the rumble strips are sucking me in!!!!!!ahhh!!

I've been wonderin this ever since i first played....what causes the inclined (if that's the rite word) rumble strips to suck in F1 cars and the Trueno?? (there may be others but i haven't experienced dis with them yet)

i would be racing, then hit that rumble strip, then it just causes my wheel to stick to it and i spin out.
 
The rumble strip slows down your inside tires, so often if you get just the front inside tire on it for a long time with a light car, the back will swing out and your car will steer into the rumble strip. Also I think maybe the tire gets "hooked" on the inside of the rumble strip. Once I was running at Tokyo and my front tire got stuck almost in the wall and I couldn't move at all until I went back to 1st gear.

ooooo, i guess that also explains why grabbing the strips are better for turning, at least that's wut it feels like to me. ^_^

The strips probably don't have any effect on it because it doesn't go that fast in the first place. The car needs to be moving at a good speed for the back to slide out like that, because the tires must be right at the limit of their traction.
 
I have found that in fast corering you have to turn in tight enough that you hit the "candy-cane" so it throws the car around the corner quicker and tighter... for instance in the circle tests you will speed up and turn tighter when you hit the candy-cane but if you are not careful it will get too fast and push you off.....
 
i get it on most cars on most tracks..
sometimes on track like r11 i get stuck on the wall... they do slow you down considerably so best to go near but not on them.
altho they can be used to help faster cornering in some instances....
 
The rumble strip is your friend. Learn to exploit it properly, and it will show you a faster line than you could ever imagine. But their assistance comes at a hefty price if you get too aggressive 👍

First off, in the real world, friction slows an object down.

The "rougher and bumpier" surface of the strips creates an effect that slows the tire which hit it.

Another possible and very likely reason for the loss of control, at times, when hitting the strip is bump steer.

When you hit that strip, you will be bumped up for an instant and in that instant you will not be touching that tire to the ground.

When that tire hits the ground again, you will not be in the proper postion "steering wise" and that will contribute to a possible loss of control.

Learn to exploit the strips or just avoid them.

They can make you faster or make you slower... its up to you.

I'm sure you've been told this before, but in case you haven't here's a little tip for ya.

At high speeds, instead of fighting the curbs, use them to your advantage. If hit right, they will allow you to take the turn at much higher speeds then you would be able to otherwise.

Very, very true. It's difficult to steer or accelerate a car with no wheels touching the ground... and I've seen Showroom Stock racers roll a car after taking a little too much advantage of the rumble strips!

My fine control is not yet good enough where I can exploit it every time, but there are certain cars that love the curb and some that don't. The RGT likes to kiss the curbing but will get sucked in if you get too much tire on it. The Elise is allergic to rumble strips because it is sooooo light it seems to get thrown around too much.

Most rumble strips can be used well but there are some that you want to stay away from: Turn Three at Seattle (first left after the hairpin) will almost always throw you into the outside wall); I also have bad luck with the yellow-and-black bits at Rome, though the red-and-white bits are fine; and of course the infamous 'Freejack' rumble strip on the last turn at Trial Mountain.
 
Another thing to take note of, if you are going to try and take advantage of them, is spring rate. You can go virtually as high as you want on the rear, but the front needs to stay below 50% for most cars. Now, you'll run into cars like the lotus 190, where even a 4 on the springs offers no help, the car will bounce. But, for the most part, you'll get good action off the intital bump, with a lower front spring rate 👍 Try it out,... experiment,.. you'll leanr a lot of stuff real quick :tup Goto Tokyo and LSR to test this :)

I noticed that too with my Lotus Elise Sport a couple of days ago when I did the Elise trophy... The car was fine as long as I kept it on the tarmac! For me, the only thing I can do if I want to avoid a spin-out is to let go of gas and very gently steer away from the rumble strip.

I guess that you do get used to them and after a while you learn to take advantage of the situation ;)

This whole problem is the #1 reason I dont like to drive the 2 Elise's. My driving style uses the Rumble Strips to turn sometimes, and I always get instantly, and somewhat unrealistically spun by the rumble strips. But only when I'm driving the Elise's.

I have brought up ride height but it doesnt really help.
 
It's true, the Elise is the carmost adversely affected by the rumble strips, it gets very snappy and tries to drive up them. I think it's more that the front is pulled IN than the back being pushed OUT. Why the Elise is the most affected I don't know, could it be something to do with its (relatively) narrow front tyres that are maybe more prone to falling into the gaps between the bumps on the rumble strips, and the lightness of the nose meaning that it's more affected than front engined cars with similar sized front tyres? I'm just speculating.
 
I do find that my F1 car gets sucked in, S1 @ Apricot hill is another example, with the rumble strip on the big hairpin. Try it out, it really drags you into the sand.

Whoa! Overmoderation?!

Now all of our posts are being screened and categorized! Forums with too many sections and topics are no fun because the online population gets divided and your not going to have as many people reading your posts, it becomes a pain in the ass navigating etc etc.

There are umpteen billions of threads that wander into new topics several times over. I am glad this hasnt been happening the whole time I've been here.
 
On the other hand, perhaps there was undermoderation before. What is the point in discussing gun ownership in a thread that discusses curb-riding as a helpful driving technique on a Gran Turismo 3-specific board ?

I posted in the thread stating what I had done so any interested parties could follow. Just because a handful of people can't be bothered to go to the correct forum doesn't make the discussion relevant here. If the thread had moved on to other driving techniques besides rumble strips I wouldn't have even considered splitting it, but since the two subjects were in no way related (and one was totally outside the subject of this particular board) I feel it was appropriate to move it to the correct forum.
