GMI has an interesting write-up on the first spy shots of the first Delta-II car

GMI
In the end, we can expect see 2 mainstream versions: the next generation Astra to be sold under the Opel/Vauxhall/Saturn banners and the Chevrolet version that will be sold in world-wide markets.

There are other possibilies as well; some confirmed, some implied:

A new G5: IF and WHEN it makes it to market, it will only be a placeholder as Pontiac moves toward RWD. Otherwise, I don't expect to see Pontiac making much use of this platform.
Buick Skylark: It is slated to be sold in America and supplant the Buick Excelle in China. We know that the Skylark will replace the Excelle from an Edumund's InsideLine Story and it was more than implied it would make it to North America as well.
Saab 9-1: This is the vehicle that will create added volume for the Saab brand and give GM a legitamite competitor to vehicles like the A3, 1-Series, C30, et al.
Next Chevy HHR: When the Cobalt is replaced, it will obviously mean either the HHR will need to be replaced eventually or phased out. The recent popularity of the HHR and of "crossovers" in general will probably mean a 2nd generation of HHR will be making it to market.
The Chevy Volt: GM's wunder-car is supposed to be built on the Delta II platform; another important product riding on this architecture.

And who knows what else may be coming down the line? Could we see an Astra convertible? Or prehaps a sub-Theta-based SUV coming on these mechanicals as well?

Let's hope GM gets it right and makes the replacement look both upscale and expensive -- just like the new Malibu.

I must make note that the G5 claim, as pointed out in the clip, is still unsorted information. As of right now, current GM cannon dictates that it will be the two-door version of the RWD G6 shortly after the end of the decade.

The photos!

Very nice indeed, and should be a very competent chassis by the time it debuts. Having one Chevrolet model across the line should be quite good, and again, having a solid Opel/Vauxhall/Saturn model will be nice as well. If the chassis is as good as they say, I wouldn't be surprised to see it go much like the same that is used by Honda in the Civic... Put it under anything and it should perform quite well.

Volcom stylin.

Hard to judge the graphics with the crazy camo, but it doesn't look all that interesting yet. We'll have to wait a couple more months.

I see more than just VW as well. I can't say I like the proportion of this car. I'd be surprised if this car turned out good(looking).

An experiment gone horribly WRONG! If you ask me...

It looks like a bad photograph where a Toyota Camry's front end was superimposed over a Volkwagen Passat's body.

Ya I was going to say it looks like a squished Camry. I just can't see that being a GM.

I thought Hyundai Sonata when I first saw it, but I wouldn't worry...the American models should have much more expressive faces. I'd like to see how it drives before I judge it.

(Note: You know, disguising the car as a Hyundai is a stroke of genius...)

Nah, the Sonata is such a well composed, simple design. Hyundai got that car spot on, everything works together. The graphics on this car don't seem to follow anything, just like the mentioned Camry.

Am I the only one who has a bit of a problem picturing a Buick Skylark as a small car?

Yes...

Please, put some bigger wheels on to fill the sides of the car. Good thing this is just a test mule. I'm assuming we can expect different bodies on the new Delta-IIs?

Another rear-drive platform can only be good. I could see these cars as being pretty goos performers, being small and RWD.

To clear things up for you guys, this is a Daewoo version of the Delta-II cars, not the Chevrolet or the Vauxhall/Opel/Holden yet. My guess is that the chassis, engines and transmissions will all be shared across the board, but the styling will be very different with the regional brands.

For the Vauxhall/Opel/Holden, take the looks of the current Vectra/Insignia prototype and adapt it to a car this size and you can get a good idea of what to expect. For the Chevy, take the looks of the '08 Malibu and apply, you can get a good idea as well.

Really its more about the chassis than anything, which as I recall, should be due for 2010-ish...

I'm not holding my breath. GM is the king of rebadging the same design across their range without any other changes.

Quiet, you!

Not that halfbreed. I'm still picturing something that's really long and low slung.

-> Um looks like a VW? I don't think so, It's more of a Kia Spectra front, Mazda 3/Axela sides, and a Lexus GS rear. It looks like we have too much of over-enthusiastic VW fans here in GTP. :indiff:

Buick Skylark will be based on the Delta-II chassis that the Daewoo (pictured in the first post) will start rolling on soon. Thats the only reason why it was mentioned...

The second Delta II is rolling:

Thats a Cobalt, which looks like a shrunken Malibu. No word on specs or anything, just a photo.

My guess?

May be the first of the American GM cars to get the 1.4L Turbo, probably will keep the big 2.4L as an option as well. Will be interesting to see how the next Cobalt SS looks, because as it stands, this car looks "heavy."

Unless the Lacetti and the Cobalt are going to be one and the same when the redesign rolls around, I'd say we're looking at a Suzuki/Daewoo/International Chevy.

It seems like, in a time where gas prices are finally starting to rise to levels that people notice, Chevy has done exactly the opposite of what is necessary. w00t!

-> Not bad, far better than the current gen, but:

- Front-end = Suzuki SX-4 sedan
- Rear-end = VW Jetta
- Side = Mazda 3
- Grille = Honda Accord

-> And also an engineering co-op with Daewoo as shown with those S-Korean Manufacturer plates:

^ I'm not saying its going to be a bad car, but also not exciting too. :)
