".

It's a known fact that Toyota Supra and Nissan Skyline GTR pushes out at around 300hp.

The next GTR will be the first car to officially break the "agreement".

Nay. The new Honda Legend (Acura RL) officially has 300PS already. So, not sure if there are any others, but its already been broken.

It's cool. I don't think there are any others yet, but that one is for sure. So, the dam has officially broken. I'm sure many will follow.

they look more like cool headlights chopped in half....which, in turn, makes them absolutely hideous.

You do know thats a new Jetta in that pic, right??? Thats not the back end of the new WRX.

**EDIT** You also do realize that other pic you posted is of a Legacy, right??? I mean, it says right on the front plate. Not sure what you are talking about with those pics, but neither is the new Impreza.

I suggest you re-read his post.

Man, we were lucky... THAT could have been the new rear side.... He meant the rear tailights

subaru-wrx-06-sti-2.JPG

Now the headlight of the Legacy looks like the rear tailights of that picture. And the Jetta rear tailights look like that picture as well.

He just meant that tailights look good on both the front of the Legacy (headlights) and the rear of the Jetta (tailights).

I believe that's what he meant.
