The Rumble Strip - Misleading?

To be fair it's not the description of the Rumble Strip as a forum. It's wading through the masses of non descriptive thread titles eg "Check This Out!.." and then it's multiples of the exact same content.

GT is what makes this message board what it is and now with such an overwhelming amount of members, there is an overwhelming amount of points and suggestions to make this place better. Which is good, but other points and suggestions eg this one which could be solved at least with a "sticky" or an elongated message before actually accessing the threads and subthreads.... just a thought. one of many around here lol

Also, you make it sound like you can get away with anything you want in the Infield, which clearly isn't the case.

Or this gem that I made one confused night.

Dragonsitc, I've discussed moderation several times, at length. I've discussed The Infield's purpose as well, and slow chatting threads. You may want to read through them.

I can tell you right now chaos would have developed in under 5 pages with an Announcements thread in the Rumble Strip. The other element to The Infield, which is a bit of a result of how money works, is that most younger members don't have access since they have trouble getting the money together from Mom and Dad or whatever source they have. which tends to add a bit of maturity to the posters. Which sounds harsh, perhaps, but has been developed from years of dealing with anime communities, which are generally seething with chaos.

No one will ever stop you from starting a thread on a subject that you could have otherwise posted in the Announcement thread had it been left open - provided it's warranted. Otherwise, just citing two examples, my I'm going to be a dad again! thread and FK's FoolKiller Becomes Bionic would have been shelved.

While I agree with you on the few vs. many off topic issue, you can't seriously believe that it's as easy to police the, what? 1000 regular posters in TRS as it is the 160 (without an increase in staff) that have posted in the Infield Announcement thread, can you?

Also, you make it sound like you can get away with anything you want in the Infield, which clearly isn't the case.

No I'm not suggesting that it's as easy to police, infact I clearly yes it is harder to manage (or specifically I said it's hard work but thats what I was referring to). I feel it unfair to discriminate by whats easier to moderate though, this is my opinion and nothing said will budge me on that I do not expect change, clearly, because of that.

It says "Off Topic" in terms of threads not related to the Gran Turismo games, which the site was originally conceived for, not in terms of encouraging off-topic posting within the threads that get posted there.
The general subject areas of the site, such as the Automotive subforums, Sports & Fitness, Online Racing, etc., etc. have emerged & expanded as the site has grown with the members attracted to the site as the GT games have progressed and the additional discussion that's kept everyone occupied in between games as people lose interest in a GT title and await the next iteration of the franchise, but the description of the Rumble Strip (as one of the first breakaway areas) has remained the same, and so has it's purpose.

It's a matter of emphasis, and you're chosing to put the emphasis in the wrong place.

Perhaps so, but the fact remains removing all possibility of confusion is much better then leaving something which could be taken wrongly as I did. It doesn't say in relation to anything but similarly every other topic which isn't then GT could be labelled as off topic could it not? Indeed some sections have expanded but I'm thinking more of new members here, the rumble strip in itself has it's own regularly visited thread and infact it's the most active right now in the general section with 20 viewing (closest being 15 in music). I believe that constitutes some sort of clear description as it isn't complete randomness that falls in there and there are still topics and general subjects to be found. We're told there's no general subject but that's simply illogical when every thread created as a subject unless it is say for instance a chat about anything style thread. Even the rubbish like How Many Replies has a subject, just a low quality one in my eyes.

I'm not choosing to put emphasis in the wrong place, I'm putting emphasis where the description allowed me and confused me in order to try and push for a small, easy to alter change which requires alot less effort then simply arguing with me about it.

Or this gem that I made one confused night.

Unfortunately, time is short I can't read those threads now, that said you can't accurately present the above as fact. It's simply not as you can't prove it due to it not being a repost. You are predicting it will go down in under 5 pages but quite frankly, I still believe under 5 pages is not enough to warrant mass complaint if it did go down and was consequently closed, and it would have avoided my complaints right now almost certainly thus saving work load involved in this thread and my private discussions and, go figure, limiting damage so to speak.

Finally, I don't think you can get away with anything in the Infield at all, but you can clearly get away with more just because there's less of you as those threads in the rumble strip don't even get a chance as in this case.

Yay! At the meere mention of it some fool tells me to get over it. It doesn't hurt to reminisce about it with fellow friends from back then ;)

I really think being called a 'fool' is uncalled for.

I respectfully submit that "removing all possibility of confusion" is not going to be realistic. There are just too many people and topics here for that to be possible.

There is surely a way of providing less ambiguity to remove a chunk of it at least, for the sake of such a minimal effort.

No.

The longer threads like that exist, the more complaining will arise at their closure. At the moment, you are currently crusading for someone else's thread, under the pretense that everything should be given a chance.

Yes, the thread is an exact repost. But we have had several similar threads that can be used to predict it how it will unfold. And a combined decades of experience on these matters from the staff. You've been here a bit under 3 years. You likely don't recall the chaos that were the various "Conversation Threads." Or the rapid rate at which loosely topic threads fall apart on larger forums; hell, the fairly simple ones such as "Google your post count" people seem to have trouble with.

It is kind of like this - if the package looks like a bomb, sounds like a bomb, feels like a bomb, guess what. It probably is a bomb. Or does it deserve a chance too?

Yes technically it can't be proven, but it's a matter of knowing the community. I don't know how active you've been since 2007, but being here since 2006 has taught me a lot about how the community acts and where potential threads may go. I agree newer people may not know what is acceptable in the rumble strip, but just giving the threads inside a quick glance gives a certain baseline as to what is acceptable. Even if someone new makes an unacceptable thread, it won't take them very long to understand with some help from the moderators.

Don't take this the wrong way but I find it funny that although it's not a mass complaint, it barely took the thread one page for you to make a big stink about it being closed.

As for the premium forum, GTP isn't a government, If Jordan and the moderators feel that a thread is manageable in the premium forum and not in the general, that decision is ultimately up to them.

I might be restating what others have said, but the whole repetitive "you can't prove that" thing is starting to get on my nerves.

Well, another reason that the mod could have locked the thread was to get people to buy memberships. Since the same thread was in the premo section (as I have understood) he wanted to make people say "Aww damn! Maybe I should pay money and become a premium member!".

Oh ya, the mod is going to get a high commission on the users paying premium to see that thread now?

No, Im just saying that the website will be running better if more money goes into Jordan's pockets.

Where's the sarcasm tags? He's kidding, right??

Whaddya mean?
Are you kidding me? This is almost completely unbelievable. *stares in complete awe*. So let me get this right: You theorize that Dragonistic is not being supported here because Jordan and the rest of the "mod squad" need money? How could you even possibly suggest anyone would be in league with that here? I don't even know what to say except you when you shoot next time, aim a little lower and to the left. You may hit the point.

Regards,
Jetboy

Not necessarily. I think so because if it is in the premo section, then why is it not locked in there and it is outside? I'm not saying they NEED money. I'm not saying the mod squad and Jordan need money and how they are limiting non-premium members. I'm just pointing out that this is a valid reason but unlikely because not many people are THAT needy. But, sometimes even the most unthinkable can happen. I know as a fact that a website like this needs money to operate and during these bad economic times, here will be less money being donated to GTP. And anyway, who wouldn't want money?

Have you read the thread? It's allowed in the The Infield because it's a smaller community in there and easier to manage if it does start to go off. Also as said by Azure earlier it's harder for younger members to procure enough monies to purchase which also helps encourage a higher maturity.

In that which you quoted from me, I refered to the description, not everything should be given a chance clearly, but something which has potential should. It's clear a thread asking for the most amount of replies possible has no beneficial effects, it's clear that a babe thread is dancing the line of the AUP already and thus new members should avoid it, it's clear to me that an announcement thread can work as the premium one does.

Also, to use your bomb example, tell it to the unarmed man who got shot repeatedly in a subway in London by police (possibly last year but may be sooner) because they thought he was armed possible with explosives. Why? Because he ran for whatever reason when the police tried to stop him, or so is claimed, they had no proof of his weapon they just thought it looked like it. Can they call damage limitation on that? It's a possibly extreme example, but none more so then comparing a thread to a bomb.

It may be clear to you in your limited forum running experience but remember Jordan has had this forum for a number years and the moderators he has chosen have been around here for a long time. Ultimatley if Jordon believes that the thread has potential to get out of hand then that is all that matters. It is his site and he pays for the upkeep so the decision is his. In my experience from my time here Jordan is a very fair man and accepts input from members but he can't always be changing things to suit a minority.

Some say that :gtplanet: begat him and not vice versa, and that he's still so young that he draws his mustache with a crayon. All we know is that we call him...

Boss. :scared:

:p

And this is about where edited to feature Jordan, chuck norris facts start rolling in..... All of which started by a mod :p haha

Which is why I was trying to put more emphasis on the rumble strip description and not on the thread closure due to those issues already locked in minds. I may disagree, but I don't expect a change which I have pointed out. I believe the rumble strip description could remove more ambiguity and wish to focus on that, the other point raised has been said enough now and I'll close this thread personally for the sake of wasted time and effort if the argument continues when zero further progress is made. I accept things aren't going to change, and have made personal decisions based upon that which I won't delve into, but I still believe change can be made as regards the description in the form of rewording not in the form of changed moderation.

Maybe I didn't make my point clear so I will say it again. I wasn't only referring to thread closure.

You say you don't agree and accept there will be no change but the more you go on it sounds like the opposite. Maybe it's time to give it a rest.

I say no change in reference to the thread closure and every other issue bar that of the description of the rumble strip, I think there's a clear improvement that can be made and it's not difficult to implement with the description.

The only flaw in that is you, so far, appear to be the only one who is reading to much into the forums description and saying change should be made. Completely ignoring the fact that for the last 8-9 years the forum description has largely stayed the same with no other complaints. I certainly can't recall anybody else saying that the Rumble Strip, a forum for off topic (non gran turismo) discussion, with no general subject (anything that doesn't fit into other forums in place) should be changed over the 7 years I've been here. The description conveys exactly what the forum is about, nothing more and nothing less, it has done it job very well.

Jean Charles de Menezes. 2005, FYI. And it's certainly a more extreme example than Azuremen's metaphor. Personally, not an example I'd use lightly and a little distasteful to do so 👎

I don't see how it is distasteful to be honest, it's a perfect example of how thinking things look like something when they really aren't and resulted in terrible consequences. I apologise for the offence but it's clear that you all think I'm being stupid. Point taken, and I'll go ahead and close the thread.

Not to be rude by opening a closed thread or anything, but I do believe it's worth noting that far from it being in our interest to encourage people to go Premium by force, at least 2 (and actually many more) of the staff members here have given away at least $20 of their own money to donate premium subscriptions to other members, whether it be by contest or general ackknowledgement of a job well done in the last few months alone, and whether this money ends up in Jordan's pockets (I don't believe this for a second) or going back to the site or not, it's still well worth it to have this site to be a part of. 👍
