The Steam Controller - Revolution in gamepad design or...?

I think it's a revelation simply for finally making use of the back of the controller, there's been all that unused space since controllers were a thing and they're finally putting it to use. Shame there's only two buttons but that's still a win!

Additionally, the two-stage triggers, that's a brilliant feature. The X52 HOTAS has a two-stage (digital) trigger and it's super handy for Elite Dangerous, moving something like aim down sight/fire, accelerate/boost or guard/attack to a single trigger frees up more buttons. Maybe there aren't a whole load of applications for it yet but it opens up some options for keyboard > controller rebinding.

Which reminds me... This controller may never really 'stick'; multi-platform games (the ones that are more likely to be played on a pad, really) will still have to be designed around the Xbox One controller because it doesn't have as many inputs as a DS4 or Steam controller, so the Steam controller's extra buttons will go to waste there... But I don't care, I'd love a controller that enables me to play point and click games from the sofa and this will do that.

I wonder if we'll be able to map the rear buttons to work as shift buttons or mode selectors; you could feasibly use a pad for all of Elite's controls if you could double or triple all the inputs.

Haven’t played anything on my PC, except Assetto Corsa, since I got a PS4 9 months ago, but I’m still exited to get one of those. Been playing only games that support the Xbox360 controller on my PC before that and really want to try something different. After a day at work sitting on a desk with KB+M for the most part, I’m really not in a mood to continue doing it at home and that limits my choice of games. Also 55 euro is a reasonable price.
