The State of Lobbies in GT7

The general reception of GT7 has been really good, and I for one am loving it, with over 40hrs into the game already. However, my major gripe at the moment is the state of lobbies in the game, and I wanted to get my thoughts out there.

As a league organizer, I run almost exclusively in lobbies in GT Sport, and Like many, I was excited to see what features GT7 would bring us in terms of lobby customization.

Last night I finally got around to hosting a lobby session with my usual gang to try it out, and to say I'm disappointed is an understatement. How they took so many steps back from the lobbies in GT Sport is beyond me, and many features missing. So here is a rundown of my observations so far, which I will update following additional feedback from you guys:

  • No option to save lobby preset, so each lobby always needs to be set up from scratch
  • As if that's not bad enough, there is no option to change any settings at all after lobby is live. If anything needs changing, for example change track, lap count, weather etc., you're forced to close the lobby and make a new one .. from scratch.
  • General stability of the lobbies seems really bad. I was playing with the same crew I run races with in GT Sport, but in GT7 the majority was lagging very heavily despite being on wired high speed connections.
  • When starting race, it's common occurance for some people to disconnect, and sometimes the game simply crashed for those people involved. During one race, 8 out of 16 players disconnected at race start.
  • After a race, race results can not be viewed
  • (FIXED) No option to kick players
  • All the preset chat options, along with selecting players to tag, is missing
  • No option for a qualifier session, and no reverse grid option either
  • (FIXED) Timed races finish instantly as soon as the time runs out.

The good things are that lobbies can now be set to have certain requirments for tire compounds, and the pit lane penalties are a nice touch, but otherwise the lobby experience is a total trainwreck as of now. I'm honestly quite baffled how bad lobbies are, and why there are so many features missing from GT Sport.

Fortunately, "Lobby features" is part of PD's update roadmap, and I sinceraly hope they get this in order soon. I've been running the Icelandic Gran Turismo Championship for 4 years now, and we're in the later stages of the current season, but will move to GT7 for the 2022-23 season starting this fall. So I'm really banking on PD to get the lobbies in order.

I know you fellow league runners must share my concerns. I'm probably forgetting some issues, or some issues I haven't run into yet, so please feel free to comment if you have other issues to report, and I'll add them to the list. This way we can keep a comprehensive list of lobby issues, and I'll update the thread as PD updates the game and/or we discover new issues.

Yeah, I'm part of a group that races each Monday and lobbies are pretty poor at the moment. The fact you have to create a new lobby to change circuit etc is really disappointing.

Am sure they'll eventually get around to making it like lobbies were in GTS, but it'll likely take a long time. We've had a couple of times when people being disconnected or joining means we can't start the race and have to start a completely fresh lobby too.

Yeah it's rather frustrating to restart everything just to change the smallest of settings. I am glad that PD is acknowledging it somewhat by mentioning lobbies in their update roadmap, so hopefully they get it together. They have until the fall to get it in order! :D

It’s a joke. I would rather them delay the game rather than releasing it unfinished.

If it was a PS5 exclusive then I doubt there would be nearly as many problems. Better to chase the money though right?

Yea ok, but getting rushed doesn't mean you drop the ball on tried and true features that players have been enjoying for years...if they were not ready with lobbies, then I would have preferred that they delay the launch of this feature instead of giving us something that undermines their brand. I just don't get how PD makes internal decisions sometimes. Why shoot yourself in the foot like this?

Either they are that daft (possible), or they did it intentionally (also possible)...regardless, it's a bad signal to send to dedicated fans.

Yep. So many issues l've listed elsewhere. Apart from a few albeit major bugs, the game is ok, even the physics can be dealt with, but online lobbies needs to be prioritised. The next patch should at the least be a roll back to GTS lobby format. I could live with that until a later patch. In it's current form it might as well not exist.

I don't see any of this issues listed as bugs from PD, which really scare me. This means they are going to leave lobbies as they are right now, useless?

Well they do have "Lobby features" listed in their update roadmap they posted following the release of the game, so surely they will work on the lobbies.

Because they're not bugs. Bugs result in unwanted behavior of the software, not having those options is not a bug, but a design choice (and a pretty bad one at that).

If they don't add the options to make lobbies work i swear to ****ing christ. You know. I started a league. All new GT players and PD legit killed my league with this lobby bs. They need to fix this yesterday. Tired of the excuses. They had years to design GT7. Their using GTSport Assets for GT7. There's not a single reason why the Sport lobby system couldn't be transferred to GT7. NO REASON.

It just shows how sloppy they must be in PD. it was really easy to improve the lobby in GTSport. Literally a programmer could fix many issues in a few hours. Instead, the just pasted the code and managed to make it even worse. Congratulations.

Yeah MET. It makes zero sense. They have completely broken the lobby system. What's even more troubling to me is their using GTSport assets. There is NO excuse for GT7. Absolutely none. We created a league because many wanted to play GT7 for the first time. I have 100+ in my league and for what. The league hasn't been online because kicking people out just because you have to change lobby settings and start over. No one wants to deal with it. PD HAS LITERALLY TOOK PEOPLE WHO HAD NO INTEREST IN GT BEFORE AND JOINED A LEAGUE TO TRY. NOW NO ONE GIVES A ****. I FEEL LET DOWN BECAUSE OM A MODERATOR.

I created my first lobby today and could not even start the race because "Players are still initializing" every time even when no one was joining. We got most of the lobby to do a formation lap and grid start manually just to have a short race. And I don't understand why the race timing screen or broadcast spectating is not in this game, or many other things from GT Sport's lobby like changing room settings, kicking players, qualifying, etc. The lobby must have been one of the last things made in the development of GT7 and rushed, it's a mess.

Has anybody had problems with Sport championship lobby’s not starting? I’ve had a couple of occasions where the countdown ends and then it just doesn’t matchmake.

Never have a problem in custom lobby’s.

You missed:

  • Random variable weather (rain/dry) doesn't seem to work. Or at least, I haven't made it work, and I tried all combinations many times

It really is appalling...They could have just copied and pasted the GTS version...

Totally agree that the state of lobbies is dire.

All I want is to race against real people in the car I want on the track I want with the settings I want…. It’s not too much to ask is it?

Sport mode is not for everyone and this hilarious BOP imbalance makes it completely unpalatable. With 400+ cars there’s only really a couple of viable choices to be competitive in daily race B & C… a Mazda and a Peugeot.

PD please fix lobbies and quick!

For the 1st time on GT7 I've been doing lobby racing the past couple of days and the frame rate has been horrible on PS4 Pro. Especially at Nurburging. Made me feel a bit sick. Made a lot of mistakes because I'm not used to such drops in frame rate. Also riddled with bugs.
