Hi, GTPlanet.

I have no idea on how the next Supra is going to look, but if I can trace history correctly, the Supra's design was based on the beautiful Toyota 2000GT. First the Celica came around maybe 1971, and that car would give birth to a brand new sports machine, the Supra. And over time, the Supra would evolve into the hot car that it is today. If I am wrong about this, PLEASE correct me. But as I know, I haven't heard much about the new Supra except it will probably be less expensive and less exotic. When I played "The Need for Speed SE" on my PC, I got to know the Supra, shod with its huge rear spoiler as it came in a color I'll welcomly accept- red. But I haven't heard much else about the Supra. So I decided I'd open this thread to people to discuss how the next Supra MIGHT look. We know the new Mustang, we know the new F-150, we know the new Corvette, but outside the States, how about the new Supra? As the creator of this thread, and as being a voice of opinion, I'll start.

I think if Toyota wanted to follow the American way of visualizing concepts, they would look back to the past. I think that the car may still look like the 2000GT in terms of side styling. The 2000GT, if you know me, was what I described as a princess. It is a damsel in distress. The only way to rescue her is to take a drive in this beautiful machine. I'll tell you one thing. If the styling of the Datsun 240Z mean anything to the styling of the 2000GT, the next-gen Supra would bring a real sportscar back to Toyota. Since the Supra's abscence, Toyota is in need of a pure sportscar since the Celica was downgraded to about 180-something horses. Now, you thought I was going to say that it was downgraded to a "rice rocket," but I'm not going that way on this one. Anyhow, the Mark 4 (or commonly known as the MKIV), was a pretty nice car. The JGTC Supras still are possibly the most agile machines on the circuit. Their styling is unmatched and lovely. I still hope that the Supra could have been made lighter for when they attempted Le Mans. I'd ENJOY a Supra vs. Corvette battle in GT/Sportscar racing. So if it went to the 2000GT for advice, I think if they look at what the Nissan 350Z did with its styling cues from the 240Z and try something for the Supra based on the 2000GT, it would be pretty interesting to see what Toyota would come up with. And maybe for America, we may get a TRD-tuned Supra that will (and you won't believe this) boost horsepower from 276 to 315 or even 329.

However, if the next Supra borrows cues from the Celica, while staying with the 2000GT bodystyle, maybe I'd like a car with Mazda RX-8 styling on the sides. The RX-8 is kind of like a fastback. I once thought it was a 5-door car when I first seen it (imagine a 5 door SPORTS CAR!). The latest Celica has triangular-style light designs with a little opening to allow air into the engine. Personally, I think the Celica is one of the raciest-looking cars on the road today. It's even raced in the Toyota Pro Celebrity Race this past weekend. I certainly think this car is more of a high-horsepowered tuner car rather than an economy/sports car. I still think it could have gotten more HPs. I'd say at least 210 or 240. There are some FF cars that have good HP numbers, although I don't think (other than FF rally cars), no street car ever had big HP numbers like the Skyline or even (Japan's) NSX. But back to the Supra. I'd say that if the new model was based on the Supra, it would have to look like an upgraded Celica. If it wanted cheap looks, here's what I would do. Give the Celica a widebody kit, beefy tires, a turbocharged engine with little or better capabilties than the MKIV's motor, a functional rear GT wing, enhanced muffler for sweet sound, and just make it look and perform meaner than the last Supra, boom! New Supra. I think there is not a car in Toyota's lineup today that can match the Celica. The Celica is basically the best offering other than the Supra. Nissan is leading, and Toyota/Nissan is still quite a rivalry. So why not challenge the firm once known as Datsun?

What do you think the next Supra should be? Mazda succeeded with the low-priced (in terms of sportscars) RX-8. Nissan succeeded with its 350Z. So what can Toyota do?

Well, personally I'd prefer an MR-S over a Celica, I dunno that I'd call the Celica Toyota's best offering.

Anyway, next Supra... well, I was never a huge fan of the Supras, other than the styling before the MKIV cars, so I'd say something like a 2500lb coupe, 6 speed rear, rear wheel drive, turbo four cylinder for something like 300hp. That's not really Supraish though, so far they've seem to gone heavy with big engines.

Well, except for in the JGTC, they use four cylinders right? I only know because of the GT3 intro video :p

the JGTC Supras are currently using the 5.2-liter naturally aspirated V8 which I think is a bored 4.7 1u-zfe.

Really?

I thought they were using the turbocharged inline-four 3s-gte? I know that it is the same engine that is in the SW20 MR2.

Do you trust spy shots? Check out what this site says about the next Supra:

http://www.autothing.com/funthings/SpyShots/funthings-spyshot2005ToyotaSupra.htm

This site happens to agree with one of my claims about the newest Supra, slated for 2006. I said that the car would be a direct contender to the 350Z, and the site agreed with my claim. The top picture is kind of ugly, but the screenshots from the "Click to Enlarge" picture shows something that highly represents the Supra. The tail lights are COMPLETELY identical, the bodystyle kind of remains the same, I don't agree with the lights and the grill, even though it is based on the 2000GT. Maybe a Supra with a fastback look would have really looked like a modern 2000GT. It's too bad the Japanese car pictures are in a dark color. It is a little hard to make out what the grill will look like, much less imagine what the rest of the car looks like. For the most part, I think the Japanese photo shows a more muscular (I don't know if you'd say that) Supra. Surely, I think it will still be quite an eye-catcher. 350Z riders may have to look in their rear-view mirrors when this little baby comes out. I think some REAL headlights would be nice. I think the basic headlights from the MKIV, or a rotation of the current Celica's lights will do. In a way, that would make the headlights look more like a Ford Focus.

And I DO NOT want retractable lights! This is the 21st century, have them out all the time! Oh, and by the way... the car may not come with a turbo engine. Cancelling out a turbo engine will drop prices to around the $30,000 mark. With a turbo and more revisions, the car would have been $40,000, or even $50,000. This is for the States, but I wouldn't be surprised if Japan comes up with a turbo Supra made for Japan only, or for the brave American importers.

Wow, that link is incredible!

I like the way the doors and fenders flow overall, but I agree with you that the headlights and the grill. I think that if they can take the MKIV headlights and give those headlights an edge (while keeping the muscular image) and blend it in with the front bumper, then it may look good.

The front end view looks really weird. It looks really similar to the 2000GT for sure, but I do not think that the Supra has to give off a boxy image in the front. If they can curve the top corners (right underneath the side mirrors), then it will look good :)

For some reason, now that I look at the picture again, the side reminds me of a TVR.

But oh, wait. There's a site I recently checked out. No, I'm not done yet. Check out this one, based on Japanese drawings and weird concepts. And it also features a Supercar concept. Yeah, you heard me. A Toyota Supercar concept.

Cheers! As you English folk might say...

Yeah, the Alessandro Volta will be a SWEET supercar. And I don't think the fact it is a hybrid sportscar doesn't mean that it will shy away sports car enthusiasts. I'd like to see this machine be produced. It would be incredible. No word on handling characteristic, though. This hybrid bad boy is told to have 408hps and go from 0 to 100 (km) in 4 seconds and change. Yes, folks. The Toyota A.V. is for real. The hybrid thing just means that you may not have to pay gas guzzler tax. I think Toyota may have bested over Honda in terms of innovation. But good one, Toyota. Just hope your rivals Nissan don't come up with something out of the ordinary.

The second website I displayed had an interpretation of what the next Celica could look like, and if all holds well, the Celica will still be a racy-looking machine. Add a nice GT wing for looks, it can be run in the next Toyota Pro Celebrity Race.

But back to the Supra. There are two things. First, you may think I'm nuts, but from the Supra pictures with the Japanese lettering, the sides of the car kind of has styling like (of all cars), like the Dodge Viper GTS of the 90s. Some of the other models were so un-Supra. I've always thought of the Supra as a tough-as-nails Japanese sportscar. Maybe some of the ones that look like Ferraris can be used for the next mid-engined Toyotas. A BIG supporting example for this is the yellow machine under the headline "Toyota 4000GT...5000GT" on the toyotacelicaonline.com page I posted. But nonetheless, I don't think a lot of people made any real buzz about the next Supra. So that's why I don't know about it too well. I think if Toyota wants to strike gold with the Supra, they'll have to make it affordable. If the RX-8 is becoming more of an affordable sportscar with great performance, so can the Supra. Or do you make the Supra almost as exotic as the Honda S2000? A quick way to make it 2000 Exotic is to bring out a twin-turbo for it. Other than that, I don't think that the headlights have to stay, but they have to be big and clear headlights. The taillights are alright. I wonder if it will come with a rear spoiler for looks (or did it actually HELP downforce for the MKIV Supra)? I seriously believe that if they stay with the 2000GT and make it more modern and stylish, it will be as successful of a bringback as Ford with their 2005 Mustang. I'm pulling for Toyota to stay with the DESIGN of the 2000GT, but incorporate elements from the MKIV. I especially feel the headlights and taillights are unmistakable when you're talking Japanese sportscars. I think this car might do very well. It may not win Engine of the Year honors like the RX-8, but it might win the hearts of Japanese car fans and tuners alike. I'm not saying that it could happen, but I think that Toyota will probably develop a twin-turbo for the Supra and make it a better performing machine than the NA engine. But don't think you'll head into your Toyota dealer for it when the 2005 Supra comes out. Instead, you may have to let Toyota try to rethink the car and consider how to drop in a twin-turbo and then give the car a way to cool the darned motor down. I just don't to see a Supra that looks like a newer-model Chevy Cavalier at the front.

By the time the new Supra is introduced to the world, Toyota fans will have to pay respect to the Toyota 2000GT for the inspiration for the car. And maybe more people can grow to love this kind of little-known car.

If you visit the link that shows the Toyota supercar, you can download the PDF that comes with it. The PDF file tells you more about the supercar. And it's going to be four-wheel drive. And as I said before, this car is for real.

And with a Supra, I just CANNOT imagine a Supra with a boxy front or one that looks like the headlights and grill of a late-model Chevy Cavalier. I think Toyota will strike gold with their most pure, commercially available sportscar, the Supra.

i was never into supras but it think it does look a bit better than the previous generation. Me, im waiting and hoping for the 4th generation RX7

Maybe you can come up with a thread based on the next RX-7. I'm not trying to be mean, but just that I never heard of a newer RX-7. I thought the RX-8 was going to replace the RX-7 or something. Just wating to see what Toyota will come up with for one of Japan's hottest cars (other than the RX-7 and Skyline), the Supra.
