Hi, GTPlanet.
I have no idea on how the next Supra is going to look, but if I can trace history correctly, the Supra's design was based on the beautiful Toyota 2000GT. First the Celica came around maybe 1971, and that car would give birth to a brand new sports machine, the Supra. And over time, the Supra would evolve into the hot car that it is today. If I am wrong about this, PLEASE correct me. But as I know, I haven't heard much about the new Supra except it will probably be less expensive and less exotic. When I played "The Need for Speed SE" on my PC, I got to know the Supra, shod with its huge rear spoiler as it came in a color I'll welcomly accept- red. But I haven't heard much else about the Supra. So I decided I'd open this thread to people to discuss how the next Supra MIGHT look. We know the new Mustang, we know the new F-150, we know the new Corvette, but outside the States, how about the new Supra? As the creator of this thread, and as being a voice of opinion, I'll start.
I think if Toyota wanted to follow the American way of visualizing concepts, they would look back to the past. I think that the car may still look like the 2000GT in terms of side styling. The 2000GT, if you know me, was what I described as a princess. It is a damsel in distress. The only way to rescue her is to take a drive in this beautiful machine. I'll tell you one thing. If the styling of the Datsun 240Z mean anything to the styling of the 2000GT, the next-gen Supra would bring a real sportscar back to Toyota. Since the Supra's abscence, Toyota is in need of a pure sportscar since the Celica was downgraded to about 180-something horses. Now, you thought I was going to say that it was downgraded to a "rice rocket," but I'm not going that way on this one. Anyhow, the Mark 4 (or commonly known as the MKIV), was a pretty nice car. The JGTC Supras still are possibly the most agile machines on the circuit. Their styling is unmatched and lovely. I still hope that the Supra could have been made lighter for when they attempted Le Mans. I'd ENJOY a Supra vs. Corvette battle in GT/Sportscar racing. So if it went to the 2000GT for advice, I think if they look at what the Nissan 350Z did with its styling cues from the 240Z and try something for the Supra based on the 2000GT, it would be pretty interesting to see what Toyota would come up with. And maybe for America, we may get a TRD-tuned Supra that will (and you won't believe this) boost horsepower from 276 to 315 or even 329.
However, if the next Supra borrows cues from the Celica, while staying with the 2000GT bodystyle, maybe I'd like a car with Mazda RX-8 styling on the sides. The RX-8 is kind of like a fastback. I once thought it was a 5-door car when I first seen it (imagine a 5 door SPORTS CAR!). The latest Celica has triangular-style light designs with a little opening to allow air into the engine. Personally, I think the Celica is one of the raciest-looking cars on the road today. It's even raced in the Toyota Pro Celebrity Race this past weekend. I certainly think this car is more of a high-horsepowered tuner car rather than an economy/sports car. I still think it could have gotten more HPs. I'd say at least 210 or 240. There are some FF cars that have good HP numbers, although I don't think (other than FF rally cars), no street car ever had big HP numbers like the Skyline or even (Japan's) NSX. But back to the Supra. I'd say that if the new model was based on the Supra, it would have to look like an upgraded Celica. If it wanted cheap looks, here's what I would do. Give the Celica a widebody kit, beefy tires, a turbocharged engine with little or better capabilties than the MKIV's motor, a functional rear GT wing, enhanced muffler for sweet sound, and just make it look and perform meaner than the last Supra, boom! New Supra. I think there is not a car in Toyota's lineup today that can match the Celica. The Celica is basically the best offering other than the Supra. Nissan is leading, and Toyota/Nissan is still quite a rivalry. So why not challenge the firm once known as Datsun?
What do you think the next Supra should be? Mazda succeeded with the low-priced (in terms of sportscars) RX-8. Nissan succeeded with its 350Z. So what can Toyota do?
