the real AE86

whats a AE86 (corolla gts) really like? how fast are they really? are they over rated or are they really good cars? is drifting all there good at? are they like a hard top miata?

Well, it depends on what your definition of a good car is.

If the car is affordable, Rear Drive, very close to 50/50 weight distribution and very reliable, then I guess it's a good car.

Recently, the car has been overrated because of Initial D. That Japanese anime just glorified the AE86 more than it really is. The kids that watch these animes think that whatever the hero does or owns is good, and well, the rest is history.

The Miata isn't that reliable compared to the othe cars though. My cousin had a lot of problems with her car in the winter.

i wish i live in kansas and i don't think they let a 17 y/o take off in there car just for a test drive.

Yeah. When it's really cold, the car won't start because of the fuel pump. Same thing happened to my mom's BMW 3-series.

in san jose???? it gets cold there... wet yes but cold???? anyways wana b... a gts dont cost too much... and i am sure if you seemed interested they would let you test drive it with them in the car...

Yeah, it gets cold over here. Once, the temperature was 30ºF for two days. Obviously, that was the lowest. The highest that day was 56ºF.

Isn't there a Corolla GTS around your area wana b drifter? Ask the ownder how they feel when they drive it.

lol... dam i always though southbay was like hot all the time... lol... we will see in a few months... prolly just too hot right now for me to imagine anything else

Non-modified, about as fast as any economy hatch. 0-60 in nine seconds, or so.

are they over rated or are they really good cars?

Waaaaaay over-rated - they're sixteen years old, and they're just an over-hyped Japanese car with no real merits except endorsement in a TV show.

is drifting all there good at?

They're not even that good at drifting...

are they like a hard top miata?
Miatas are literally fifty times better.

miata's suck... the corolla is a better car for the moeny... if all you want is a cheap lil car that you dont really take ont eh freeway or long trips... miata is a cracker jack box for women who want a convertable...

at least the trueno is a relatively still car... with little to no drivers aid... stiff rear wheels... not that bad of a lil car... but no where near the best of anything...

Good point. Unquestionably the best value convertible ever, but your seven-year-old stereotypes rule it out completely. Miata's sux0r d00d!!!!!!!!!!!!111111
how would a trueno compare to a 91-94 sentra se-r?

Not well.

Another brilliant point. The Civic is completely incomparable on all counts but somehow you've managed to compare the two and come out with the boy racer idol which is now older than most of its drivers on top.

Trueno's r0x0r to the max0r!!!!!!!!!1111111

the reason i was woundering about the corolla GTS was because i like miatas but they cost to much for me. so i was wanting to know how much they are like them besides looking way cooler (i like box-e shaped cars;) ) they sound a lot like them. slow in a straight line but fast through the corners.

miatas are slow all over... sorry... but that is what i think... and only two squishy seats... uh oh....

anyways... so i imagine your price range to be below 10k for a car right... and youwant one that is gonna run... and at least have low maintainence costs right... ehhh.... i dunno if the used car market is the way to go... but for a 20 year old car... i dont hink you could beat the trueno... if you dont care about drivetrain... you could look at same period accords and the nissan that looks that way too.... personally i would shell out the money for a new car... esp if i dont want maintainence costs to cost me more than the car did... i mean at least a used car that is from teh 90's... there is one saturn that can't be too much money... dunno much about it but it is cool... the twin cam one that looks kinda like an older eclipse... even a 94 eclise in good condition would be great esp if it was a gsx or gst... stuff like that cant be that much more exp... maybe double the price of the trueno but less moeny spent on it in teh long run... or at lesat immediate long run

Slow? Well, no - the terms you're looking for is 'slightly better than average speed, far better than average handling.' Slow is very wrong.

but for a 20 year old car... i dont hink you could beat the trueno...

Do you actually not believe he could beat the Trueno for under $10,000? No kid should have a 20-year-old car, but that's way beside the point - if you (or anyone) actually holds the Trueno in standards that high, you're in for disappointment.

teh 90's...

He did it! And unintentionally! Take note!!!

the twin cam one that looks kinda like an older eclipse...

They were all twin cam, and none of them looked like any Eclipse but you're thinking of the SC1/SC2.

teh long run...

Twice!!!

hey don't get carried away here. i mean $10,000:eek: my god! i wish. i was think n more like $2,500. i want a quick very good handling car. thats why i was think n about the corolla gts. i was think n it was like a miata but cheaper. oh well i won't have the saved up till aleast fall proably winter.

Do you have insurance, maintenance, registration, and gas money squared away also?

i can take care of maintenance, my dad does title work, i might be able to talk my mom into helping me with insurance, and gas isn't really to bad $1.50 or so a gallon

haha, the ser woud be the supra in that comparison. besides ser being fwd, that is the only disadvantage. the ser is a little rocket racer.

about the 86? it is a piece of ****. if you are lucky enough to find one it will be a rusty piece of **** that has been a commmuter for 15 years. it will have close to 300 thousand miles and reliability will be a joke. when you are spending 10k to get the 3k car you purchased straightened out, you will find the novelty of having that cartoon car all gone.

the miata is 50 times the car of the 86. actaully, for the price, i cant think of a better car than the miata. i think you can get one for as low as 4k.

an alternative to the miata, if you are lucky you can maybe find a bmw e30 325 for cheap. i like them better than miatas, but i dont know, a miata may be quicker because they are so light. a 325is has a 2.5liter 6 that makes 170hp though, you be the judge.

killer cars. light, rwd, lots o torque for drifting.

roadfly.org has some good ones, and of course check on autotrader.

BMW parts are hideously - hideously - expensive. And when BMWs get old, they break, just like any other cars.

Don't get an Eclipse. The plain vanilla ones aren't that exciting, and the turbo ones suffer from crank walk and transmission problems.

There's nothing wrong with the 'AE86 Corolla... but it's just not that special, either. And right now, with drift culture being the coolest thing since sliced bread, you'll mostly be paying for hype. If I didn't need a back seat, I'd take a 1.8-litre Miata over the Corolla any day of the week. And if I did need a back seat, I'd take a first gen Sentra SE-R over the Corolla.
