Jordan -

In loading this page and when attempting to load threads, as I mentioned in the 'welcome' thread, it's extremely slow - but I don't think the site is any slower than before, it's just that threads are loading completely before displaying. On dialup, that's killer - it takes about 45 seconds per thread page before I can even see it, making it practically as useless to visit now as it was when the forums were down over the past two days.

Any suggestions would be appreciated - if you think tweaking the server would be helpful, as you said, then go for it and we'll see, but as I said it seems to be loading just as quickly, but not displaying until fully loaded - I've never had this problem before on GTP5 or anywhere else on the Web.

Thanks!

I've just waited in excess of 75 seconds to type this message, and the page still has not finished loading as I type this in.

I know this is a popular site, I know that the server strain is probably immense (and the bandwidth), but I'm sorry... it looks nice, but it's becoming unworkable. (Trying not to swear here peeps).

I would guess that the majority of this slowness is due not to the website (nor the fact that it's busy) but by the design of the board itself... there's too sodding much going on to be sucked out of that database.

I'm on a 1.5 Mbit line, and this is really big pain in the butt. Needs more work to iron out the gremlins... I'm sure the GTP team will improve the speed over the next few days

From the time I signed on, it's taken about eight minutes to get here. Now granted, that's including a post at g-g.com, but I only did that because the first two times I tried to access this thread, it took three minutes apiece and wouldn't finish the job. I hope the speed improves with time, but at the current pace, I'm completely shut out of the site - it's not worth waiting this long to make a post or read someone else's.

I know, it's driving me insane as well. There's no excuse for these speeds, certainly not at the price I'm paying. I've done all that I can, checked everything that I could check and tested everything I think might be causing the problem, and come up blank. I've hired a few professional server administrators to come take a look at my server to see if they can identify the problem. They should begin working on it any time now. But, with my luck, it will probably be tomorrow. It sure would be nice for something to go right once in a while. :indiff:

I'm glad to see it's not just me. The site is to slow to make it worth coming to. It's taken me a good five minutes just to be able to type this and I'm on a cable connection. I can't even scroll down the page. It seems like my browser is reloading every line as I try to scroll. Looking forward to being able to actually enjoy the new site.

Well, I am recieving e-mail notifications once again, after the change to GTP6. I'm pretty happy about that, and the site looks great, so I have faith that you will get the problem figured out.... No worries bro......

;)

Browsing the forum itself, jumping from one to another goes relatively fast. It's the threads that are slow to load, for some reason.

Pages are loading slowly for me as well. I thought it may have been because I'm using Netscape, but it's just the same the Avant browser, which is IE based.

M5power mentioned that the pages seem to load completely before displaying, which may make it seem a bit longer than it actually is. But I found that even when the page has loaded, the bottom of the page is still saying it's transfering data.

I think it was too much to hope for the changeover to be plain sailing, obviously that was the plan, but it's computers we're talking about here. I hope any remaining problems are simple ones Jordan. It all must be messing with your head. I know I wouldn't have as much patience.

Just a question as well. I know that some threads have not got any attachments back, and quite rightly at the moment. But when everything is back up to speed, will the attachments be put back, or have they disappeared into the ether forever.?

I've got the same thing happening to me PunkRock. Maybe it's just that there are lot's of images on each page?

Redhead, attachments will be back in all their former glory. I'm just waiting for the professional server admins to finish their work before putting the server under the load of finishing all the attachments.

And guys, a lot of poeple mention this, but images don't have much to do with the sluggish speeds we're experiencing. After you've downloaded them once, they're all cached in your browser. Besides, there is the nearly the same number of images now as their was in GTP5.

In just the transfre from GTP5 to GTP6 I've seen an amazing slowdown. Aggravatingly slow. I know it's not my connection as I've tested on other websites that are more graphic intensive, and had no problems.

Viewing a forum, is amazingly fast, it's the thread loading that takes serious amounts of time.

Jordan, has there been any developments since yesterday? I wanted to let this matter ride, but also wanted to add my two cents.

Yes, Alex, the server is under heavy attack.

A direct Denial of Service, on our specific server (not just another one on the network). I'll never understand why anyone would want to do this. :( I'm working with my host now, hopefully we'll get this resolved soon, I was hoping to go out tonight.

Definately one of the slowest, if not the slowest forum I visit.

Just in Jordan's defence I would like to say that this is probably one of the biggest forums you visit aswell.

It is slower, but my 150k is doing alright now. Mind you it is midnight (GMT) as I type this so...

I had a thought about the general slowness:

In changing from GTP5 to GTP6, every single member is pulling a complete new set of images from the server directly, rather than from their own local cache. This will mean that the bandwidth usage at the "B" end (that's the GTP end), is much higher than normal.

Once everyone's caches settle down, the speed will increase.

It's just a personal theory, but if Jordan cares to share the bandwidth data from June/July with us at the beginning of August, it may prove interesting.

I have noticed the site accelerating as I've spent more time on it.

I just posted this, but it doesn't seem to be there.

I think your correct Giles, I've noticed quite a speed difference since this morning. 👍

How is the speed for everyone this morning?

It's a lot quicker than it was, but still not as fast as before the changeover. It seems a bit quieter at the moment, we'll have to see what it is like when all the Americans (North/South) start coming online en masse.

Looks like the professionals you got in have made a difference. Always nice when they earn their money. :)

I had problem about an hour ago, were one of the GT4 car list threads wouldn't load, but I've been in there since. I clicked on it, it thought about loading it, then said done, but just stayed on the same page. Must just have been a freak momentary thing. Fingers crossed. :)

That's encouraging, redhed. I would suggest switching to GTP Lite (see the link in my signature), it runs much faster. I suppose the new style is slowing down people more than I realised...

There's a GTP Lite of GTP6? Cool. Well, I'm supporting Giles' theory about why things slowed down, although this morning they seem to be doing fine (I've been browsing for a while; it's still moderately slow, but it's sped up a good deal from last night).

Well, for me, it's still rediculously slow...... I have no doubt that what Giles suspected can happen. However, I haven't seen much, if any, improvement since GTP6 was unveiled, so I don't see any evidence that that is the case, this time..... I hope your right, Giles, but I wouldn't count on it.....

;)
