The PS2 is now Not reading any discs. What do I do?

Does your PS2 make a grinding noise when you power it up ??

Do you get Disk read errors at all ?

If the answer is yes to these question i may have a solution for you :)

That would really make my day if they send me a free game. But what should I sent the Thing in?

If your gonna send it back & it's under warranty i wouldn't advise opening it up Sony won't fix it ..

I can't be what happened to mine but i sorted it ..

It sounds to me that it is a dust problem very common with PS2's ..

If your gonna risk opening it up then there are 8 screws underneath the unit all concealed under small squares 4 of which are the rubber feet ..
Pop these off to reaveal the 8 screws..

Lift off the top but be carefull here because there is a strip of wire that looks like chewing gum wrapper this controls the reset & eject buttons ...and you can't seperate the cover from the unit ..Just stand it on it's side next to the PS2..

You will now see 4 small screws on the laser housing cover..Remove these.. Caution before doing the next step power the machine back up (with the cover off) and press Eject then power down with the Disk drawer still open ..
This will allow you to remove the laser housing cover..

I suggest that you get a can of compressed air (this can be found in most Photograhy shops) and give the works a blast of air (Short Burst's only) Don't touch the laser lens with your finger..

Then clean out the front grills on the cover and the fan at the rear of the unit ..

Then put the thing back together and try it ..

But if it's still under warranty don't open it ...

Good luck hope you get it sorted :)

What about if it's a disc scratching noise, and i don't want to open it, pedrodaman?

@ Giancarlo Dunno what you mean ..
Does it read the disks ? Does it stay on the browser screen and no disk error message appears?..

I tried this out on my PS2 a couple of days ago and it is extremely easy to do it.

My PS2 did the same thing pretty much. It wouldn't play DVDROM games or DVD movies. It would only play the purple backed PS2 games, so I sold it to Simmon Tibbet of GTP. :)

Was he aware that it was partly busted ?.

I found a Best Buy that can fix my problem. But its at a price, And I don't have to wait 20 days. But I'll give Best Buy a chance, if it acts the same, im sending it to SONY and Best Buy won't see again.

Its possible its a dust problem, cause there is alot of dust in the fan in the back.

Yes, he knew the problem it had. It's partially why he wanted to buy it. He is into modifying that sort of thing. Installing mod-chips and such.

When it starts to scratch, the game does say "Error reading ____ disc"...

It sounds like the same fault as mentioned earlyer in this thread ..

If you don't want to open it take it to a repair shop ..But be careful they don't try and pull a fast one (like saying they installed a new laser when infact they just cleaned it)and then charge you an obscene amount of money..

This is off topic but i had this amplifier that stopped working so i decided to open it up to see if i could fix it ..I noticed that there was 2 small fuses T2/308's there called..
Each fuse cost's 5p each..
I then decided to take it to a local repairer to see how honest he was..After looking at it he quoted me the crazy sum of £65 to fix it ..
I believe he was thinking one of two things ..1 ethier i would be gullible enough to pay the money to fix it ..or say na never mind just chuck it out and i will get a new one..
Then this guys got a new amp for 10p for which he can keep for himself or sell for what ever he wanted..

So i went to the electronics shop and bought the 2 fuses and installed them myself ...This was 5 years ago and the Amps still going strong not bad for 10p eh :P

I then went back to the repair shop and told him how much it actually cost to fix ..He responded by barring me from his shop ...Just goes to show ..Don't trust these crooks...

yes

Contact Sony with your problem. Sounds just like my problem. Check the bottom of all your games to see if a ring has been scratched into any of them. The PS2 did it to a few of my games. Sony said they would repair the thing and replace the scratched games all for free, I just have to pay for the shipping to get it there, they'll pay to send it back.
