Is anyone here a fan of the old Playstation? I mean the first one that came out! I know I am!:)

Fan of the games like Crash Bandicoot, Demolition Derby and the original Rayman. They were the first 3 games I played on it.

Ah the memories.

I STILL HAVE those games! Memories, indeed... (in-game announcer) "Watch those barriers! They'll only slow you down!"

I think everyone who is a registered user here at GTP is a fan of the original Playstation. We wouldn't have the video game industry we have today if it wasn't for Sony and the Playstation.

Everyone came from this:

Know your roots.

I remember carrying my PS1 around on like every holiday we went, it was so small and useable. I loved it, until the more bulkier PS2 came out that is. I remember playing my first game, GT2 on it at my cousins house, I enjoyed it so much. That was what got me into gaming.

Uhhh why? I think Nintendo had a lot more to do with the rise of video games then Sony did, hell Sega probably even had more to do with it. In modern times yes, Sony has done quite a bit with the PS3 with the inclusion of a large hard drive and Blu-Ray support but that doesn't help with getting games to where they are today.

You forget the Video Game Crash of 1983 which was pulled out of by the NES. Without the NES there probably wouldn't have been as large of following with console games as there are today.

The Playstation wasn't even the first disc console of it's kind either, the 3DO, Jaguar and Sega CD all came out before with the Saturn being released at the same time. So can you please explain to me how Sony and the Playstation made the video game industry?

I sold my Playstation when I got the PS2 in October of 2000, I still have all the games for it though and I still think my favourite was Coolboarders 2 as I used to play it for hours on end. I liked GT2 as well, along with Jet Moto, Destruction Derby, and Ridge Racer.

The original Playstation certainly isn't the most important moment in gaming of all time (arguably no one system is), but its certainly was a significant step forward.

It was the first to make disc based system viable, but what the did manage to do (and it could be argued that it was in part down to the marketing of it) was change the profile of people who played games. Its been said that the Playstation moved gaming from the bedroom to the living room, and it certainly appealed to a much wider audience than machine before it had.

Gamesradar recently did a series on the consoles over the decades, with this entry about the Playstation...

One of the most popular and best-selling consoles of all time, the PlayStation began as a CD add-on for the Super NES. It's a well documented event that forever changed the industry and caused the effortless dethroning of Nintendo, who had enjoyed victory the past two generations. Several key franchises saw new life here (Final Fantasy, Castlevania, Metal Gear) and many more began (Tekken, Resident Evil, Gran Turismo). If you didn't have one, someone you know did.

The whole series is...

Consoles of the 70s
Consoles of the 80s
Consoles of the 90s
Consoles of the 00s

....and are well worth a read.
