What about the crash involving the Mercedes CLK-GTR at Le Mans back in 1996? Anyone remember that? Talk about insane...220 MPH lift off, 2.5 flips, about 25-35 feet above the circuit, ended up off track and hitting a tree before coming to a rest in a clearing about 70 feet to the side of the circuit. OUCH :ouch:

I think everyone remembers that one.

I remember a former F1 driver, Michele Alboreto or soemthing like that, was simply test driving an Audi R8 a few years ago at Le Mans, crashed, and landed on the other side of the wall. I think he died

That Mercedes accident i think was in 1999 or 2000, and it was the Mercedes CLR not the CLK-GTR. I think the team had to quit because more than one of their cars flipped. Someone please correct me I really dont know the exact details.

If i remember correctly 3 Mercedes CLRs flipped in the same way in 1999. The first two were in practice or qualifying (can't remember), the 3rd was during the race. You'd think they'd realise something was seriously wrong after the 2nd time....

Once in qualifying, with Mark Webber driving. Once in the warmup session, again with Webber driving. Then again in the race, Peter Dumbreck made it a triple.

After the third one, Mercedes withdrew the remaining car from the race immediately.

That wasn't at Le Mans. Alboreto died at the Lausitzring in Germany.

Same track Zanardi lost his legs.

Death at Nurburgring:
Yesterday Jørund had a heavy accident between Pflanzgarten and Schwalbenschwanz and today he passed away due to his head injuries. The crash was probably due to oil on the tarmac, as a second biker crashed too, but only suffered minor injuries.

while a year later the up and coming British driver Peter Collins crashed to death.

It was up at the righthander before the descent that Onofre Marimon flew off the track during practice for the 1954 GP, crashing to his death below.

Lauda's rescuers:
Despite a three-year program in the early 1970s to erect barriers and create run-off areas there were still safety problems and in 1976 Niki Lauda proposed to the drivers that the circuit be boycotted. The other drivers voted against Lauda and the race went ahead on August 1 that year. Lauda crashed and was badly burned, being saved by the combined actions of fellow drivers Arturo Merzario, Guy Edwards, Brett Lunger and Harald Ertl rather than by the ill-equipped fire marshals. At the end of that year the governing body of the sport - then called the CSI - withdrew the Nurburgring's F1 license.

this is kind of off topic but i have a few Nurburgring questions. What is the road leading up to the track at what it seems to be right after KM 10 if it was on there. You go over a small bridge and then you see the road. there is a building of some sort there. i thought this was the entrance. I dont know much about this track but untill recently. ive been reading about it and i cant get enough of it. I used to hate it but now that i know more about it, i love taking a car with good power and handling out to just drive on there. Also right after the pit entrance there is a turn, but you can also go straight and it seems like there is another track over there that you cant get to. ive checked it out on the game and there is a big BMW logo. Any of you all know what this stuff is? if you dont know what im talking about let me know and ill describe it better. Thanks

That really put a dent in Mark's career, but now he is back on his feet and doing very well.

yep, i think if it wasnt for that he may have been driving for the mclaren f1 team a few years ago, although then again it would be hard to pick him over montoya & raikonnen 2 or 3 years back, but that is potentally where he could have been i believe

I don't know the name of that road, but the bridge is called "Adenau Bridge" (the corner name is Breidscheid, just before the 10km mark. It's not the entrance to the track, the public entrance is just before Antoniusbuche (the kink in Dottinger Hohe, the long straight) near the end of the lap.

The track you see there is the current GP circuit (the one that today's F1 cars run on). The two tracks can be run as one, with cars exiting the GP circuit's Coca-Cola Kurve to begin the lap on the Nordschleife.

The turn after the pit entrance is the new Nurburgring F1 circuit.
