The Stig Challenge

Full grids have been spotted on the TGTT. I've seen videos of the Fiat 500 going around the track with multiple cars on it.

So have I, I have seen a video of 8 supercars, Corvettes and such, around TGTT. You can cut corners, but it isn't the spirit, isn't it? By the way, the Boeing 747 is there.

I wonder how the AI would cope, should there be no ghost overcrossing? Taking out a car's balance with a PIT manouvere would be great.

Fair enough your ghost car idea sounds more likely then 👍
Although that is going to be a bit offputting running through cars or having them go through you whichever way you look at it. :nervous:

Maybe they can add a contact penalty if you pass through a ghost car on TGTT. That would stop people from taking advantage of it if they turn into ghost cars for that portion of the track.

I'm guessing the races will be set up in such a way as to prevent you from getting a full half-lap ahead of the other cars. Either the races will be too short, or the cars will be close enough in performance as to never be too far behind you.

I hope they don't make a restriction as such. What about online races? There has to be something implemented, or online races there will be a mess.

Now the Top Gear team HAS to do something epic with that game. Last time was good, but now the thing is playing on their turf. Wanna see Clarkson drool a bit, too.

To be honest, as soon as it was mentioned that the TGTT would be in the game, it was fairly obvious that there would be a mode to beat times from The Stig, otherwise why ride the hype of the show? Nice to hear that somewhat confirmed, although we don't know exactly how it will be implemented.

I would say that yes, we'll get to use said cars, and I really am hoping for ghosts of The Stig, even though it will be easy to beat them, still nice to have.

Isn't that your answer right there? Why ride the hype of the most watched "car" program in the world? Put TopGear on anything and millions of people will eat it up.

Wait... The Stig got canned? Why?

Is he going to be replaced by "Big Stig" from the US? ha ha.

He wanted to make money off book deals like the other presenters which would have meant revealing his identity which ended with a court case and him not being the Stig anymore, much like what happened with the original black stig

By the way, how will the TGTT cope because it is a figure of eight track? Wont cars crash into each other in the overlapping section?

Yes they will, and do.

I was that car that the lead AI smashed into.

I like the idea of challenging the Stig's times in the various cars in the game but I'm not sure if a ghost car will be possible. I'm assuming the GT data logger wasn't in the cars when they did the laps so how would PD be able to judge how quick the car was around each sector of the race track? The only way to roughly do it would be to view video footage of each lap and time the car between certain points to create a ghost car but the overall total lap time is possible, you just might be quicker in one part and slower in another to achieve the same time.

I hope there is a leaderboard for each person so you can scroll through and look at the time in each car like on the show, and now weather is confirmed maybe a dry leaderboard and a wet leaderboard.

What?? That sounds like a pretty big flaw.

They should have made it where the other intersecting cars are completely invisible to you, and your car is completely invisible to them. Like a ghost effect someone mentioned.

thought it could be like that... but hey a demo derby like thing would be fun..

ANd anyway, its a 1:25 lap with stig in a supercar.. so that's a 1:30 lap with you playing teh game in a supercar. So half a lap is 45 seconds. So to collide with someone you need to be approx 45 seconds down.

If you are loosing 1 second a lap then thats a massive gap you going down on, you might loose 6 at the start but as it spaces out you shouldn't loose more thna half a second.. anyway.. even if you average 1 second a lap slower you need to be on your 46th lap to collide.

At 1:30 pace or 1:31 pace that is more than an hour of gameplay on that one track before you collide!

SO sure, if your racing an idiot then it it will happen sooner, but then them moving out of the way is hardly the biggest of there problems. If your playing for an hour and 10 minutes then yes you may hit problems, but i don't hink thats the really a PD problem its more a driving skill

I would consider that a flaw. Cars dont ghost on the top gear track in real life so they should not ghost in the game. Besides they have had many 'races' around that track in the show and have managed not to hit each other.

Thought about that too. But you're forgetting that if the AI spins out (or I do), then it's easy to lose chunks of time.

It we are limited to (2) cars on the track at the same time then I think this will be a non-issue. Someone mentioned a full grid though, and Famine posted that he was hit. Details?

Your entitled to your op. :)

I agree ghosting is not as real, but in this case I personally would prefer to sacrifice some realism for the sake of fun. But derby would be fun too lol, and could make for some epic replays - narrow misses, crazy collisions, etc. Maybe it could be a selectable option, but I doubt they'll program it that way.

Games are not real either, and they have features to cater to a good experience, and entertainment. Ghosting cars here will help minimize the problems that could occur. I honestly don't care if there is ghosting or not, because it will still provide a challenge when it comes to strategy in longer races. It may get annoying once in a while, though it will be funny to see AI cars smash into each other and take each other out at the same time. All in all, I'm looking forward to it no matter how it plays out!

I agree with the OP. I'm excited about comparing the real life car lap time to what can be done in the game to see how accurate they are in the game.

Agree 100%. After I saw the Top Gear episode where Clarkson ran Laguna Seca in an NSX in real life and GT4, and then read that we were getting the TGTT in GT5, I think this is going to be one of the funnest things in the game for me.

I just hope we aren't able to smash the real life times too easily. Proper tire choice will be crucial.

I also couldn't wait to boot up my PS2 and try to beat Jeremy's GT4 time - wasn't hard lol.

I disagree, GT likes too keep it real. Other options would be Ghost effect, as mentioned, penatlies and AI slowing down, to avoid accidents. All options wont happen in real life, apart from the last one.

The other point being for me is finding out if you are a good driver or not.

We don't know what challenge(s) are in store for us yet but if one of them consists of head-on racing against The Stig which I believe we've already seen in the E3 trailer then I'd be satisfied if I could just keep up with his pace.

How cool would it be to have the teenage car challenge they had on the TG course! Or the limo course layout! Smash through some buggies, ebrake turns to impress, and the fire truck hosing down the track, lol. Not likely, but would be fun, lol.

Its a novelty thing to race there i guess, it would be fun with Damage on, online, sort of "judging" the activity at the intersection in order to either A)slow down and give right of passage or B) gun it and run it hoping you dont catch a bumper to the tail light.

That sounds fun, instead of ghosting. It could be a sort of sprint enduro.

+1

it is a first in racing video games, incredible what polyphony guys are achieving with GT5...I am sure forza guys are really jealous of the personal connections kazunori has with guys like newy, sebastian loeb, vettel, top gear guys....
