Virtual Track Day Series

Complete

misc24417an.jpg

Dave_George's Renault 5 Turbo at Infineon

A series of track days for lightly modded sports-biased road cars at various permanent tracks around the world.

LOTUS SPECIAL TRACK DAY

This unusual format is essentially a special one-off round, so people can see how they really stack up against the people they have been racing for the past 5 weeks:

I have been talking to some contacts at Lotus and Suzuka, and have wangled us something a bit special.

It turns out that the Suzuka Race Driving School will shortly take delivery of a new fleet of Lotus Elises, and the Lotus marketing dept are making a big splash of it as part of their push into Japan.

We have been invited to take part in one of thier press launch days where we will be allowed plenty of laps in their specially specced up school cars on the FULL Suzuka Grand Prix Circuit.

This will take place just after our weekend at the Nurburgring, and give everyone the opportunity to see what they can do in like for like equipment.

They have some pretty good equipment on them, and quite a lot of scope for chassis tuning, so there should be a lot of fun for everyone. The specs are as follows:

Lotus Elise 111R

270bhp@7800rpm
186lb.ft@6800rpm
860kg

Stage 2 NA tune
Semi-racing exhaust
Engine balancing
Port Polish
Racing chip

Roll cage (only on some cars so optional)
Semi-racing suspension
Brake balance controller
Variable Limited Slip Diff

S1 (Sports/Hard) Tyres

Standard gearbox
Twin plate clutch
Racing Flywheel

Oil change and Chassis refresh as required.

I know that many of you have been itching to find out how you compare, so this should give you the opportunity. I will be doing some research in the Driver's Book of Excuses, as Suzuka is one of my worst tracks in the game :grumpy: Why did I choose it? Go figure...:dunce:

The idea is to reproduce the variety of a track day, and have a bit of fun. This being GTP there has to be a competitive element :) so we've got a system of classes that should produce some healthy competition. I want the class system to throw up a few odd-ball cars, as you get at a real track day, rather than have everyone turning up in a Motorsport Elise, or whatever. You can choose 3 cars from different divisions, so give it a go!

Eligibilty:

Any road car in keeping with the Track Day theme.
4 door cars will have to be a distinct sports model of higher output than standard in order to be eligible (eg Type R Accords, M5, E55 AMG etc). This rule excludes most kei cars, except such as the Beat, Cappuccino and AZ-1.
No Concept cars, prototypes, ’tuning cars’ (including Buick Special) or racing cars.
The Volvo 240GLT is banned as it is not in the spirit of the competition and it’s butt ugly.

Modifications:

Modifications will be strictly controlled according to the following rules:
The only tyre allowed will be the control tyre: S1.
All cars will start with a base setup as follows: sports suspension, sports exhaust, racing flywheel, chassis refresh (optional), oil change and roll cage (opt).
At each track, competitors will be allowed one further modification of their choice, which must only be one level higher than the previous spec.
The following mods are not allowed: stage 4 turbo, supercharger, no gearbox mods, no nitrous system S1 tyres only.
Budget Division cars will start with a stage 1 NA tune, unless they are turbocharged as stock, when they will start with a stage 1 turbocharger.
Cars that are NA as stock may run with an 'aftermarket' turbo, but only to stage 2 as further tuning IRL requires intercooler and other work.

Divisions, Sub-Divisions & Classes:

There will be four divisions:
1) Classics Division (up to 1979)
2) Budget Division (1980-1989)
3) Modern Division (1990 on)
4) Millionaire’s Division (C 100,000+)

You may enter up to 3 cars but each must be from a different division. This is to promote diversity.

Each division may be divided into sub-divisions and classes, depending on demand. For a sub-division or class to be activated, there must be at least 4 entries. Any remainder will be eligible for the division place points, but sub-division and class place points will only be awarded if the sub-division or class is activated.

Classes are based on stock power figures, otherwise cars would jump from class to class as they were modified.

Points:

Place points will be awarded for the first six places in each division, sub-division or class: 1st place, 6 pts, 2nd place, 5 pts, 3rd place, 4 pts, etc, but you can only win one set of these points for each car. So a class winner does not collect more than 6 place points, even if he is also the fastest in the division.

There will also be division points awarded for the two fastest cars overall in each division: 2 points for 1st, and 1 point for 2nd.

Similarly, there will be 2 “FTD” points awarded to the person who puts in the “FTD” – Fastest Time of Day.

Good work guys! Love the Lancer, Boogieman! And that Integra should show the way to any Focuses and GTAs that turn up...

hmm . . I think we need 2 modifications for every week . . otherwise we don't get very far till the end of this race . . .

I need a limited slip . . soooo bad . . :D

Boogieman, what was your first mod at Suzuka? I was trying to see. (You're allowed one at each track:tup:)

PS is anyone good with spreadsheets? I'm gonna need one with all those classes...:indiff:

oh! . . even the first one? I thought the base setup was for the first week . . . well . . that's gonna make my life easier . . thanks . . :D

hmm . . can I go for a fully adjustable one? . .or do I have to start with a 1-way?

Start with the one way. they're ok, though.

On the basis that you can't have a track day without a Caterham, I have brought my...

Quick question - we get a mod at the first track on top of the standard spec?

'cos my car realy needs it (but I'm gonna stick with it - just wait and see)

And at present I am unsurprisingly the slowest around the track, but I still look the best in a 'retro' cool style. Still pulling into the pit-lane and playing with the oily bits looking for the sweet set-up. Pah all this modern stuff, you kids don't know your born.

This is fun. 👍

scaff i think you have a "slight" body roll issue

well first impressions in the audi...........oh dear :(

audi doesnt like this track at all, feels to tight and twisty for this big barge  brakes and tyres only seemed to last around 5/6 laps before they started fading.

best so far is a 1:31.828
img01037hk.jpg

now for the odyssey:lol: took it out without making any ajustments to the sport suspension
have to admit this car handles really well and you can take a fair amount of the corners flat out although with some of the slower corners i had to use first cause there just wasnt any "get up and go" in 2nd,keep messing up the first few really slow corners :( so need to work on that.only did around 5/6 laps
best laptime so far is 1:43.155
brakes and tyres still felt strong

The four door thing has always been there, and the Honda Oddyssey has always been "not in the spirit of the competition", and we even mentioned it specifically in the "how about" thread, and I'm in charge, and it's ugly and it smells:) . Ed wins.

As far as the Ubersaloons go, I wanted to get the S4 and RS4 in with the RS6 and other ubersaloons, but their price is lower. But yes, if you want you can run it as a Millionaire's car. Seeing as it's you.:sly:

well i would say cars like the RS6,E55 and M5 (uber saloons)should be under millionaires as they are the next step up ;) were as the S4 is on M3 level and the RS4 is M3 CSL (more "sports"saloons)level so that would be could for the modern one ;) what do you think?

so im losing my poor Oddyssey? :(

If you can explain your bizarre attachment to your ridiculous box on wheels, you can keep it! :D

I'm gonna have to read that ubersaloons thing again...

scaff i think you have a "slight" body roll issue

LOL - 'stock' photo I had handy, but that aside the Galant does feel its age, particularly pulling out of tight corners and up slopes. The exit of the tight hairpin at the back section is a particular nightmare.

And that the fun of this little beast, its never going to be that competative, but hey i don't care. My first personal mission is to see if I can get it below 1.45, after that who knows.

It may be faster than my Galant (and less likely to break down) but at least I can drive mne without a paper bag on my head. LOL
